    >>
    >>29117596
Theyre a couple sizes larger but the truck is a "highboy" or a highboy clone.
You can see on this factory (appearing) highboy that the top of the tires line up at a different point in the fenderwell but the wheels line up the same with the bodywork (pretty obvious in the rear).
It was a factory 2" lift because of driveshaft angles needed for a divorced transfer case.
    >>
    >>29117622
those are actually different bodies (bumpside 67-72 vs dentside 73-79)
they had different frames with different wheelbase. the earlier trucks actually had different track widths front vs rear. i've heard the earlier trucks were taller

See >>29117597. The tyres were 20 years old and utterly knackered. Hardest part was de-beading; some came off easier than others, but they were all virtually bonded to the wheel. Could also be that the near 50 year old machine is a little tired, but either way, the job is done and I have 5 fresh new tyres. Hell of a difference in ride quality, I tell you h'what~

If you want to do a restomod, go for it.
If you want to do a factory restore, find something with more support or it will be an absolute money pit and youll spend more time hunting for parts than enjoying it.
Either way just get a donor with solid frame and sheetmetal. You can fake a headlight bucket but a rotted fender is limited on sources.

As for the vehicle itself- its like an old jeep or bronco. Mechanically simple
    >>
    >>29117646
    67-79 use the same windshield.
There are more similarities than differences. Those 2 gens are functionally interchamgable with major overlap with the 65/66.
    >>
    >>29117860
    no they fucking weren't.
for starters, the frames are narrower for 4wd
    then the crossmembers are different
actually that's the easiest way to tell a highboy is the front crossmember sticks out from the bumper
    completely different
in fact you have to lift the truck AT LEAST 4" to 4wd swap a 2wd frame because the crossmember will hit the front dif

Did the explorer blocks not have the issue of splitting at high rpm/power levels? If so, might have to get one.
    >>
    >>29119403
No difference in the blocks. They had gt40 heads and intake which is why people grab them for junkyard builds.
Theyre not LS power levels kind of a block but they can handle 450hp easily.
Those that say they split at 300hp are retards who threw a 150 shot of nitrous on a block with 10psi of oil pressure. Ive seen a few cracked blocks (even snapped a crankshaft and blew apart a block myself) and ive never seen a failure under 500hp that wasnt some backyard build with questionable parts and tolerances.
If a con rod snaps at 5k and binds up the rotating mass causing the block to crack some yourtuber is just going to hop on bandwagon and blame the factory block instead of his temu stroker kit.

    >I've got a 90 fox 5.0
    I have an '89 and a "90.
The '89 has 89k original miles (had it since 2000 or 2001 and it had about 44k and had sat for 5 years). Its getting close to rolling to 90k and I drive it less and less.

The '90 i went stupid with.
Shattered the engine so I started with a new block from ford. Its just a stock block but one of the last NOS they had in inventory.
347 stroker kit. 5140 crank (4340 was still a big price jump back then). 4340 h-beam rods, SRP pistons.
AFR 185 heads w/ 58cc chambers, no air injection, with their "strip" porting (they had 3 levels, street, strip and track, not sure if they even do that anymore).
Factory style chromoly lifters (link bar noise is annoying, stick with the spider), chromoly pushrods, 1.6 aluminum roller rockers, shaft mount with girdle.
Need tall valve covers to clear girdle (and its friggin close).
Shorty equal length ceramic headers. Reusable header gaskets with graphite inserts. Stainless locking bolts (the type with anti-rotation tabs, im not a fan of wire). Full stainless exhaust, x-pipe, no cats. Mufflers sound like a dump truck, I miss the 40 series flownasters but they only come in aluminized steel.
Main bearing girdle (have to do a little dremel work on the oil pump and a little tweaking on the sump pickup tube).
Melling high volume standard pressure pump. Chromoly oil pump driveshaft. MSD polished distributor w/MSD 6AL and coil.
Gear drive timing set and a modified 302 cover (ate my 5.0 cover when I shattered the engine).
    Fluidamper harmonic balancer.
    Aluminum underdrive pulleys.
Custom polished aluminum accessory brackets because I didn't like where the Paxton would mount so I changed everything.
BBK SSI intake. Custom 3/4" phenolic to clear the valve covers. BBK aluminum fuel rail with adjustable regulator.
70mm TB (polished), 80mm MAF (polished), 42 pound injectors.
About a grand in ARP bolts including 12 point stainless for anything thats visible.
    Chrome oil pan

