Sapphire syrup sloshed inside a tall metal pod that hummed in a low pitch. Caressed by the thick liquid, a fetus no more than twenty weeks curled up, held in place by myriads of wires. The Emperor of Mankind and Malcador the Sigilite examined the switches and the wires of the machine in the deep cellar below the great Imperial Palace. The Emperor examined the fetus with cold, dispassionate eyes, as if he saw a product and not a living being.[i/]

“We have no use for it.” The Emperor said.[i/]

Malcador softly hummed, his hood hid his half of his face, yet the Emperor knew the tells of his old friend.

“There are many use for it, a buffer perhaps.” He continued hearing The Emperor’s silence. “The primarchs will be brothers and brothers will naturally compete. They will seek your approval as all sons do. She will be an alternative to impress and to distract the primarchs of their competitiveness. If she is proven ineffective, she bcomes a political tool of convenience.”[i/]

“The primarchs are not children and will be above such emotions. It is inefficient to create this just so my sons can feel appreciated. The primarchs are weapons.” The Emperor said without a hint of emotion.[i/]

    Malcador nodded. “But still human.”[i/]

The Emperor paused for a brief moment, then stared at the pod. The fetus twitched its leg.[i/]

“Create her as you see fit.”[i/]

A young girl skipped in the halls of the Imperium Palace. Her skin was light brown with long black hair, with brown eyes full of wonder and vigor waiting to be expended. She ran between the legs of custodians and lucifer blacks, jumped past a cart stacked with parchments, all while giggling as a child should. The jaw of vising Bureaucrats and officers hung in disbelief for many reasons.

    “That must be…”

    “Yes, she is…”

For one, it could be the acrobatics of the child, or the fact that the custodians did not care. Most likely, the little girl was Her Royal Highness. Pangea, The Princess of Imperium of Man, the daughter of The Emperor of Mankind.

    >Who was greatly adored by her brothers (Default Primarch backstories, however, angron’s nails are not fully entrenched)
    >The sole daughter and child of The Emperor (The sons are being found, Horus is already found)

The princess was gifted, excelling in every endeavors. Her psychic abilities were unmatched, save for few that can be counted with one hand in the entire Imperium. The raw intellect made her a prodigy in any scholarly field, and her physical ability made many officers and warriors eager to see her growth.

“I never thought I’d see the highness herself…” A new bureaucrat said.

The old governor nodded. “That is her highness indeed. Do not let her childish whimsy fool you should you ever encounter her attention.”

    “Why is that?”

    Oh shit, it's Pangea again!
Ngl, it's been a while since I participated in the original quest, so I don't remember all the details, but one of her biggest character flaws is that she was jealous of her Primarch brothers, right?
Do we want to go with that again, or do we instead want to try something different this time around?

It could be pretty interesting to see how Big E would react if... idk, his daughter shows slight sympathy towards xenos, or if she maybe questions whether the Imperium should be fully annexing all humans they find rather than allow some places remain independent.

Her very existence is already a huge step towards preventing (or at least mitigating) the Horus Heresy, and that's even if we don't utilize our meta knowledge.
So if there still has to be a late game threat, it'd be ironic if Pangea was unintentionally one of the direct causes; quietly questioning The Emperor or wondering if The Imperium should be governed differently.
    >>
“She can be deceptively cunning, whether on purpose or not, no one could ever tell.”

The young bureaucrat raised an eyebrow. “She’s just a little girl.”

The older man shook his head. “She’s not just a little girl, she is the daughter of the Emperor. Watch your words, lest she decides you’re the next pawn in her regicide board.”

    OST Recommendation
    Assassin's Creed 2 - Home In Florence

You are Pangea, and you’re having fun!

Zipping through the halls, between the legs of custodians and tall (and stuffy) people alike, the palace was your playground and you were the only attendee… Yes, the only person. But! Just because you were alone didn’t mean you couldn’t involve others! Since you did plenty of times. A missing document there, a slip of parchment here, and soon, the mean governor would face an inquiry. That’s what he gets for focusing on his own greed.

Indeed, the work of a princess is never done.

Your home was a giant labyrinth, full of hallways, corridors, stairways, and all kinds of pathways. Of course, you knew all the shortcuts and hidden rooms. Your latest expedition was to make stashes across the palace and map them if you ever got in trouble and needed to hide. For no plan ever survived in the contact of the enemy. This time, you may or may not have shifted your schedule of study given to the custodians to track by your uncle for a full four hour of fun time.

