If you don’t have that right away then save up for it or ask a family member for a temporary loan (don’t use a bank!). Once you hit 10k put 5% of your monthly income into a high yield savings account. Every year increase that by a %. If you get over 15k in your emergency fund then transfer some of the stuff over 10k to that high yield savings

>>21409289I have my emergency fund, but instead of high yield savings, I put my extra money into the SCHD index fund. It focuses on companies that pay out consistent and growing dividends. Historically the annual growth of dividends from the fund has outpaced inflation. It will of course go down if the economy goes bad but not as low as the funds full of tech stocks. It's got old faithful companies like Home Depot and Coca-Cola. And I use each dividend payment to buy more shares.

I like it because it's historically performed very well, with exceptional dividend growth, and it's more stable than a fund that tracks the S&P 500, although you are missing out on some of the huge growth that's possible with a fund driven by tech right now. But, historically speaking, value stocks beat growth stocks in the long term, with the last decade and a half or so being an exception to that rule. It's also good for my peace of mind to be investing in strong companies that I know will be fine even if things get bad for a while.
