IBM has put 100 billion transistors on a die the size of modern day CPUs

This means modern CPUs can be tripled in power with this tech. IBM makes only test CPUs and we dont know if actual Intel or AMD chip will work properly when created with this new transistor tech. But IBMs own prototype works, its just not good enough for use, meaning it doesnt beat the 30 billion transistor AMDs and Intels so there is no point in it.

Time will tell if IBMs research will be put to use.
IBM stopped making commercial CPUs 25 years ago and became a technology inventor company instead of consumer electronics salesmen.

Most transistor technologies since then has come out of IBM.

If silicon were replaced with Arsene Gallia they would become even better but that is impossible to do because of how much it costs.

It would be 5000 euros per wafer instead of 5 euros. The end product, the CPU costs usually 300 euro when made from 5 euro silicon wafer. Nobody can buy a CPU with cost of 100 000 euros, not for any kind of use.

Capitalism is dead on the west so don;t be surprised that they sit on it due to stockholders

cooling technology has not kept up with power 3x

this is true

I wonder why cant they make CPUs a bit bigger than they currently are.. more area, chance to put in more cooler metal as well
>>
>>545272082
They could but then you'd have a lot more issues with silicon consistency and chips would cost a lot more.

>China not stealing every single tech and actually coming up with their own

That'd be a first. Rooting for them.

I don't understand how cpus work. Why does it need so many transistors? Isn't that just adding more cores? can't they make the transistors they have go faster instead of adding more of them?
>>
>>545271850
I would bet it has, but it still doesn’t have the cost margins to be profitable.

based IBM, from prison camp tattoos to advanced microchips , always innovating

The more transistors you have, the more computing you can do simultaneously which most of the time means faster computation.
