This is a thread for enjoying a pipe while doing outdoor activities. If you ask why this belongs on /out/, you've never spent
an evening by the campfire with a pipe silently enjoying the nature around you, and you're missing out.

    >how to get started
Purchase a corn cob pipe (or a cheap briar pipe) and a pouch of Half and Half or Captain Black tobacco from a smoke shop
or online. You will need a lighter or match, and something to tamp it with--a large nail works well if you don't have a pipe tool.
Fill the pipe with tobacco, pack it down halfway, top it off, pack it down to 3/4, top it off again, pack gently and enjoy. Smoke
slower than you think you need to, the tobacco tastes best when it is burning cool. Tamp and re-light as needed. If you still
have trouble, try different methods on YouTube until you find one that works for you.
    >smoking a pipe will give you cancer
Originally the Surgeon General found that pipe and cigar smokers, following a careful study of the statistics (at a time when
most adults smoked, so they had a good sample size), had insignificant death rate increases. Nowadays, tobacco is being
legislated against while hard drugs are being legalized. Put two and two together. Tobacco is just another good thing under attack by the government.

    >muh weed
Not the time or place. Start your own thread.

    All tobacco users welcome.

    >Expensive pipes are retatded. The experience is about the tobacco. “Muh cooling”. lol. Corncobs are the coolest smoke. You just want to buy expensive trinkets
    >Long pipes are likewise retarded. I see some of you walking around the woods trying to look like fuckin’ bilbo using a pipe with more design than purpose. Don’t pretend keeping that dumb shit clean is worth the time.

    are you me?
i buy cheap old new stock pre 70s pipes with condensers, tho i switched from early morning to standard mixture, the cold smell after smoking isn't as strong
    >>
    >>2882177
I just use cheap ass MM corn cob or hardwood depending on the season. Corncob in winter up here doesn’t heat up to warm the hand as well during outside snow sessions. When I tear them up or forget them outside or decide cleaning would be stupid then I just order new ones. Frankly, I should get in to making them myself because I really only want one shape repeatedly and don’t care if it looks wonky.
I get exactly what you mean about the cold smell. It’s one of the reasons i consider my pipes “ruined” so often. I’ve got a couple nicer ones set back to the side for special blends. I found Standard Mixture to be very surprisingly sweet (too sweet for me) and it doesn’t have that same head feeling I like. I like Presbyterian mix too because it’s so perfumey and dry but it too lacks that specific mental acuteness.
    >>
    >>2882186
    >>2882177
Cold smell? Wtf. I've been smoking for years and don't have any issues with how my pipes smell when they're not in use. Do you guys just never clean your pipes? They are meant to be cleaned, you know. Some pipe cleaners, a little bit of strong ethanol, and the occasional paper towel or reaming does wonders.

This and haunted bookshop my go to
got a few others when I went to Japan and a nice wooden pipe made there but the corncob is still probably my fav
    >>
Anybody got any resources on simple pipe making? I’d imagine the bowl itself is fairly straightforward, just a drill press. I’m worried about shanking it and getting the shank such that it could fit a standard bit. I do have access to proper equipment but I want to do it right if I’m going to start.
    >>
    >>2882193
At a certain point any blend with noticeable Latakia is going to get deep into the wood/cob/whatever. Cleaning a wooden pipe with alcohol sounds irritating. I’ll smoke them to the point where I don’t like them anymore and then get another for $20. Since I smoke heavily I’ve got 8 of the same pipe in rotation for dryness. They don’t go out very often.
    >>
    >>2882193
i do clean my pipes after every use, also you're not supposed to do the deep alcohol cleaning with cotton balls and all every so often, briar absorb it and that can damage it over time if you do it too often
but as the other anon said, some blends do leave a smell, like the smoke can leave a smell on clothes and everything
    >>2882261
now maybe that's a bit excessive, if i was you i'd just do corncobs myself
    >>
    >>2882261
    >I've got 8 $20 pipes
all this to avoid doing a little cleaning on your pipes? why do you not want nice things?
    >>
    >>2882240
literally all you need is 2 drill bits (one if you wanna ironman it)
other than that, go for both mm & imperial drill bits, and build around the stem you have in your hand rather than the stem you're gonna get
after than, having a dremmel with a meat eater helps to shape the bowl into what you need before you sand & knife it
    >>
    >>2882261
why spend an extra $20, when a wet pipe cleaner will fix months of not cleaning?
i understand laziness, but its more effort to buy than to have a couple things in a drawer

