whool is inherently itchy and uncomfortablecotton is king
>>2878838Your skin is inherently weak and feeble. Consider staying /in/.
>>2878840I just wear cotton year round. Yeah, you need to bring changes in winter cuz once it gets wet you get cold, but it works. Just bring a pack.
>>2878838Two common misconceptions, right there.
>>2878845i heckin love wool, btw the "inherently itchy" guy has been at it for prolly 5 years at this pointthis is semi-related to wool but instead of buying a dedicated merino sleeping bag liner, i decided to pack my normal silk pajamas instead2026's main innovation is a waterproof sleeve that i can zip up my entire hammock setup into, and shove it in the bottom of my backpackso now i can just keep a set of jammies and clean thin wool socks totally dry and ready to get /cozy/
>>2878838>itchyDepends on the type of wool, how it's processed and how long you've worn it (flattens the fibers). My $10 super thick winter socks itch like crazy, but my medium merino socks never itch.
Yak wool and alpaca wool are good but ultimately too fragile to be used alone and need to be blended with merino and some spandex to make a proper sock.
I was always under the impression that wool is antibacterial and hence can be worn for longer without health issues. AI however told me that this isn't actually the case and it only smells less. Does anyone have experience with that matter?
>>2878903You should do whatever AI tells you. Under no circumstances should you pick up a book or read anything.Your first sources of information should be AI and then 4chan. Definitely gonna make it anon!
>>2878923Yes, I'm going to spend several hours finding and a dozen bucks buying a book that may or may not contain the information I'm looking for. I'm also going to not use a very useful tool for research because it triggers strangers on tibetan weaving forums. Especially for topics that will most likely never become actually relevant to me and are purely academic questions for my SHTF larping fantasies.
>>2878837I have two MacAusland blankets and two Alafoss blankets. The Alafoss don't come in as large sizes, but they are vastly higher quality when it comes to softness and warmth/weight.
>>2878841>it just works>except when it doesn’t work from a common occurrence cottoncucks, everyone.
>>2878903>worn for longer without health issuesBy the time you'd be getting health issues from your clothes they'd have to be so stinky people won't stay in the same room with you unless it's something specific like footwear related. If you maintain your hygiene better than 19th century soldiers smell is likely going to be your only concern.
>>2878953>a very useful tool for researchWell then feel free to march to your death following this """"""useful"""""" tool instead of asking people to educate a worthless gullible shitbag like you for free here.
>>2878837I went full retard and got one of these a year or so ago.Never looked back.
>>2878957>Alafoss blankets.Never heard of them before. Iceland, eh? Are they heavyweight? The MacAuslands I find to be very fluffy but a loose weave. Excellent for the bed, or in a sleep system, but not very 'windproof' for wearing like a cloak. The best one I've got is a Hudson's Bay 4-point. Boreal Mountain make good ones, too.The
>>2878965Nice ironwork. Don't these ruin the blanket, though?
>>2878968There’s four holes yes but you try to use the same holes and I wouldn’t say it ruins it. You… you do know you can darn wool right?
>>2878970>darn woolWhat the hell does that mean? Anyway you can just sew some thread around a button hole you've inadvertently made, and use that. That way you dont make new holes.
>>2878972Stay strong trains is a hard job.
>>2878966Loose weave for MacAusland is true for mine as well. I've had mine for about 15 years now, and I can't complain about their prices for a pure wool blanket, but they are definitely more of a rough budget feel compared to premium brands. I usually double layer them for warmth even when sleeping at home.By memory the Alafoss have a similar weave and hand feel to Pendleton or HBC 4-point, but I think are a bit fluffier and would weigh less. I don't own the Pendleton or HBC but have looked at them in shops. A single layer of the Alafoss blanket feels about as warm as two layers of the MacA. Icelanders claim the warmth and fluff is a unique property of their sheep wool as opposed to the processing, I don't know if that's true but it's possible. I shopped around quite a bit when I was in Iceland in 2018, all of the blankets were beautiful quality and are easy to recommend.>>2878972>>2878984Today you lern that Darn Tough Socks is actually a pun.
>>2878962Well in a survival/SHTF/war situation you really wouldn't care for smell. From various militaries it appears that they like merino for not burning, but not necessarily for being antibacterial. They also don't put a lot of effort in antibacterial synthetics, but stress that you need to keep the skin dry. So I guess the material is really mostly a smell problem, not a hygiene problem.>>2878963>asking people to educate you for free hereI believe that is exactly what I am doing. The important takeaway for me is that I put an exaggerated amount of thought into using non-smelling baselayers, and AI pointed out the flaw in my reasoning.
>>2878988You have forgotten the face of your father.
>>2878989An AI user will take your job and gloat about it.
>>2878991>jobLol. Lmao even.Neet and free since nineteen ninety-three.
>>2879015>Worthless parasite>Spends his time posting insults on 4chanWhy am I not surprised.
>>2879016>uses AI>calls other worthless parasites Did AI help you come up with that comeback? If I need a good come back I usually just wipe your moms chin.
