I did a thorough chronological rewatch of AJPW from the mid-80s to the end of 2023. I was already familiar with the King's Road era prior to this and I started watching current AJPW when Nakajima jumped over in 2023, so I wanted to cover the vast space in between. Lots of good stuff. My takeaways: the Mutoh-era was pretty fun for the most part, Taiyo Kea was cool, the cruiserweights like Kondo and Tanaka and Hayashi were awesome and underrated. I liked the Akiyama era a lot too and I loved the BJW crossovers they did in the 2010s.

the announcement at today's AJPW show:>[AJPW] Comedian Hanawa's Eldest Son, Hanawa Genki, to Make New Year's Eve Debut Against Suzuki Hideki: "I'm Really Excited">All Japan Pro Wrestling announced on October 22 that Hanawa Genki (25), the eldest son of comedian Hanawa, will make his professional wrestling debut at the promotion's New Year's Eve show at Yoyogi National Gymnasium No. 2 in Tokyo.>Hanawa is a 25-year-old native of Saga Prefecture. He devoted himself to judo from childhood and went on to attend the prestigious Kokushikan University. After graduating, he worked as a teacher, but left his position last year and signed a trainee contract with All Japan Pro Wrestling in March of this year.>After the third match at that day's Korakuen Hall show, Hanawa entered the ring with a nervous expression and addressed the crowd: "It's been decided that I'll be making my debut. I'll give it everything I've got. Thank you for your support." His announcement was met with loud applause. The arena's big screen then revealed that he would face Suzuki Hideki in a singles match on New Year's Eve. "I'll give it my all. Please cheer me on!" he declared before bowing to all four sides of the ring. The crowd responded with thunderous chants of "Hanawa!"
>>21387174>Later, in the backstage interview area, Hanawa expressed his determination: "First and foremost, I'm happy. But I also feel that I need to work many times harder from here until my debut. There are about two months until the match, and I want to put in the maximum possible effort during that time to become stronger." Regarding his opponent, Suzuki, he said emphatically, "I've been watching his matches for a long time, and he's a senior wrestler I deeply respect. I intend to give it everything I've got and take him on with the attitude of someone learning from a much more experienced wrestler.">Although he has yet to tell his family, Hanawa plans to invite them to his debut match. Clenching his fist, he declared, "I'm really excited, and I feel like I'm ready to go out there and do this. I'll fire myself up and give it everything I've got."https://www.tokyo-sports.co.jp/articles/-/407441

>[NOAH] Marufuji Naomichi Eager to Face Luis Mante, aka M.P.I.: "I Want to Put on Some Cool Wrestling">A contract signing ceremony for NOAH's October 25 show at Ryogoku Kokugikan in Tokyo was held in the city on October 24, where GHC National Champion Marufuji Naomichi (47) vowed to deliver an exciting battle against challenger Luis Mante.>Mante first appeared at the September 23 Korakuen Hall show wearing a black mask, attacking GHC National Champion Marufuji Naomichi while he was facing Los Tranquilos de Japon (LTJ). He subsequently competed at the October 4 Yoyogi show as the masked wrestler "M.P.I.," securing a direct victory over Marufuji in a tag team match to earn a championship opportunity. Then, during a preview match on October 15, he removed his mask and revealed his identity.>Looking ahead to their showdown, Marufuji expressed his enthusiasm: "Since he's taken off his mask and come forward openly to face me, I want to respond to that sincerity." He continued, "I want to put on some 'cool wrestling.' Lately, there's been a lot of outside interference and rule-breaking. I think I can have the kind of cool wrestling match I'm looking for with him." Mante responded, "Marufuji-san, you're a wrestler I deeply respect and admire. Tomorrow, let's put on a match worthy of being called a Match of the Year contender. And let's settle which of us is stronger."https://www.tokyo-sports.co.jp/articles/-/407607

>>21384911>>21394025Nature of the board. And of this thread in particular because people are watching different stuff and with different levels of keeping up with it. I stopped to read that when it was posted but I'm too historically ignint to really say anything interesting.>I did a thorough chronological rewatch of AJPW from the mid-80s to the end of 2023I have been kicking around doing something similar though. But just the big shows and then having Grok or one of them go back and create a narrative style write-up of what was happening in between them as it unfolded. To get a feel for what it was like if you were watching live back in the day and following through coverage in Tokyo Sports or whatever. Can't imagine I'll ever get around to doing it though, I have a hard enough time keeping up with what's on now.

