What happened? France's National Assembly on 30 October adopted, by 11 votes to 10, a Socialist amendment to the 2027 budget bill that would tax "producers of digital data" 0.055 euros (5.5 cents) for every gigabyte they send to French internet users. Amendment I-1358, tabled by deputy Laurent Lhardit, was passed against the advice of the government and the budget's rapporteur général.How it would work: Internet service providers would measure, each quarter, the volume of data each content provider and content delivery network sends to their customers, under the supervision of telecoms regulator Arcep and the tax administration.
