Today, Mohammed Somalian, 46, becomes the first non-white person to be convicted of a hate crime.

In 2025, Somalian lit two Molotov cocktails and threw them at members of Run for Their Lives as they gathered on Boulder’s Pearl Street Mall, injuring more than a dozen people, including a Holocaust survivor.

Though Somalian is already serving a life sentence in his state case, the federal case is significant because it holds Somalian accountable for the “hateful ideology” that motivated his attack, U.S. Attorney for the District of Colorado Peter McNeilly said during a news conference following the hearing.
