California-based AI startup Radical Numerics said a patient with a serious bacterial infection received an experimental treatment containing viruses created by its AI model, Omnii-1.

Rather than searching for a virus that could kill the patient's bacteria, Omnii-1 redesigned part of a virus so it could better recognize and attack the specific bacterial strain causing the infection. The company says the AI-driven process could eventually take just days. However, it has not released details about the patient's diagnosis, the treatment's outcome, or whether the infection was ultimately cleared.

Radical Numerics said this was the first time AI-designed phages had been used to treat a human patient. The announcement was published on the company's website but has not been confirmed in a peer-reviewed study, and the company has not said whether the treatment helped the patient.

The development comes amid growing interest in using AI to accelerate medical research, alongside concerns about how the technology could be misused.

In August, researchers at Stanford University and the Arc Institute announced that they had used AI to design previously unseen viruses capable of killing E. coli bacteria in laboratory experiments. Of nearly 300 AI-designed viral genomes synthesized and tested, 16 produced functional viruses. Those experiments were conducted in bacteria, not humans.

Researchers have warned that AI systems capable of designing new viruses raise biosafety concerns, particularly if similar methods are adapted to create viruses that infect humans.

Journos think nothing is real until it's "peer reviewed". If they knew how useless peer review is they wouldn't write that shit