    >>29119656
    Just to clarify-

I built that bottom end and ran the stock top end for awhile. I didn't have the money for the complete build so I had to penny pinch on the 5140 crank.
A few years later I had excess funds and went retarded with finishing it off.
I had kind of planned it that way. I would rather have a stout bottom end and just swap heads later rather than have some hypereutectic pistons and nice heads for immediate satisfaction and then have to pull the block again.
    >>
    >>29119665
    Ok, moving on..
    .
The A9L/A9P in the mustang is the best computer available at the time. People will pull a mustang EEC and slap them in their F150.
The Mustang was Fords flagship model so they played dirty (literally). Because of the A9 series they never hit Corporate Average Fuel Economy requirements and were fined every year for 87-93.

My MAF has a "green tube". So it's suppose to be tuned for 42 pound injectors (green top).
    That shit doesnt work.
You can get away with 24# injectors but after that theres just too many other parameters besides pulse width to compensate for that you have to run some type of aftermarket or piggyback EEC.
If you run 19# or 24# injectors the stock EEC is pretty good at compensating even with a stroker and a cam. Just be aware that if you go too far that it becomes undrivable (like fouling the plugs to the point it wont start after 50 miles).
Megasquirt has come a long way since it was just a breadboard kit sold out of some dudes garage. Holley and Accel have some pretty easy plug&play kits.
The piggybacks dont require any physical modifications other than plugging into the EEC service port but they ARE NOT plug&play and have a steep learning curve.

    >Custom polished aluminum accessory brackets because I didn't like where the Paxton would mount so I changed everything.
Ah sweet, I saved your PAxton pics from last time I asked, but not on this computer, so I can't see what brackets you have/had. What brackets? lol
    >>
    >>29119687
Well I actually had 2 issues.
The factory paxton kit moved shit around and put the alternator down below the crankshaft centerline.
Here's a pic with a vortech (same bracket, ill get to that).
I was not a fan of the thought of having my alternator 6 inches from the asphalt and sucking up mud and road debris.
The other issue is that I didnt like running 2 belts.
So I ditched the air injection pump (duh).
Lost the A/C (I was young, I regret that now), Put the alternator where the A/C compressor was, cut down the paxton bracket to bring it inline with the stock crank serpentine and then figured out a tensioner.
I had to find a 6 rib pulley to match the factory ratio when combined with my underdrive crank pulley and machine it to fit (unfortunately its the only non-polished pulley).
The power steering pump uses a standard aftermarket polished aluminum bracket.

The alternator was actually an aftermarket bracket that was intended for stock placement on the passenger side that I basically just lined up on the driver side and simply drilled and cut off the excess (pic)
    >>
    >>29119707
The vortech uses the same bracket because it was designed by a paxton employee.
Paxton thought that nobody would want the noisy gear drive unit so the engineer that deigned it was given their blessing to take his design and start a new company.
Oddly enough another employee designed a belt driven unit and paxton didnt like the perceived failure potential of a rubber belt so he left and started Procharger.

