and the WWE title was on the line.
All Vince's stupid ass had to do was have Shamrock win the belt off Bret, then have Shamrock drop it to Shawn later before the year's end.
    That's it.
    Problem motherfucking solved.
For fuck's sake, Bret literally even tapped out to Shamrock in this match (but the ref didn't see it)
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gK5SQoEMhgw
Shamrock confirmed in a shoot that Bret directly told him before the screwjob that he wanted to drop the strap to him
And get this: DX was having interactions with Shamrock and even attacked him just days before the screwjob. A month after the screwjob, Shamrock ended up having a match with Shawn with the title on the line ANYWAY. Shamrock WON that match....but via DQ due to interference. So there was already grounds for Shamrock and Shawn to feud and have a title match where Shamrock could lose the belt to Shawn
    >b-but Shamrock wasn't a draw and didn't deserve the belt
Shamrock was clearly physically bigger than both Bret and Shawn, and was a very successful legit MMA fighter by that point. Plus he was over with the crowd and was getting big pops around that time due to his 'snapped' gimmick
There would have been zero shame in having him in the WWE title lineage as a very necessary transitional champion

Screwjob was a work you retard

It was a work between Bret and Shawn, Vince wasn't in on it.

You're missing the context, wrestling isn't just an event here or there. The broader context is the WWF wanted to have Shawn as the top heel, and the maximum amount of heat would've been beating Bret in Canada. Bret is a mark and didn't want to do what was best for business despite claiming to care about it
    >>
    >>21429653
Bret wasn't gonna do the job for shawn coz' shawn had told bret he wouldn't job for him. Tit-for-tat

Bret had creaticr control during the final part of his contract. The screwjob didnt need to go down at all. Bret wasn't gonna show up in wcw with the wwf world title. Hes not ric flair he has more integrity about him. Bret could have dropped the title to taker, surrendered the title on raw or dropped it to shamrock as op mentioned.

It was a ridiculous underhanded way for someone to go out who'd been so loyal.

    Creative^

    >>21429629
how close was the match to Bret's hometown?

    >The broader context is the WWF wanted to have Shawn as the top heel, and the maximum amount of heat would've been beating Bret in Canada.
Dude he grabbed a Canada flag, wiped his nose with it and humped it during his Survivor Series entrance
Bret Hart's presence was not needed at all for Shawn to get maximum heat there. Just like it wasn't needed in 2005

Screwjob had to happen regardless, it made the Mr McMahon character
    >>
    >>21429629
Shamrock was viewed as unreliable because he was a party guy.

Good thing Mr Gay Magazine was living a clean lifestyle in the big 97
    >>
    >>21429638
I've never heard that take before. Honestly, though Vince called for the bell how was he not in on it?
    >>
    >>21429653
    >Bret is a mark and didn't want to do what was best for business
He had creative control in his contract. If Vince signed a wrestler to a contract that said WWF had creative control over his the character, the wrestler would have to abide by what he signed, right?
    >>
    >>21429638
Wrong lol it was a work between shawn and vince, bret wasn't in on it and neither was shawn.
Cross the boss, the message will be delivered.

    ...lolwut

    >>21430628
So if McMahon broke the contract did Bret sue him for millions? Clear case of breach of contract
    >>
    >>21430538
He was Vinces butt boy, he had a pass to be stupid outside of work
    >>
    >>21429629
Shamrock mogged both Bret and HBGay at the end of that match and the crowd popped hard for him when he did his snap schtick. Would have been the perfect time to give him the belt
    >>
    >>21429629
I'm pretty sure Bret even wanted to drop it to Shamrock. And I think he may have at some point even suggested that the survivor series match is a triple threat with Shamrock in it and Shamrock would win. And then Shamrock would either drop the belt to Shawn on Raw or at the In Your House DX PPV.

    Literal retard

Both of your gay examples are exactly based on it being Bret in Canada
    >>
    >>21429629
why were they pushing shamrock so hard?
    >>
    >>21430769
vince was in on it but he wasn't also.
They worked themselves into a shoot
    >>
    >>21429638
This is a brilliant take and explains everything.
    >>
    >>21431884
    >why were they pushing a muscular legit MMA fighter who could actually show in-ring intensity and do passable promo work
Austin and Rock hadn't ascended yet, and neither Bret or Shawn were real draws
Vince was still throwing shit on the wall and seeing what stuck before Austin and Rock became top guys
There's a reason why he put the strap on Sid twice around this time (but unlike Shamrock, Sid wasn't a newbie in wrestling and had been around the business for a while)