Serves him right to make her study all the time!

The custodians truly need to up their security, the infiltration was too easy since their serfs were too trusting. All it took was to enter the Tower of Hegemon, and since no one question your presence, all it took was giving the “new” schedule to the serf to deliver! Easy as candied yamas.

    “Huhuhu…”

    You giggled at your brilliance.

The bag filled with soft feather molded under your weight as you held a data-slate containing old terran literatures, a bag of dehydrated tater chips, and a fizzy drink. Ah yes, this truly was a wonderful day.

    ////(((<O>)))\\\\

You jolted from your lounging. Uncle. His psychic eyes emerged throughout the palace. You make a psychic blanket, a swampy shadow to submerge yourself in. With a held breath you wait. There was nothing to be afraid of since your strategic haven was chosen based on how hidden they were first.

<<Pangea. Do not think I cannot see you.>>

Underneath the psychic anti-ward and being in the deeper part of your home, you replied back in the psychic field where uncle threw his message out.

    <<Are you sure?>>

There was another psychic rumble, one that was casted out like a wide net, and your anti-warding managed to give a small bump with your attempt at calling your uncle’s bluff. The psychic net surely sensed the small psychic signature. Curses, you shouldn’t have replied in the first place. You grimaced, and waited.

<<I am certain. Would you like to face punishment properly, or be dragged out?.>>

    You held your tongue.

No more calling out bluffs, you waited, unsure whether or not if Uncle was bluffing or not. Uncle sighed.

    <<You have made your choice.>>

Beams of light swaddled you up. From neck down, you couldn’t struggle even an inch. Worst of all, you were paraded like a captured General. He had you bound and floated through the main halls to his study. You were plopped down on his chair as he glared at you with his arms crossed.

“So, you thought I wouldn’t find you.” Uncle said. “Then you doubted my ability.”

“But you said to always verify any claims.”

“I have, but there is a difference between obeying your elders and what you have said, is there not?”

    “Yes… Uncle.”

He nodded. “Your punishment will be a study on the Sans Tax Reform and the summary of the Lions Gate supply chain regarding raw materials.”

    You lean your head back.

“A daughter of the Emperor does not bemoan studying.”

    >“I didn’t know I was one… As if Father will care.”

    "I didn't know I was one"
    Based sassy Pangea
Although believing he wouldn't care is silly, because if you're a useful tool, then he'll value you. It's how he sees the Primarchs, after all
    >>
“I didn’t know I was one…” You crossed your arms. “As if Father will care.”

“He is busy. He needs you to be ready when the time comes.” Uncle said.

“You always say that but all I do is read, read, and read!”

You slammed your fists on the wooden table as you got up from the chair. Your hair floated as golden light formed around you. This tended to happen when your emotions got the best of you, which recently has been frequent. Your nostrils flared but Uncle didn’t seemed bothered at all but tired, annoyed, knowing full well there were more important tasks at hand. You slumped back, defeated, there was no way out of this mess.

“Without knowledge, raw power cannot be honed.” Uncle said. “Your studies may seem useless but when you are given a responsibility, you will use the skills you have learned. You know where the library is, now go.”

    “Yes, uncle…”

The library, or formally known as the Principa Collegiate, a place where ambassadors and scholars of other worlds come to learn the ways of the Imperium. The Collegiate was also the place you spent most of your time studying. The Collegiate, like many halls and areas, had tall ceilings with a dense traffic of scholars, ambassadors, and serfs. Going to another floor required a long trek through the traffic of people or on a packed grav lift. You scoffed at the both options.

    “Vacate this grav-lift!”

The residents stared at you with confusion and bewilderment, except for the tutors who were aware of you.

“This is the princess, everyone vacate this grav-lift!”

The swarm scurried away, leaving you with spacious rooms. Once you reached the third floor, you sighed, and trudged to the corner where you studied, a quiet place away from the opportunistic eyes and ears of the other world’s scholars and politicians visiting the Principa Collegiate. In the corner of the far flung section, you pulled the book on the top shelf. The scent of old parchment and incense canceling the old smell clashed, pureeing into an oddly comforting smell.

