How bad is a 986 boxster to own? I'm getting kind of bored with my NA Miata.
>>29133660You're going to hate yourself jumping into a 30 year old exotic german sports car. just move up a segment into a Corvette.
>na miatasimple to work onit just works, and if it doesn't, parts only cost $2go kart feelkinda slow but a charming kind of slowway better transmission feel, boxster has cables and linkages like a fwd car>boxsterit was the cheap porsche then, its the cheap porsche now. it is not fast and it does not feel fast but sounds nicecould bankrupt you at any momentyou get a cuck hole to work on the engine and parts are expensiveims bearing electric roof, random electronics that you never knew even existed and that shit will breaknicer materials than a miata, no denying thatfeels more like a machine than a toystick to the miata
>>29133660Everything about the Porsche is going to be dramatically more difficult and more expensive. I don't think the driving experience justifies the hassle over an mx-5.
>>29133678The suspension is simpler (read: cheaper to manufacture) than that of a Miata
>>29133660Nothing. Absolutely nothing drives like a Porsche. If you can afford it, GET IT.
>>29133679Sure, but if you wanted an oem replacement do you think suspension with a porsche sticker on it is going to be cheaper than suspension with a mazda sticker on it?
>>29133660Get an ND Miata. It will literally be better than the Porsche and it will blow you the fuck out dumbass
>>29133660I had a 996 for 20+ yrs and loved it (never had any of the oft-reported OMG! IT BROKE! problems). that said I dont know a lot about the 986 but i've read that the non-S models had fewer engine issues... but just go to rennlist and read up there. honestly I think because they're about the same age and tech level, a 986 is going to be kind of the same experience as an NA miata except more expensive (still pretty cheap tho if youre doing the work yourself, a boxster is not an expensive car to own unless you really buy a trashed engine or something).I dont know what particular boredom you have, so hard to say if a 986 will fix it, i just dont think its that different from an NA to really scratch any particular itch.
The Boxster was and is forever NARP (Not A Real Porsche). The death of Ferry Porsche was a travesty.
>>29133660The IMS bearing is an overblown issue. It only affected something like 8-9% of all Boxsters made. If it's still driving around today then it's either already been replaced, or it was one of the roughly 90% of all Boxsters that got a good one. Biggest issue I would be concerned with is bore scoring. The Lokasil coating they used on the cylinder walls of these engines will all fail eventually. It's one of those things that's also kind of irrelevant to how well the car was taken care of, it's a question of if, not when. That said ironically lower mileage cars that were babied, sat for long periods, had lots of cold starts and only ever made short trips tend to be more affected. Cars that were actually driven and got frequent full heat cycles in the engine tend to last longer and see this issue less, but again, they will all fail eventually. I seriously considered getting a Boxster S a couple years ago. This is what eventually made me decide against it.
>>29134171Porsche at the time had major issue beyond NARP: NARD, or Not A Real Dollar. hard to keep making 911s in that specific era, though they may be able to get away with a single model (30 trims, 25 of which are limited editions) lineup in a couple of years
>>29134176>The IMS bearing is an overblown issue.>It only affected something like 8-9% of all Boxsters madelol, what kind of cope is this?
>>29133660> i want all the cost of owning a 911 but none of the speed or handling or ride quality that make it worth it
>>29133660
>>29134195For how vocal people are online I think that's a startlingly low number of actual effected cars. People talk about these like it's a given that you must do the IMS bearing on any Porsche Boxster. The reality is if you had 10 of them lined up at a dealership back when they were new, statistically speaking only 1 of them would end up having a problem with the IMS bearing. I think that's not that bad, and again, I ended up passing on owning one of these cars for a different issue.
>>29133660I'd get a 350z before getting near this Macdonalds strutted shitbox bathtub car
>>29134199Wow only a 1/10 chance my car will blow up its engine! What a relief! And that’s ignoring the M96 bore scoring RMS AOS and cracking cylinder head issue. I feel so good buying this 180hp McDonald srutted NARP
>>29134254you know a fuckin wrenchlet typed this when they mention "RMS".pathetic
>>29134600As if you have even sniffed a NARP or could afford to pay someone to fix it
>>29134254>feel so good buying this 180hp McDonald srutted NARPKekd
>>29134674STFU you pikachu wrenchlet ricer motherfucker. or at least stay in topics like the 'sticker’ thread where your peanut gooner brain might have an informed opinion
>>29133660>How bad is a 986 boxster to own?Mine was incredibly reliable for what it is and the handling is greatUnderrated cars
>>29133660The NARP>is just as slow (180hp lmao)>has worse suspension (maccas on all 4 vs double bones)>has a worse shifter (cables like a FWD shitbox vs sticking straight into the gearbox)>has an electric top that will break>costs WAY more when it breaks>has a ticking time bomb of an engine with multiple fatal flaws>has an interior on par with GM's econoshitter attempts at the time>doesn't even have an LSDYeah, stick with the Miata. The NARP offers you nothing in return.