I guess i’ve just picked up the habit because so many people talk about it, but when I tamp my tobaccy down I usually do it in a roundabout motion around the rim while leading the middle puffed up and lit. It keeps the ember in the middle, and anecdotally I’ve noticed that it somehow seems to deposit a thicker, more cohesive cake way more quickly

Can any of you guys buy good pipe tobacco at a store near you? If I want EMP for example I’d have to drive all the shit way across town for 40 minutes. The guy who owns that shop is nice enough after getting to know him but the EMP tin is $27. I can get that same tin online for $10 less consistently and sometimes even less than that. I don’t mind supporting local pipe shops at all and I like the dude but goddamn I cannot afford to be doing that. Feels like ass constantly waiting on online orders.
It’s not like this for everyone, right?
    >>
    >>2883003
    it can be worse actually
first of you can't buy or sell tobacco online in france, only in licensed shops, and since the last price hike a tin is 40 euros
if you can get it in your mailbox just do that
    >>
    >>2883005
Holy hell, that’s awful. Where I am in the midwest, pipe and cigars are basically treated as uncontrolled. My pipe tins don’t even have the surgeon general warning about health, it’s all just advertising. I guess it’s sort of assumed that the rebellious youth aren’t interested in fine tobacco and would rather fuck around with cigarettes/zyn/dip.
What would the purpose of restricting pipe tobacco by mail even be? Surely there aren’t underage kids trying to get a nice virginia.
    >>
    >>2883006
    >What would the purpose of restricting pipe tobacco by mail even be?
it's just all tobaccos indiscriminately, and it's also to forcefully keep these business running because they are multipurpose (sell press, scratch-off games, sometimes it's a bar as well) and in a bygone era it was considered important to prop them up mainly for the press part
it's a dumb legacy thing kept because it help control and restrict
    >>
    >>2883003
It takes me a 30 minute drive to get to the closest tobacconist that sells pipe tobacco. I'm not sure how much EMP is, but tins range anywhere from $18 (C&D) to $25+ (Nightcap etc) and yes, for that price you can order it online and also pay for shipping, so it just becomes exponentially cheaper if you are ordering more than one tin at a time online, which of course you are. It gets even cheaper if you're buying bulk, since 1oz of bulk is like $8 and it scales down to $4/oz if you buy a pound, whereas online bulk begins at ~$4/oz and scales down to ~$3/oz if buying bulk or more like $2.50/oz if buying on sale.

I too would like to support the local tobacconist, but it just doesn't make any sort of financial sense to do so. It's too far away, I don't use the lounge, I don't talk to the guys there, the selection is not as robust as online (especially not the bulk, which is like 15 proprietary or renamed blends), and the price is only comparable if you're buying a single tin at a time. I usually only go if I'm already in the area and just pick up a random tin to try something new.