Haven’t watched the show but seems like Naito is getting roasted online
Mr Smack Daddy outdrew Naito and Temu Naito back in May. If that isn't a sign to strap the rocket on him then NOAH should just close for business.
>>21402420as much as i love that little freak i wouldn’t be running to buy a ticket either. ueno had a great championship run and mao’s run has been pretty ass so far by comparison besides the fuminori match and even that could’ve gone bettermost of his defenses so far just feel like stat padding, hopefully this match with chris will be a turning point if he retains but i doubt it
>>21402483>Naito, man... Aren't his stamina, knees, and eyes all starting to go? His execution on moves in the latter half is just awful... Like Muto said, he really needs to change up his fight style.>The fact that he managed to claw things back on the mic shows Naito still has plenty of commercial value after all. That said, he really needs to change up his moves. They're too dangerous.>Even when Naito can't move properly anymore, he still wants to dish out and take dangerous moves, huh? That's tough on his opponents.>I wonder if OZAWA is going to stick with that persona forever. Honestly, it's starting to fall flat.>If he lacked popularity or drawing power in the industry, or if his matches remained unwatchable, he'd probably fade out from the main event scene. But Naito isn't at that point yet, at least for now. As long as Naito fans keep demanding it, he'll likely keep standing at the center of the ring.>It's not Naito's fault; the promotion is to blame for building an event around a Naito like this. He hasn't been able to put on anything but terrible matches for years due to his poor physical condition. Did they really think holding things together to carry him through the Shane match meant everything was fine?>If you read his interviews, it's clear that Naito has zero intention of changing his style. The organization using him is to blame, and Naito doesn't really have much of a pro wrestling IQ either.>During his 20th-anniversary live stream, Naito practically said he doesn't intend to keep going for that much longer, and in other interviews, he's mentioned that he won't change his style and will just retire once he can no longer wrestle this way—so things are going to stay as they are. Leaving aside whether or not he's already reached that point, as everyone has their own opinion on that...

>【NOAH】GHC Champion Naito Tetsuya Fires Back at Kenoh for Labeling Him "Dangerous": "Will He Stop Using High Kicks, Then?">GHC Heavyweight Champion Naito Tetsuya (44), who will make his second title defense against Kenoh (41) at NOAH's November 9 Korakuen Hall show, has fired back at his challenger's characterization of him as a "dangerous individual." Naito defeated N-1 winner OZAWA in a showdown between two of NOAH's top stars at the October 25 Ryogoku show, but Kenoh criticized the match, saying, "If he keeps doing things like that, injured wrestlers will be piling up, and NOAH won't have any wrestlers left." So what does the Uncontrollable Man have to say in his defense?>Naito accepted Kenoh's challenge in the ring immediately after successfully making his first title defense, and the match was officially confirmed the following day. A contract signing ceremony was promptly held, where Naito expressed confidence ahead of their first encounter since the January 2023 Yokohama Arena show. "He's someone I've already beaten once. I don't really have that much to say about him.">During the Ryogoku show, Naito drove OZAWA into the mat with moves including an avalanche reverse Frankensteiner and a high-angle Valentia, prompting Kenoh to question their safety. Asked about the criticism, Naito explained, "I used each of those moves because I absolutely couldn't afford to lose and desperately wanted to win. I believed he was an opponent I couldn't beat without going that far."
>>21409066>Speaking to reporters after the press conference, Naito further challenged Kenoh's criticism. "Professional wrestling itself is dangerous to begin with. If you want to avoid that danger, you shouldn't be doing it. Everyone who steps into the ring should be doing so fully aware of the risks and prepared to accept them. So all I can think is, 'What on earth is he talking about?'" Naito also questioned their differing perspectives, saying, "Of course, fans are free to debate these things however they like, but I have to wonder about a wrestler publicly making those kinds of accusations. If I told Kenoh that kicking someone in the head is extremely dangerous and asked him to stop throwing high kicks, would he actually stop using them?">Some fans have also voiced criticism on social media and elsewhere because certain moves during the match were not executed as intended. However, Naito defended his position, saying, "This is a match, and moves rarely go exactly as planned 100% of the time. Those kinds of risks are unavoidable whenever you wrestle. I've been carrying those risks for more than 20 years, so my reaction is basically, 'Why are you bringing this up now?'">Needless to say, Naito is not deliberately executing moves with the intention of injuring his opponents. He explained his unwavering position: "I do think we need to listen to the opinions of people who raise concerns about safety, but if we become too preoccupied with those concerns, professional wrestling will stop functioning properly as a sport. After all, we wrestlers are constantly training for precisely these situations. We train relentlessly, and we step into the ring having prepared ourselves physically and mentally, fully aware of the risks. I wish people would place a little more trust in us as professional wrestlers."https://www.tokyo-sports.co.jp/articles/-/407862
