    Night vision or thermal?

    you can have both now
    >>

Thermal is the far superior technology, but back when I was in the army thermal was mounted to a truck, nvg was mounted to your helmet. If you can put a good thermal on your rifle and carry it around now it wins every time. To even make nvgs halfway useful you need to put an infrared laser flashlight on the end of your m4.
    >>
    >>2879405
how many bjs did you have to give when you were in the army
    >>
night vision is for navigating in the dark. thermal is for seeing living creatures in the dark.
    >>
    >>2879427
    They were all optional.
    >>
    >>2879398
night vision requires ambient light or another light source. So if the moon is out, lots of stars it easier to see. Thermal does not need any light so if it new moon, fully over cast, darkest night you can still easily thermal.
    >>
    Neither, both are demonic technologies.
    >>
    >>2879629
these demons of yours, are they in the room with you right now?
    >>
    >>2879631
NTA but yes they are, always.
    >>
    >>2879398
I used on of those Pulsar scopes once to shoot hogs, insane stuff, you can see a mouse from a mile away and it even auto records everything, too bad they're expensive as hell.
    >>
    >>2879557
Rain really fucks thermal though. At least the thermal scopes i have, which are admittedly five to ten years old. But based on my understanding of the technology, that shouldn't really matter. The main improvement I've seen on thermals is their compactness. You have thermals the size and shape of reddot sight now.
    >>
    >>2879557
you can't really navigate and conduct movements with thermal at all
and from a tactical point of view, you can't positively identify targets at ranges that you can with night vision
    >>
    >>2879398
    thermal

you can tell which car out of 10000 just parked from 1000ft away.

you can tell a car HAD been parked until a few minutes ago, and narrow down at least WTF it wasn't from the pattern of the tire heat markers.

you can tell were someone was sitting before you showed up.

you can tell if a house is "activated" or not.
    >>
    >>2880937
Why do you care so much about parking
    >>
    >>2879398
passive night vision if you have money/are black and in the army
    >>
If you have like like 15k to spend you can get NVGs plus a clip-on thermal imager. They seem so cool bros I wish I would win the lottery
    >>
    >>2879398
I used both and nothing beats thermal if you need to spot something that is alive. especially today,it's not like what they had 20years ago. Every hunter i know changed nv for thermal. I could spot rats 500m away, nv can do 5m. It all depends what you want to do. And if you use nv then it's good to have a infrared torch. But not in a mil. setting, if the enemy has nv, you swinging your ir torch around is a big no no.

    >>
is there a nice solution for thermal or night vision for night hiking? or is it uncomfortable / pain in the ass?
i want to get one but i cant tell how shitty the cheaper ones are
    >>
    >>2879398
Thermal, unless you can afford white phosphorus. A majority of cheap NVG's are just IR.
    >>2879405
IR's super easy to pick up if your using it as a light.
    >>2880256
    >Rain really fucks thermal though.
The same goes for broad daylight (where inverted works a bit better). If your hunting, IR's far more reasonable as it's cheaper and the animals don't care your pumping the forest full of IR to see them.

    >>2879398
Two eyes. Two monoculars. Get the benefits of both.
    >>
I dont like how low resolution all the non stupidly expensive thermal gear is. Good for short distances and big targets but anything small is just a few blurry pixels on your screen and you dont know what the fuck you are watching.
    >>
    >>2879398
Night vision, specifically analogue types. Digital thermals and nvg dont have refresh rates good enough to consistently wear and operate with. On a rifle though, thermals all day.
    >>
    >>2879557
Gen 3 works fine under some of the darkest conditions. Theres always enough light to navigate.
    >>
    >>2879398
Unironically both. Walking/navigating with thermals only is both dangerous and difficult to do but seeing anything worth looking at with NVGs (like animals) is nearly impossible even if they are close to you.

During all the months that aren't winter I need a helmet mounted IR light for navigation because the supplemental moon light can't penetrate the canopy enough to be useful.

Its a gen 3 L3 Harris and I live out in the boonies where there is no ambient light.