Alright guys so after realizing how fucking retarded that was, I went ahead and got the dremel. All pipes are good as new and it didn’t even take an hour. Wow that was fucking stupid of me.
Now i’m thinking about growing my own corn for cob pipes so I can burn through them guilt free for the rest of the year
    >>
    >>2883136
my neighbour is a farmer, he grow corn to feed his cows, i just know it consume a shitload of water to grow, now that might not be the same species of corn as the one used for cobs, i guess it can't hurt planting a few to try but i wouldn't expect too much
    >>
    >>2883138
I’m fairly skilled at gardening as it is so I think the biggest issue will be choosing the right cultivar of corn and quickly developing the craftsmanship not to waste my limited materials by splitting bowls and shit. Water is fairly cheap where I am and huge amounts of it are already part of my growing season budget.
I’m estimating that you could get two bowls per cob. Each plant will surely yield more than one cob if successfully grown to completion. I’ve never completely failed a crop so I’m not really worried about that.
So I’m estimating that I can get 50 plants into a 10x10ft patch so that’s quite a few cobs. Certainly not all of them will qualify for pipe making even if grown correctly so that’s a significant concern too. I’m not sure what the ratio of pipe-suitable cobs to unsuitable cobs will be. If anyone has grown their own corn for cob pipes I would genuinely love to hear about it.
    >>
    >>2883136
the cobs from standard varieties aren't woody enough to be worth smoking imho, along with most being too small
MM uses their own corn variety thats been grown for generations. they've sold the variety previously though, but i can't see any place thats open on the spot to get them however
you can always email them for some seeds, i'm sure they'd probably send them
    >>
    >>2883170
It's just 1860s field corn, couple centuries of selective breeding made most corn kernels too big for corncob pipes. Might be able to find an equivalent heirloom cultivar from a specialty seed store.
They also age their cobs for two years

Guy asked about PresMix in the pouch last thread. This is my number 2 tobacco and I smoke it daily.
    >It kind of feels fucky to pay premium prices and then just get the pouch. Low rent, honestly.
    >The tobacco was immediately much more dry than in the tins. Not necessarily a bad thing if you go through it fast and smoke hot anyway like I do but certainly does call relative freshness into question a bit
    >Maybe it’s just me but I think there could have been a minor adjustment to the blend. It seemed to lay harder into those perfumey, potpourri type notes than the tins. That could just be the moisture difference, though.
All in all I have no plans to rotate it out of being number 2 but I am indeed a little bummed with the pouches.

If you don't have ethanol you can just take neutral spirit like vodka from your liquor cabinet and apply it generously with a paper towel or even your finger. Wait a minute then scrape with your Czech tool. It's not that complicated.

It's still quite cheap in Spain and much easier to find as well. They have tobacconists in every neighbourhood and if it's a bit posh you can usually find tins of Peterson, Capstan, Chacom and Gawith & Hoggarth for about 20EUR. Even shittier neighbourhood tobacconists will usually have pouches of Half&Half, Clan and Borkum Riff lying around. If you take a cheap Ryanair return flight to Santander or Bilbao you can load up and your savings will make the cost of the flight worthwhile.