And now the paxton ball drive supercharger rights are owned by a tire shop in California (not even kidding)
    >>

    >And now the paxton ball drive supercharger rights are owned by a tire shop in California (not even kidding)
Yeah, Paradise Wheels. I've bought an oil cooler off of Craig for my flathead McCulloch/Paxton SN60 build, but will use your pics for drilling and tapping a larger cooler like you did for my Fox. Thinking about going the VR-4 upgrade route as well. I'll be piecing my kit off of Vortech parts and that one supercharger parts guy down in Dallas. All of this slowly and eventually lol.
    >>
fugg. my chinesium radiator is letting me get by, but it looks like i'll need to fork out for a decent one. chinesium rad core is only 42mm in depth, while the more expensive repros have 2 30mm length-tubes. rad seems to be able to just cope as long as it's not on the highway. temp will also very slowly keep climbing in hot traffic, once moving again it'll drop down a bit but not much.
    >>
    >>29119733
Just for the record those fitting placements are just what I felt was "right". Other SN owners might think "wtf dude" or "oh ya, that makes sense".
Worse case scenario you stick a plug in the hole. And ive welded up and polished clean larger holes so the case can never really be destroyed.

And if I didnt mention this before-
My cooler is mounted in front of the driver wheel (pump is on the subframe next to it- nice flat mounting surface). That might be relevant.
I would have gone to the passenger side but I had intercooler piping taking up a lot of room over there (also why I didnt just put it in front of the radiator).
I dont have the intercooler hooked up anymore. I knew it was a double edged sword to begin with. Ya theres a slight power increase under sustained boost but the responsiveness becomes sluggish because of the volume and after I grew out of the peak dyno number phase of youth I went back to the "instant on" that superchargers are intended to be.

So if you drill be sure to lay out where your hose routing is going to be- you might want to mirror my drills depending on where youre mounting the cooler.

As for the vr4 impeller- ya theres a substantial boost increase.
Real world numbers iirc on the 60 is 7 pounds (peak). Later models spun them a little harder to get 9 out of them.
My GSS is the last of the ball drive units (I just read that in my head like the legless mechanic in Road Warrior) and I still have the standard impeller.
The real question is how youre going to build it for that 14 pounds of boost.
Im running 11.1:1 compression so shes plenty happy when I hit 5 pounds. If I get froggy with it I can spin the tires going into 3rd. Thats cool if youre trying to get likes on YouTube but in the real world you start to understand what the boomers said by "drivability".

recoring these days costs as much as a new radiator, usually more. i still have my old copper brass one that i wanna practice desoldering and rodding out though, nobody around here does it without asking for as much as a brand new unit, so i figure i could try my hand at a new side hustle.

#1 troubleshooting guru in the universe
    >>
    >>29127497
She finally started tonight but doesn't sound too good bros.

Cold start idle, closed choke, high RPM, sounds OK:
    https://drive.google.com/file/d/1N2li8Dhcx2uwCaDCxaHZeroBEN-6uOAC/view?usp=sharing

Open choke idle after a few minutes, sounds really rough
    https://drive.google.com/file/d/1hIM2oc4RhOx05NKTjQrWQY_vJETz0Lr3/view?usp=sharing

Timing light looks like either I don't have all 8 pistons or I'm dumb
    https://drive.google.com/file/d/1s46S02wRmxHi_-L8gPWPzozl6T2WYNiR/view?usp=sharing

Anyone familiar with small blocks and what to do next? Adjusting distributor cap doesn't help

