Can we get a winter driving horror story thread going?
>>29119534Couple stories:Accidentally got too hammered one January Wednesday night. I had a 2024 chevy traverse z71 (new body style) loaner car at time.Snoozed my alarm and slept through the emergency alarm, ended up waking up 2 hours later than normal (7:30 instead of 5:30). Got out the door in no joke 5 minutes, then started driving way too fast to work. Going like 55 in a curve rated for 25 (but no speed limit) type deal. Hit a slick patch, understeered into a snow bank, Traverse drove straight over it. No one saw, car was totally fine. I think I had enough ground clearance that the skid plate was what hit the bank. Backed it out and kept on driving.
One time it was icy and I skidded. Not on purpose.
>>29119570Second story: have 2021 dodge charger R/T with bald “sporty” all seasons. First snow of the year was one of those spitting snows, enough to get the ground wet and cold and maybe icy but not actually enough to accumulate. 6am or so, roads seemed fine. Got a little overzealous on the throttle on the on ramp to the freeway, ended up pointed 90 degrees to my left, overcorrected to the right, then spun 450 degrees until i was pointed straight again. All this happened on an empty 4 lane freeway, and somehow I had the wherewithal to steer with throttle and not smash the brakes.Third story: 2001 ford taurus without ABS, was on an on ramp to get onto a highway. Ford Ecovan in front of me lost control and I just had nowhere to go. Oversteered somehow and slid sideways into him, somehow only fucked up the rear driver door and not any other part of the car.

>>29119720>>29119638My gf is from Oregon and I'm from LA. I'd just bought a Genesis and didn't know all the features yet. First time driving it below freezing. Little snowflake icone comes on in dashboard and I loudly said "what the hell is that". Apparently Hyundais show that icon when road conditions are icy. Gf still laughs that the Californian didn't know what a snowflake was.
>>29119908It's the same alarm chime as "something has malfunctioned in the car", and it comes on just as a temp sensor reading so like everytime it drops below 37f or something like that, so it does it kinda often in the right weather and its unnerving cuz its the same sound as if your engine was having trouble or your tires popped and the car was alerting you oregon has some wild winter weathersheets of ice on the road in the high desert

I don't have any bad end horror stories from trucking. Some nasty conditions but always made it through. The worst combination I've had involved the tail end of a blizzard, snowfall ended but wind still blowing snow all over the place. The sun appeared at dawn creating sun glare + blizzard white out conditions at the same time. Could not see two car lengths in front of me and it was BRIGHT. That was easily a multi-car pileup situation if there had been traffic. Heavy blizzards, bad weather combinations with loose snow over ice, deep snow etc. Those are routine. Scariest is always when visibility drops to nothing especially if it happens suddenly.

>>29128857I had a job where the work van took me 45 minutes to drive a ten minute route in snow once. My normal route was three hours, I gave up at that point.I made 3 of like 40 deliveries.
i couldn't get back up the driveway because the snow had turned into black ice so i had to park on the street for the next few days

>live in Seattle>only snows a few days a year so no one really gets used to it>especially the californian transplants>it usually gets up to 40 during day and then 25 at night when it does, so lots of black ice>also its hilly as fuck>be driving home from work>reach the turn from the main street onto my residential street>its a sharp hill for 40 feet and then levels off>literally the only way into the neighborhood>hill is always icy because its shaded and apartments there dont turn off their sprinklers for snow>when you get home, you have to angle your car to follow the curve and let it slide down the hill at 5mph>everyone knows this>come up to the top of the hill>come to dead stop at the point of no return>check for traffic>you are clear for take off on runway 4>ease over the hill at 1 mph>right then, white woman slams open door to the apartment building that doesnt shut off sprinkler>"WOW I CANT BELIEVE ITS SNOWING!!!">runs out into the road right in front of my car to stare at sky>im slowly crawling directly at her but theres nothing i can do>flash high beams>she just stares at me>motion for her to get out of way>now staring but mad that a car would dare to not yield to her>still sliding toward her unable to do anything but gaining speed (still only like 4 mph)>oh god im going to hit this dumb bitch>her husband comes out and just grabs her by the collar and yanks her out of my cars way>he waves at me>i wave back>brakes get traction and shrudder back to life about a half car length after where she was standing>drive off>see her looking at him with her hands on her hips "Excuse me??" pose in the rearview>mfw wymyn
I was driving and there was a cyclist on the road. IN SNOW! He did not even have fog lights or high beams. He had blinking red lights but I thought it was just someone's house. It was literally impossible to see him. I had to swerve at the last second to miss him. He was lucky I already had my hands on the steering wheel. Or else my life would have been changed forever. Cyclists need to be culled for how easy it is to traumatize drivers permanently.
I always hated encountering squalls. It's terrifying to go from unlimited visibility to then not even being able to see a thing within seconds>clear skies around noon>weatherman says nothing about the risk of snow>go out for groceries, my turn to cook>take road i always take, speed limit is 30 miles/hour on a curvy road>half way through my trip>suddenly squall>the road i thought i was able to drive on while asleep suddenly seems alien to me>where is the gentle left turn? >can't see any landmarks>dont even know if person who was in front of me is stopped or whatI ended up in a snow bank on the side of the road. 3 other people on the same road ended up in the same situation. Always stay in your car until the squall is over so you don't get hit.

When I was a depressed teenager that didn't give a shit about anything I would always go to work for my shit ass night shift job no matter what the roads were like because nothing else was going on my my life. One time I drove to work through a blizzard at 9pm and it was such a complete fucking white out that once I was on the highway I could only tell I was still on the highway because if I veered too far either way I'd hit the rumble strips, had literally nothing else to go by. At first I wasn't even properly in the lanes, I was straddling the middle of the road until I saw an oncoming car almost directly in front of me and realized I was off (that was the only other car I saw that night, they weren't even plowing yet)I've driven in some stupid conditions before but literally driving by feel in a complete white out at night for about a half hour straight was by far the dumbest thing I've ever done. At least I got to work on time.