>>2879034You're a worthless waste of biomass who hasn't created anything of value ever in his life, so I understand you're a bit out of touch, but in my job we use AI to solve real world problems that have practical applications and make us money. Honestly earned money, not neetbux that I lied to a social worker for to receive.
>>2879036>in my job we use AI to solve real world problems that have practical applications and make us money>us moneyYou got a turd in your pocket? We both know your statements are false. How galled you are at the idea that I don’t have to play your game. I own my property and home. You will never own anything.
>>2879036>but in my job we use AI to solve real world problems that have practical applicationslol, lmao even.
>>2879036You are angry because you are jealous of him. Stop going off topic.
>>2879072I'm not the one sperging out because someone dared to consult the machine devil.
>>2879087Did you really think people here would be supportive of ai? How brown are you?For something on topic, wife’s sister saw some Moreno wool socks on clearance (probably from last winter still) and thought of me and gifted them to me for at Sunday brunch after church yesterday.
>>2879100based sister-in-lawremember to get her sth for xmas
>>2878903It depends - like many things. Wool blankets will some times have a slight odor to them, not stink, but it also depends on how much youre able to air it. Some will say merino wool may have slightly less smell than european wool.
>>2878953>He doesn't know libraries are a thing>He doesn't know epubs and e-readers are a thing>He doesn't know he can literally pirate any book he wants with just an internet connectionMan, stop. You're embarassing yourself.
Got one of these. Shit's so cash.
Pendleton is still the king of wool blankets. they're fucking expensive as fuck but you get what you pay for. i have five, they all have perfect stitching, are thick and warm, and durable. Buy it for life quality. I also have some of the Pendleton lodge shirts, 100% wool, machine washable air dry. they're my staple daily cool weather fancy flannel. At $180 they better be good and they are.
>>2878903All things being equal, if you air it out especially in sunlight, you're good.
>>2878837Do you guys wear merino wool underwear or just go commando beneath your wool pants?
>>2881286i wear merino undies occasionallybeen meaning to get some more
>Get a Pendleton>Can’t stop being /cozy/ in it
>100% woolcan't stand 10 seconds with the itch>70% wool + 30% polyamideheaven for life>100% merinoeven more heaven, then they breakmaybe i should try old school and use a linen underneath the wool layer
Go commando. Underwear is for goys.

>>2882260Many are saying this
>>2879100These look like the old Costco wool socks, exact same you would see at Redwing Boots marked way the fuck up. Sadly the current ones aren’t as good.
>>2882960The sister in law routinely shops at Costco so that is a distinct likelihood.
>>2882961I might be wrong, but I believe that those are at least two years old. Extremely unlikely you would get them from a Costco within a year. I work at Costco, and I love you.
Scored some Smartwool socks at TJ Max earlier this year for an absolute steal. They were supposed to be marked at $16 a pair, but they didn’t remove them from the manufacturers shipping packaging, so they were $16 for three pairs of socks. That’s $5.33 a pair. They usually retail for $22 a pair. I think they were at TJ Max because they just couldn’t sell purple men’s socks. There are no defects or anything.
>>2882965She also hits thrift stores and places like >>2882966man I’d wear purple socks I don’t give a fuck. Purple is the color of royalty. I have a 100 percent purple wool blanket but no pics right now.
>>2882968I have a surplus German wool blanket and it’s maximum comfy.
>>2882970Fuck yeah! I love this time of the year because I get to go full retard >>2878965
Goodwill has a website that sells clothing from around the country. Sometimes you can find brands marketed toward the outdoors, and you can often find more casual wool clothing for really low prices. I found a 100% merino wool 1/4 zip sweater from Banana Republic for $15 (retails for around $120). It it’s a roll of the dice with wool. You don’t know if it was shrunken in the dryer to an absurd degree.
Just tried my first alpaca garment, 160gsm long sleeve from Arms of Andes. Wore it for three days straight on a beach hike, a long urban hike, and a run, only the left armpit started smelling like BO very slightly after the three days. Outperformed merino by a lot. Outperformed polartec alpha direct by a LOT. I just ordered a hoodie version in the same weight. Alpaca is Godly fabric. Kinda smells like an animal when you sweat though. I used an Outdoor research Ferrosi over it.
Got a Stanfield's wool Henley on the way, bros.
>>2883029>Be stanfields>Make heavy wool line>Literally the only unique thing they make>Enter european market>The only thing they sell on amazon is stupid polyester cotton stuff like you everyone and their mother makesTake my money. Stupid canucks.
>>2883041You can order from them directly on their website my guy.
hate to say it, but, Pendleton wool blankets are the best product. For $300-500 they damn well should be, and they are. They aren't super warm by themselves though, more of an all seasons type of blanket. The reason is they are very breathable.
>>2878903The smell problem is worse than bacteria. Don't get cuts, if you do stop to treat and bandage them, and you'll be fine. (Maybe stay up to date on tdap just to be safe.)
Wore my sweater today on an evening walk. Stay cozy, bros.
>>2883009I tried my first alpaca socks this year, got them from a local place at a festival. The lady said they wouldn't smell after sweating in them and I didn't really believe her but they were $24 so I got them and damned if they don't smell pretty fresh after hard hikes. They are clearly better in that regard than any other fiber I have used.
