I know there are some rule-of-thumbs, but I forgot what they are

Why not get a Prado or Hilux instead of shelling out luxury money for a Toyota?
    >>
    >>29133174
because they dont sell those models here?
    >>
    >>29133137
Shouldn't spend more than a 1/3 of your salary on a vehicle. So if you make close to 300k annual, as we all do, the 4Runner is a good purchase for you. You'll get safely to Costco and the office in style, while also letting everyone know that you aren't poor.

They don't sell them, plus, I like this Toyota 4runner TRD pro more than any other car. The only other SUV I like more is the Ford Everest, but it's only available in Australia, SEA, India and few select countries

    dude. these people are insane.

I make $141,000 a year with a low cost of living.
My car was $26,000 and even I felt like that was too much

I don't understand people buying $100,000 cars while having 1/3 the free cash I do.
    >>
    >>29133203
Painful these days. Every car with the bare minimum I want is like 38-45k and I make like 100k. Unless I want to buy someone's sloppy seconds with 100k miles and 200k farts trapped in the seat.

I see, you are a leaf and therefore beyond help.

If you live at home and don't have any major expenses, you can afford it if you make $50k a year. That doesn't mean you should do it because you're going to be hamstringing your savings and investments.

    >>29133305
I feel you. I was deadset on getting a new hybrid Civic, top trim to treat myself, then I read about Honda's head gasket disaster and now I don't even know. Not really feeling any other poorfag car as a daily driver. I'd literally just e-bike to work but I live in a small city with awful roads and super aggressive drivers, so that's off the table. The car market is so fucked.

Unless you live in a fly-over state, $300K is very much the minimum. You cannot afford a home, two cars, three kids, and a lifestyle at anything lower than that. That means both adults have good income, btw, not one person.
    >>
It depends on your overall finances. If your house is paid off, no outstanding debt, on pace with you’re retirement, and you have 50k you don’t need, can afford the monthly for the rest, and it will make you happy then fuck it go get it. Not a lot of people can do that though and you can get the same performance for a lot cheaper.

You should have enough money liquid to buy it outright but choose to debtslave with a low enough interest payment so you can use the liquid money to earn a higher yield than the car loan interest. It should have nothing to do with what job you have. If you have to use your income to pay for the car then don't. Drive a car you can afford and use your income to build weath to the point you can entertain dumb shit like spending 100k on a car. I'm nearly at that point with roughly 97k liquid between crapto realized post tax gains in savings and current crapto buys in the bear market and I drive a 2004 Honda Element and 2004 F150. I'm saving to replace my bathroom and remodel the exterior of my ugly ass house.

New cars are a scam. Especially six figures for a 4 cylinder shitbox of which there are literally a million used ones out there (some of which have bigger engines.)

How do I go from NEET to this? Is there a BIG-MONEY certification course? I don't mean a some fake youtuber thing but an actual "x amount of months for hippopotamus grooming and care license."

The only good debt is debt that makes you money.
A house can barley be justified taking a loan out for but a loan on a car is almost always stupid from a financial stand point.
The only time to get a car loan that's actually beneficial is if you already have the cash to pay for the car but you get 0% financing and you instead put the liquid cash into appreciating assets.
But most people don't have the much money to buy a new car outright and would be better off saving up 10k and buying the most reliable used car they can in cash.
If you really want a nice car but don't have the money for it, make sure you understand it will cut into your fun budget, that you're willing to make sacrifices and do your best to pay it off asap.

    >>29133210
Having said that I do really hate the online financial guru standard talking points of things like "no more than 10% of take home pay for a car" shit.
Most of those guy's are miserable to be around and never spend money on anything.
I can understand being financially responsible but you gotta live a little.
Not buying a 100k new car on a 60k salary living but buying a nice used car for 40k living.
You can get some really fun cars for 40k.
Just understand you have to make some short term sacrifices to get that nice car and judge if you think its worth it.

in america, $1 of salary buys $1 of car. you just need to make $97k before taxes.
    >>29133299
shitposting aside i make $155-160k and drive a 10 year old economy car with hail damage and minor rust/clear coat damage.
    >>
    >>29133210
Kek. I bought a 911 at 500k income and 1.5m net worth btw. It was probably a stretch but 2.5 years later my nw is 4+ so it doesn't matter.

    >Shouldn't spend more than a 1/3 of your salary
Buddy that's what you need just to qualify for rent, it can only be 1/3rd your income. Also you can only qualify for a house that's 3x your annual income. That should really piss people off more because 80% of the country can no longer afford houses.
