The guy who put together the very first 'New Testament', in about 140AD, said exactly this same thing. His name was Marcion ("Little Mark"), and he was from a city on the Black Sea in northern Turkey (Sinope). He felt that the old testament god was actually evil (he called him a "demiurge"), and that Jesus had nothing to do with him. This first "New Testament" had a single gospel, possibly an early version of Luke, and ten letters of Paul.

He took his case to Rome and was excommunicated, but he was very rich and the churches he founded lasted for several hundred years. His writings and New Testament version were suppressed by the Roman church, but has been substantially reconstructed from extensive quotes from later Christians railing against it.

in bulgaria, the gnostics were known as bogomils
they were expelled, because they mocked the god of the physical world, by having gay sex
in france they were known as the cathars, and were crusaded against
in england, they were the origin of the term buggery / sodomy, in reference to their bulgarian roots

The primary and most direct Bible verse about the law leading to Christ is Galatians 3:24:
• Galatians 3:24 (ESV): "So then, the law was our guardian until Christ came, in order that we might be justified by faith."
(Other translations like the King James Version use the word "schoolmaster", while others use "tutor" or "guardian").

Supporting Verses on the Law and Christ

• Galatians 3:23–25: "Before faith came, we were kept in custody under the law, being shut up to the faith which was later to be revealed. Therefore the Law has become our tutor to lead us to Christ, that we may be justified by faith. But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a tutor."
• Romans 10:4: "For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes."
• Romans 3:19–20: "Now we know that whatever the law says it speaks to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be stopped, and the whole world may be held accountable to God. For by works of the law no human being will be justified in his sight, since through the law comes knowledge of sin."
• Romans 8:1–3: "There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death. For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do."

What the Passage Means

The Apostle Paul explains that the Old Testament Law (the Mosaic Law) was never meant to save people through their own good works. Instead, it acts like a strict guardian or tutor: it shows people their moral failures, reveals their need for a Savior, and points them straight to Jesus Christ, where forgiveness and righteousness come through grace and faith.

Primary Bible verse stating that the law leads to death:
• Romans 7:10 (ESV): "The very commandment that promised life proved to be death to me."

Key Verses on the Law and Death

The Apostle Paul writes extensively about how the law, while holy and good in itself, exposes human weakness and results in spiritual condemnation and death.
• 2 Corinthians 3:6: "...who has made us sufficient to be ministers of a new covenant, not of the letter but of the Spirit. For the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life."
• Romans 7:5: "For while we were living in the flesh, our sinful passions, aroused by the law, were at work in our members to bear fruit for death."
• Romans 7:9–11: "I was once alive apart from the law, but when the commandment came, sin came alive and I died. The very commandment that promised life proved to be death to me. For sin, seizing an opportunity through the commandment, deceived me and through it killed me."
• Romans 6:23: "For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord." (The law defines sin, and the consequence of that sin is death).
• Romans 8:2: "For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death."
• 1 Corinthians 15:56: "The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law."

Why Does the Law Lead to Death?

According to these passages, the law itself is not evil. Rather, it acts like a mirror that shows a person their flaws. Because human beings cannot perfectly keep God's perfect standard, the law acts as a legal prosecutor—it reveals our rebellion (sin) and pronounces the penalty for that rebellion, which is spiritual separation from God (death). This ultimate realization of helplessness is what is meant to drive a person to seek the grace found in Christ.
Would you like to examine how Paul contrasts "the letter" and "the Spirit" in 2 Corinthians, or see how Romans 8 explains the way believers are delivered from this cycle?