“The inspector has his cut. He knows what to do.”

You placed your book down and follow the sound. Two robed men whispered in hushed, shadowy voices, safely snug between the thick shelves.

    “And the courier?”

    “Scheduled for tonight.”

A paid inspector and a courier, with no specific location to look for… Your studies could wait. You followed the two men. One of them was an ambassador and the other was a xeno-tech specialist Tailing them meant forgoing your studies, reporting them would lead to nothing.

    You attended the scholar’s class.

The lecture auditorium was wide, easily capable of filling in hundreds of students. The walls were dimmed gold with intricately patterned seats and tables. You cloaked yourself and waited until all the students entered and sat in their own respective groups. You stood at the corner and watched the scholar enter. The man was quite young, with firm dark skin and sharp eyes brimmed with passion. The golden chain rested on his shoulders and stretched to his abdomen, dangling with the symbol of his office.

“Today, we will continue our lecture on the danger of…”

The lecture was typical. Xeno tech is bad, buying one is bad and dealing with xeno in either diplomatic or trading is also bad.

    >You had to roll your eyes, this black and white approach on xenos was impractical
    >Relying on xenos would always lead to ruin, studying the tech was fine, but they needed to be disposed of after milking their uses

The scholar’s name was Ban Aknett, and despite his distaste he sure was willing to put his hand around xeno-tech. You followed him around further but the other ambassador he met was gone. At the very least, you remembered the ambassador’s face. This will have to do for now.

You returned to the halls, wondering how to tackle this traitor. Important as you are, mere words will not be enough. And Father would certainly done the same. You returned to your room after turning in the work at uncle’s study. You found out where the ambassador was from and you can lock down the port he was assigned to…

For now they will have the port under watch. Since you had no actual commanding power, you weren’t sure who to go to…

Well, then the only way is to go by herself then!

    But who to use?

If the Solar Auxilia were ever mentioned in a conversation, then the Lucifer Blacks eventually got involved. They were clad in black ceramite armor, their glowing red eyes behind the visor struck fear into their enemies that dared to stand against them. You were usually escorted by custodians, just the one, Ra Endymion, your “protector” but in reality, he was your warden in the prison known as the Imperial Palace.

“A tour of the Lion’s Gate Spaceport?” Ra said. “For what reason have you gained an interest, princess?”

“Uncle told me I should understand the Imperium on a broader scale.” And he did mention that countless times. “So, I’m starting at the heart.”

    “Then we’ll—”

“Well about that… I’m going to requisition a squad of Lucifer Blacks.”

Ra paused, you assumed he tried to rationalize why you wouldn’t bring him. You had to push a little further.

“I understand your reservations, but having someone as grand as you following me will disrupt the workers. Don’t you think?”

He nodded. “I will have a squad ready, name the time and date and you will have them.”

The process to getting to the specific port was a three months effort of learning the individual ports from their average container in transit to the dock workers. While not unpleasant, the process was dull. You had to create a predictable pattern of visit before you could do a surprise visit to Dock 501, assigned to the Gorgea II, an industrial and trade world between two prosperous trade routes.

Before visiting the dock, you had the Lucifer Blacks infiltrate to ascertain their shifts and goods expected. Finally, you arrived at Dock 501 at 1147. Without a warning, you had the gate guards open in silence. The few dock workers that remained in this shift barely noticed your arrival, not until someone had to do a double-take.

    “P—Princess Pangea!”

Every worker paused and immediately bowed, some did so slower for safety reasons but your arrival halted their entire operations.

“Please, no need to pause on my account.” You quickly said. “Is the dock master here?”

A skinny man quickly ran, holding a dataslate in one hand and bag in another. The Lucifer Blacks pointed their glaives at the dock master, who nearly fell at the sight. The dock master bowed on one knee, lips quivering.

“Y—Your eminence, we are most honored by your visit!”

His emotions tasted sour, not intimidation but fear, as if you caught him at the most inopportune time.

“I hope I am not intruding. I assume you are aware of what my endeavor is? I hear Gorgea II has been more prosperous and I wish to see their goods.”

The dock master nodded, eyes still glued to the ground. “Of course… Yes. You are most welcomed to inspect.”

The visit was same as the others, but you placed listening devices in the dark corners of the dock.

“And are you also the inspector of this dock?”