What’s your go to music when smoking a pipe, assuming you aren’t listening to ambient nature noise? I have no idea why, but I gravitate towards 70s Scandinavian folk rock like Folque or Folk & Rackare.
    >>
    >>2883322
I came from cigars as well. With a cigar, you can take a puff only every minute or so and it will stay lit. Very low maintenance. With a pipe, it’s closer to every 5-10 seconds you need to take a puff. Tampering is also crucial. But also, don’t be afraid to set the pipe down for a few minutes. Relighting is part of pipe smoking. Even with a perfectly packed pipe, a perfect cadence, a perfect tobacco moisture, and perfect tampering, you’re probably gonna need to relight at least twice if you smoke the whole bowl. I definitely needed to learn patience when switching from cigars to pipes.
    >>
    >>2883352
seconding the normality of relights. When you watch old tv, whether live action or animation you frequently see characters just light a pipe they had already been holding without packing it. Obviously this is partially because watching somebody pack a bowl is exceedingly boring but the other part is that relights just really are common to pipe smoking. You will see pipe smokers do it all the time in rl too if you watch any smoke for a while.
    >>
    >>2883352
    >>2883369
    3rding
relighting immediately after a relight is also common too, since you might not always get a good draw/catch on the previous light
it feels dumb, but if it didn't light, it didn't light
    >>
    >>2883322
    >>2883370
Quadding up on what everyone else is already saying—yeah relights are common. In fact, it’s kind of impressive to think about how oldheads used to use penny matches before modern zippos and bics. Idk how they did it (especially outdoors). They probably struck up a million matches for one evening smoke.
I think just learning a proper packing technique is half the battle. I rarely dry my tobacco any more. Even my more goopy/drenched tobacco only gets like ten, maybe fifteen minutes of dry time before I get too antsy and just pack my pipe. I make sure to get a good charring light in and swirl around the flame so everything catches fire. I might do this two or three or even four times, just to make sure that new bowl of tobacco has gotten toasty on top. I puff a bit harder towards the beginning of a bowl so that top layer keeps alight and the tobacco expands. Then once it goes out I lightly, lightly tamp everything down juuuust a little and from there it should catch a flame more quickly. Still though, I sip slowly for flavor and I’m constantly having to relight as the bowl goes on. Not a big deal.
If your tobacco truly can’t catch a flame you might have packed too tight. Or too loose. It’s just one of those things you gain a natural intuition for the more you smoke
    >>
    >>2883373
    >how oldheads used to use penny matches before modern zippos and bics. Idk how they did it (especially outdoors). They probably struck up a million matches for one evening smoke.
at some point i used matches, would use at least 4 matches and most of the time 8 to 12 matches for a full pipe
i've read some made primitive lighter with modified flintlock pistols, sometimes with a charred rope to keep a flame, also you could relight a match considering there was oil lamps kind of everywhere
    >>
    >>2883374
    nta
naw, there ain't no way you're lighting a pipe off a match cord if theres no flame
nor are you getting a flame like that off a striker of real flint (not ferrocerium) either

they had lighters back then, sure, but none for pipes, as that was a stick-match'(es) job, i.e., you grab a twig/splinter & light it off a candle/lantern
only until around 1910's is where the modern lighter come into production, and was actually able to be used to light pipes or cigarettes; other than that, it was only able to light another object (such as a match or candle) to which you'd light your pipe off of
    >>
    >>2883003
Yeah, I have a tobacconist about 5 minutes away and another about 25 minutes away. Really nice shop, large selection of cigars and pipe tobacco, nice lounge area, etc. But they wanted $16 for a 2oz bag of Lane 1-Q. And it’s not really their fault. I’m in Commiefornia, so it’s taxed to hell. But I just stick to buying online now.
    >>
Just looking to collect some anecdotal evidence here: has anyone experienced a blend that you popped, and it tasted dull or boring -- like hot air... So you jar it up in a mason jar and only revisit it years/months later and suddenly it inexplicably tastes way better?
    >>
    >>2883382
I posted about it here before, but I ordered a sample of Ennerdale and I hated it and I think it gave me a headache. I smoked 1 bowl. Thought about throwing it away, didn't even put it in a jar for months. Put it in a jar, dry as a bone. Decided ~1.5-2 years later to try it out again. Had to revive it with a wet paper towel because it was too dry. It was 100F outside, and it turned out to be the perfect smoke, and i smoked it for about a week straight. Loved it. Will probably end up ordering more the next time I order. Hopefully it doesn't take being dried out for 2 years to become delicious again.
    >>
    >>2883352
Puffing my pipe 4-6 times before I really accept that I actually did let it die and reach for the fire is a quintessential part of pipe smoking for me lol
    >>
    >>2883412
I posted in the last thread after everyone already migrated, but I recently had a religious experience with St Bruno. I thought it was so gross at first, but coming back to it a year later it absolutely blew my socks off. I then wanted to venture into the world of true lakeland-style blends so I ordered 1oz of Ennerdale. I’ve only smoked it twice so far but each time has been probably one of the most enjoyable flavors/aromas I’ve ever gotten with a pipe. It’s so polarizing; I get why people would hate the soapy florally stonefruit taste (it’s so hard to describe). And normally I really hate aromatics.
But ennerdale is so much more than an aro. The flavors are intimately married to the leaf, and persist all the way down to the ash at the end of a bowl. And the leaf itself: high quality and naturally amazing.
    >>
    >>2883442
    >It’s so polarizing; I get why people would hate the soapy florally stonefruit taste (it’s so hard to describe). And normally I really hate aromatics.
Yup, same for me. It was polarizing even for past me vs future me. It's the only tobacco I've had that I've ever considered throwing away and the only one I've left out for weeks/months not even jarring it because I couldn't imagine smoking another bowl. I don't know if it finally just "clicked" for me or if there is something about letting it dry out and age for ~1.5-2 years that made it that much better, but that 100F week where I smoked nothing but Ennerdale was truly incredible. I hadn't had tobacco hit the spot quite like that in a long time. And I don't like aromatics myself either. Every time I order, I usually get a few samples of some aros because I'm still searching for the one (surely there is one, right?), but I never end up liking any. I'm definitely ordering more Ennerdale next round (probably during whatever the black friday sales are) and I might have to start exploring the Lakeland angle some more. I even already have a pipe that I think I could dedicate to it if my "aged" Ennerdale experience wasn't just a serendipitous one time fluke.
    >>
I can't seem to get a good draw on my pipe. It's a standard corncob. I'm not drawing much smoke and it feels "thin". I also smoke cigars so I feel like my pipe isn't set up right. Should I pack my tobacco in tighter?
    >>
    >>2883457
Yeah probably not packing tight enough. I think a remedy for this would be tamping a little tougher once you get a good top char and central ember going. Don’t push it TOO hard & completely snuff it out, but give it a little extra “umph” down around the edges. By the time you get halfway down, the smoke should thicken up. Also don’t be afraid to flick your lighter up or strike another match and relight the bowl, even if just for a quick second
    >>
    >>2883426
How satisfying it is when that third puff reveals a tiny trail of smoke and you bring it back to life, though.

