Canada has benefited greatly from having access to the much larger US market right next door while also engaging in a degree of protectionism that the US mostly ignored. That looks to be in danger of ending and the leafs are scrambling for some way to either retain the advantage they've enjoyed for the past century or find a new situation with another country/group of countries. From a political point of view, it makes sense for Canadian politicians to pretend this is doable as it is red meat for the public and draws attention away from the invasion happening with the government's blessings. Reality is that it would be disastrous for the Canadian economy, far more so than giving up their protected markets to the US. Their best hope is for a change in leadership in Washington and that whoever comes in next will return things to how they've been. That wouldn't really help as Democrats are happy to let the Republicans be the bad guy and then silently solidify the gains the Republicans made while speaking nicely to whatever country got beat up.