“There are ninety-eight inspectors on dock 501.”

    “Does your ambassador visit often?”

“He does, he was once the secretary to the minister of treasury so he likes to see the numbers and his own businesses he is doing, with the permission from my world’s governing body. Though I’m afraid I am not privy to the details.”

It was time to pull back, if you asked too many questions you’ll only make yourself known.

“It is refreshing to see such flexibility offered to a civil servant. Thank you for satiating my curiosity.”

With the monitoring device set, you’ve been glued to your dataslate for the last three days, surviving on nutrient paste while enduring uncle’s boring lessons. Uncle’s tower, known to the citizens as The Sigilite Sanctum. To you, this was prison. Uncle droned on, clearly to an audience that she could not see, how else would he not realize the absolute boredom you are showing?

    “Sit properly.”

Uncle’s psychic force positioned your body to sitting at attention. You shake your head at the sudden pull and frown.

“I bet Horus doesn’t have to do this.” You muttered.

“Because your brother has a different responsibility.”

    “It’s far better than mine.”

Uncle closed his book. “Waging war is not an enviable responsibility. War leaves you scarred, hurt, even when it is over the pain will remain. However, we cannot unify humanity without it. You are not made for war, you are far better than that.”

You could never sense Uncle’s thoughts, not even his emotions through his facial movements. But this time, there was a twinge of sadness, an old pool of emotion you could get a faint whiff of. Your shoulders tensed. You wanted to lead soldiers, to strike at humanity’s foes. You wanted to tell Uncle how desperate you are for it… But not now. Not when he’s like this.

“Then… What am I made for?”

“To lead once the ashes have settled.”

“And what about you, Uncle? You and Father fought, do your scars still hurt?”

“Scars are just that, Pangea. Scars.” Uncle said. “Today’s lesson will end early. Go see Horus, spend time with your brother. There are matters I must attend.”

    The Hall of Conquerors.

Father preserved a gigantic tract of land with twenty estates, a small castle fitting for your brothers, the primarchs, when they return to the Imperium. Yes… Primarchs, a general of their own legion, born from their gene-seed. Until the stars turned to dust and the galaxy’s last planet’s core collapse their names would echo in glory for an eternity. But you? No great destiny waited, even if uncle glorified your place, you were made to be a bureaucrat. What kind of legacy is that?

    And where’s Ra?

“Do you think others have introduced their sons yet?”

    “Who’d dare?”

“Anyone foolish enough would meet the primarch’s ire for certain…”

    Fools. As if you’re interested.

The gate of The Hall of Conquerors imposed an intimidating presence to any non-natives of the palace. Engravings of humanity’s history decorated the gold and black gate, and stood tall as five custodians combined. Such a gate required a tremendous force to open, and Ra could easily do so. Without Ra, you couldn’t open it yourself, and no other way to enter… That is, for the ordinary that is.

    “P—Princess?”

An hour later, the serfs of the Imperial Palace arrived in a linked cart with a box cart carrying various cleaning supplies. They wore short red coat and pants with subtle golden accents and black boots. They all quickly exited the cart and bowed. You eyed the box cart, yes, that should do.

“Serf, how full is the box cart?”

“Not that full… May I ask why?” The serf cocked his head.

“Which estate do you clean first?”

“Lord Horus Lupercal… But if I may ask why you are inqui—”

“I will go inside the box, and you will ride up to the estate as if nothing has changed.”

You climbed inside the box cart, then opened it back up.

    “Well, go on!”

It took some time to get to Horus’s estate but when the cart stopped you felt the serf carrying the box until it set down. You lifted the box’s cover up. The serf bowed once more as if scurried away.

    Infiltration successful.

You followed the sound of Horus and his men. Horus stood behind the panopticon in his war room, staring at the flat and cylindrical hololith projector with deep focus. You tasted a faint concern, but nothing so bitter or sour. Everyone had at least some kind of concern after all. Maybe a bit of surprise would do good.

I would have voted for the telekinesis option since it seems more playful and fun, but there's a slight chance that the stack of parchment paper is important or that he took effort organizing it correctly.

Surprising him from behind might lead to him instinctively attacking. He is a soldier after all, and that reflex can save your life in a battle. So if he or one of his bodyguards/soldiers hits Pangea when she does her surprise, it is very important for her to shrug it off and laugh. Hopefully nothing bad will actually happen, but it doesn't hurt to mentally prepare just in case.