Anybody got any decent pipe/tobacco memes so I don’t have to make my own retarded AI versions?

I have been having a bit of a internal bitch and moan as I cannot find quite a few tobaccos in England and due to the fact that you can't order tobacco over the internet when I'm in Italy (I live in the middle of nowhere over there).
Can't find Psesbyterian as I was curious since it was talked about in the thread.
And I can't find Half & Half which I bought in Japan and really wanted to stock up on another packet.
Does anyone have any ways of getting rarer tobacco in England?

Early morning pipe is for when I’m thinking/working (most of the day)
PresMix is for relaxing and unwinding.
One of my favorite parts of pipe tobacco is that the blends give different nicotine feels that are extremely distinct compared to other types of tobacco. There’s nothing like that clear and vibrant mind you get from EMP. I smoke it more for the effect than flavor. PresMix is the best one I’ve found so far for chilling. It’s more of a calm and collected body buzz for me. Orlik’s gold came fairly close but it had a little less clarity of effect and I do not prefer the “bready” taste it seems to have.

Somewhere between Mac Baren taking over Planta and Scandinavian Tobacco taking over Mac Baren, Presbyterian fell off UK shelves. I do miss it. Half and Half I’ve never seen.
4noggins ship to the UK (or used to, at least), and have historically been quite careless when it comes to declaring their package contains tobacco. But duty is no joke if you get hit with it.
You could always go in the other direction - Gawith makes a load of blends you can’t buy outside the UK. A lot of them exclusively loose. The tobacconist JJ Fox and Snuff manufacturer Wilsons of Sharrow both have their own blends, I think made by Kohlhase and Kopp. There’s also J F Germains, who trade as Esoterica in the states - apparently the blends differ in more than name.

Cheers, I didn't think about focusing on what is only available domestically.
As with all products being sold, it's difficult to keep in mind what is and isn't being sold on other markets.