If her surprise sneak attack is successful, make sure to hug, possibly even try to tickle him to make him laugh. Something I doubt Big E ever manages

Those neatly filed parchments looked like a good target. You flicked your finger, and the parchments fell. Horus and his sons turned around and picked up the parchments, but you made them slippery to give it the extra annoyance. Horus turned around and knelt to pick the parchments up as well. Horus’s brows creased as more parchment fell. While distracted, you snuck in and climbed on top of the panopticon.

    “Horus~!”

He turned, eyes widening as you launch yourself forward. Horus opened his arms and caught your descent. Thankfully he wore a hide chest piece and simple black leathered pteruges, covered up by robes and a wolf pelt. So, the impact thankfully did not hurt. You nuzzled your face as Horus held you tight.

“I assume the parchments were your doing?” Horus said.

    “Is it?”

    “Pangea…”

You rolled your eyes, then snapped your finger. The fallen parchments reformed back to the stack in the original order. Despite their lack of face showing, you tasted their utter annoyance and awkwardness. What boring lots.

“What brings you here, Pangea?” Horus said.

You didn’t want to burden him with the lesson you learned today.

“I was let off early, so I wanted to see my favorite brother.”

He chuckled. “I’m your only brother.”

Technically, he wasn’t. You let out a fake gasp with a side of a dramatic accent.

“Horus Lupercal, are you daring to suggest my affection for you is only due to you being my only brother?”

    “I dare not.” Horus said.

“I don’t know, I’m quite hurt and don’t feel a shred of sincerity.”

You jumped out of his arms. Horus knelt to meet you eye to eye.

“And what can this Primarch do to atone for his grave mistake?”

    “Hmm…”

“Carry me around your shoulders for the rest of the day!”

You gripped his fur cloak and climbed to his shoulder. The pelt on the pauldron’s hard surface made for an easier seat.

“As you wish, my lady.” Horus chuckled. “Maloghurst, what is left on the itinerary?”

“My lord, we have afternoon firing drills and an assembly regarding the crus—”

“I don’t recall such events.” Horus said firmly. “Are you certain, Maloghurst?”

He looked up to Horus, you tasted confusion with certainty in his mind, then an odd sense of understanding. You never could peer deeper into one’s mind, your psychic abilities were suited for physical activities than knowledge seeking or the more subtler arts. Maloghurst nodded.

“My apologies, my lord.” Maloghurst tapped and slid his finger on the data slate. “It appears I was mistaken.”

“It happens to all of us.”

“Bo—Ring!” You kicked your feet up and down. “I want to see the firing drills and a strategy meeting!”

“There will be more opportunity, Pangea.”

Instead of an exciting day the afternoon was a slog. Meetings after meetings, not with generals but with nauseating variance of administrators. Sustainable food, rations, rechargeable goods, supply routes, auxiliary forces… On and on, the sheer force of the boredom from this ordeal could be weaponzied.

“This is hardly what I was expecting.” Pangea said.

“A leader’s duty is not always filled with action and intrigue.” Horus said. “How about we go to my flagship? There’s plenty of excitement there.”

“My lord.” Another astartes arrived, his fist landed solidly on his chest with a loud clang. “The new aspirants have arrived.”

Horus nodded. “Thank you, see to their initiation.”

“Actully, can I see the new aspirants?”

Horus held his steady, yet light gaze at you. Despite his inscrutable visage, you tasted his curious tang. You didn’t know why you wanted to either, curiosity, yes. However, you did not know what inspired this curiosity. Just an… Urge? Something was tugging you to see them.

    “Then we shall.”

There were many training spaces in your home. There was the Tower of Hegemony’s training arena, a rather plain and simple place. The Lucifer Blacks had a field that could project holographics of various battle fields with movable tiles. The Imperial Army had one massive field, though the users had to bring their own equipments should they wanted a more specific training. Then there were training grounds for the astartes, a mix between the Lucifer Blacks and the Adeptus Custodes.

    “Are they all from Cthonia?”

“They are. The toughest and the bravest. Cthonia is a cruel place to live, but it breeds ingenuity and strength.” Horus said proudly.

    “Can I visit there?”

Horus paused. “I don’t think it’s the most… Appropriate place to visit yet.”

Ah yes, Cthonia. You didn’t need to read about it to know it was a place of gangers and polluted hive-sprawls. Their tattoos and scars already gave away their world’s standing. Not to mention their faces.

    “Hm.” You hummed. “I see…”

Still on Horus’s shoulder, you watched the new aspirants being walked into the arena from the second floor of the observation booth. These young men were hardy, wrapped with various tattoos with deep meanings from Cthonia. They had rugged looks, the kind that’ll be seen on Solar Auxilia or on battle hardened astartes, even the thunder warriors of old. Yet, their youth tempered those rough appearances into roguish vagabonds instead.

“Are they chosen or is this a trial?”

    “They are chosen.”

Their training was brutal, to the point that you wondered how they were not dead yet.

    “Ouch.”

One of the aspirants fell face first, a thick trail of blood flowed from his nose but he continued to train.

    >“They are…” You stared at their faces, and their biceps, then their forearms. “Quite the capable warriors. Aren’t they?”

“You know brother, how come you don’t have a Cthonian accent?”

You saw his flinch for a micro second.

“It’s because I’ve learned to suppress it. Unfortunately politicians find the accent accepting.”

You huffed. “Why should you care what does normals think about you? You’re a primarch.”

He maintained his unbothered attitude. “It is not that simple unfortunately.”

“It’s only complicated if you make it so.”

“Thank you, Pangea.” Horus said sincerely. “I’ll dwell on it.”

Back in your room, a stack of data-slates awaited you with a Lucifer Black as the courier.

“This is the recording of the dock.” The Lucifer Black said.

“Nn.” You nodded. “Place the stack on my table.”

The process took three days to work due to tutoring you had with Uncle. Even so, the recordings and the classifications of the xenos tech were completed into another data-slate that would damn the ambassador and Ban Aknett. You slumped on the quilted bag filled with the softest feathers with the data-slate in your hand. You could easily have those men turned in for cold trading or have them dance on your palm.

    “Hm…”

You studied further on Gorgea II and it seemed that the ruler’s brother is a rogue trader and has a son. You rested your head on your wrist as the gears turned around your head. If you are to assist Father in the future, wouldn’t it be great to have a rogue trader be in your debt?

    >No, you’ve done your job. It was time to end this.
    >You had an adept begin the process of contacting the rogue trader of Gorgea II

For the rest of the day you rested after you made the decision, then the weeks passed… Tutoring, etiquettes, the days slogged on without Horus’s company.

    “Uncle…”

    “No.”

“But I didn’t even say anything!”

You spread your arms on the wooden table, minding the inkwells and quills scattered on the table. The Sigilite Sanctum, the place of your study, and your prison, was dull as always. Unlike the rest of the palace, his home was a tower made of stone, filled with various old world relics and alchemical tools.

“What did you do before meeting Father?”

Uncle paused for a few seconds, likely contemplating on what answer would fit your “innocent” mind. You could never tell what Uncle was thinking, or even doing. Uncle’s work always remained so vague and wrapped in lies that only Father knew, not even Horus.

“I lived as a man would.”

You blinked hard, computing the words. “You were a woman?”

He shot a psychic bullet to your forehead, the impact left a sting.

“Ow!” You rubbed your forehead. “It was a genuine question! How am I supposed to understand your answers when they’re so vague?”

“That is for you to learn on your own.”

You bit back another retort and continued your studies. Despite the dilapidated appearance, there was always something calming about the tower. The earthy scent of mugworts always covered the toxic chemical scents from the alchemical tools. An old leather scent of tomes layered over as you read the various dialects and languages across the Imperium.

“Also, it seems that you have been moving pieces.” Uncle said.

    “Pieces?”

“The cold trading.” Uncle said matter-of-factly. “You have submitted the evidence to Hector Von Varvakin, the rogue trader.”

You froze under Uncle’s piercing gaze.

“You should be thankful that he is an honorable man, and without my intervention he would’ve assumed the message was for him to usurp the throne using the evidence which is something he is not keen to do. He does, however, thanks you for finding the corruption.”

    You swallowed hard.

    “T—Then… I’m not in trouble?”

    “We shall see.”

You were punished after. However, Hector Von Varvakin did send you a message of gratitude for finding the corrupt ambassador. It wasn’t a whole piece, but to have a rogue trader’s gratitude was worth the effort. For now, you set aside the data-slate and reading material in your room, with tutoring done early for the day, you were bored once more.

You went to the Tower of Hegemony. Despite auramite and gold being “rare” substance, they seemed almost everywhere. Not that you knew the specifics of your home but the palace can’t be all auramites can it?

“What business do you have here, princess?” Ra said.

“I wanted to see the custodes fight. There’s gotta be something here that makes Father so attentive to you all.”

You passed through the giant gate of auramite, engraved with the great battles and names of custodes who fought valiantly alongside Father. The halls of the tower set itself apart. No banners, carpets, not even a fat bureaucrat to take up empty space. The tower was a monastery in both form and atmosphere, not even a drop of pride could be seen.

“You must not hinder their duties.” Ra said.

    You rolled your eyes.

“I’m not so desperate that I will stop my Father’s trusted advisors for my own curiosity.” You withheld the bite in your voice. “I only wish to observe them.”

“Just like when you observed the Lion’s Gate Space Port?”

You bit your lips. “W—Well… Not like that. Is Father… Mad?”

He shook his head. “Neither mad nor approving. The Emperor was occupied to respond to a small incident.”

Your shoulders drooped. “Of course. Father is unmovable, as always.”

The war room was quiet, saved for the soft conversation spoken in hushed whispers. Silence echoed. The cogitator’s occasional whir and clicks interrupted, but rarely. You watched with Ra at the corner. Unlike the Imperial Army and the legions, the Adeptus Custodes worked on a small squad of three or four, but even then they worked individually to achieve a goal. You supposed their ability allows such flexibility, for no humans, augmented or otherwise could ever hoped to be as powerful as them.

“Hm…” You rubbed your chin. “How come Lucifer Blacks or the Solar Auxilia don’t do so?”

“I am not privy to their methods.” Ra said.

“I see, well, I suppose I’ll use that thought later then.”

A month passed, the palace began to pick up with activity due to the anniversary of the end of the Unification War, meaning you were casted aside as usual, until you got a message from the Rogue Trader, asking for an invitation to the palace with a promise of a gift and a favor owed. You could, but why was he asking for it? Do you really need some rogue trader’s favor? A ruler perhaps, but you wondered if this was worth the trouble.

A rogue trader had special privileges, having one under you would come in handy later. The question is… How do you procure an invitation when the person who decides on who are invited is none other than your own uncle? During tutoring, you placed higher walls as you wondered how you can have Uncle give a ticket without knowing.

    “You are scheming.” Uncle said.

    “N—No?”

His gaze narrowed. “Pangea, you have created a buried within your own thoughts higher than usual.”

You slowly swallowed, but did not lower your guard.

“Well… Why are you probing, uncle?”

“Because you did so loudly. I do not know what you are thinking, but I suggest you learn how to protect your thoughts subtly, or find a method that isn’t mine so I can detect it so easily.”

Your shoulders’ tension loosened, at least he didn’t know what you were thinking…

    Or did he?

This was your uncle, a psychic on par with Father. He survived the Old Night, fought beside Father during the Unification War. For now, you kept your words to yourself until you were well and truly alone.

    “What to do…”

In the evening, you laid on your bed, wrapped around in a swaddle of blankets only with your face sticking out. Unlike your brother’s estates with three floors, you only had two with minimum amenities such as a closet, bathroom, leisure room, and a small study you barely used. What was the point of having a study if you were going to be dragged into the tower anyway? You turned.

    Should you be honest?

If you did, will he understand or will he chastise you?

Will Father be notified or will he even lift a finger to wag at you?

You curled your knee into your chest, eyes closing tight.

    What… What did you want?

For the first time, you realized you had no answer to that. All this studying, this vague ambition to fight and envying your brothers, yet you had no answer of your own. By morning, you still hadn’t found an answer yet. You emerged from your blanket cocoon, and wore a plain white robe. Moonlight flooded through the windows and laid its glittering light on your white robe. You passed through the twists and turns of the maze like halls in the palace, and escaped to the upper balcony. You rested your arms on the railing, staring down at the glittering lights of Terra’s many habs.

“Sleepless night? You rarely seem so contemplative.”

You turned. Draped in shadows, you saw a familiar figure emerging.