    >>29127501
Not sure why the sarcasm. This is the first time I've done something like this so I'm pretty happy I got it started.
    >>
    >>29127503
sarcasm is because Spark is inherently electrical.
timing is out so you're going to have to learn to do that. you're also going to have to learn how to tune a holley carburetor. good news is that it's easy and after that you know how to tune the entire car and many other cars.
why are you blindly working on a tri-five chevy?
    >>
    >>29127505
Yeah, I think I'm just going to have to retime it from scratch. I don't seem to have a bolt on the front of the crankshaft to turn it manually, so my only other option seems to be on the flywheel.
    >why are you blindly working on a tri-five chevy?
Said it yourself, once you go through it once it becomes easier. Gotta start somewhere. If I can't I can have a shop retime it or figure it out. My car I've owned 10 years
    >>
    >>29127509
you should have a bolt in the middle of the crank pulley but i don't think the timing isn't out enough that you need to spin the engine without the distributor installed... in fact you shouldn't do that.
    >>
    >>29127511
Yeah I mean... I feel like I lined the new distrubor back up almost exactly and cap adjustment should account for anything small right? What else besides manual crank rotation and adjust cap, carb vacuum advance issue? It sounds a lot better on a fresh start than after a few minutes running, so maybe....
    >>
    >>29127517
you haven't even mentioned setting the idle sped, floats or the idle mixture yet. don't spin the engine without the dist installed please
    >>
    >>29127521
Indeed, thank you Mr. friend. The carb hasn't been tuned in 10 years, so it might be time to learn about that and see what's left after. How hard can it be! Famous first words.
    >>
some freshly machined cylinder heads that my dad had got covered in surface rust. they were sitting quite a while so they have more than just the usual light film, but not quite pitted (to the naked eye)
what's the best way to clean the sealing surfaces?
    >>
    >>29127523
tuning will be a lot easier (and more fun) if you can get an afr and vacuum gauge hooked up
    >>
    >>29127525
Runs miles better by timing first without vacuum. capping the vacuum line and adjusting it to be 8-10~ degrees BTDC. At 0 degrees it smells and looks far too rich... as I've learned that is expected

first time using chassis saver paint, stuff is gnarly. I put two coats on and it was not satin at all, very glossy, turns out you're supposed to stir it up really well because the satiny stuff settles out. I did that for the third coat and it turned out ok but the can started fizzing, the stuff is really chemically active. And holy shit the drip marks dry thicc.

After driving a while, then turning the car off, I get a faint smell of gas from the carb. I can see fuel dripping down the carb barrel.

Thermal gun says the fuel pump and carb are warm (150F), so I'm guessing the fuel is expanding and forcing its way past the seat. I already put insulation around the fuel lines. How hard is it to add a regulator and a return line to the tank? Can I just plumb the return line to the intake side of the fuel pump instead?
    >>
    >>29129166
Stop trying to make up a scenario to explain a fault.
Theres a million V8s with holleys and mechanical fuel pumps on the freeway right now that arent having any type of "boil over" issues. A carb can easily hold 10psi of fuel line pressure.

Hiw old is the needle&seat in that carb?
    >>
    >>29129184
    >bro just like don’t think bro thinkings bad bro trust me
    >>
    >>29129307
Finding an imaginary fault isnt "thinking".
If the fuel pump is 150°, then how long does it take for the fuel going through it to heat up? (I.E. was it already at maximum expansion when the key was turned off).
Whats the expansion volume for gasoline between 80° and 150°?
How much pressure would a theoretical "cooking" of the gas create vs how much pressure is a properly functioning needle&seat capable of holding?
Why doesnt any of my carb'd V8s need insulation on the fuel pump or fuel lines?

Now what's the odds that the consumable portion of the carb (needle&seat) is worn out or gunked up?
    Is the float itself sticking?
Has the weapon hooe been checked?
    >>
    >>29129362
    >*has the weep hole been checked
    >>
    >>29129184
    >>29129362

Valid questions. The carb was redone back in 2018 before I got the car. This is a really tiny Weber (30DGS), so I don't know if it can actually hold 10psi. The shop manual says the pump should put out no more than 3.5psi.

There's no weep hole on these carbs. Apparently they just weep into the main throat...
    >>
    >>29129495
8 years is a long time for a little brass needle&seat if you dont know the history.

After seeing that my Rose and this roadster are basically twins, I'm really tempted to sell my MX5 and keep this Roadster instead... it'll depend on how slow it is, I suppose. The MX5 isn't exactly a powerhouse, but considering that it's nearly 40hp up on the B-Series, I wonder if the MG will feel too slow... I suppose I'll find out once I get it running.

this is in my 67 dodge phoenix/plymouth fury with a 383, 727 and 3.23 diff. Mopar C body, so definitely not a small or light car...
i swear something is off, but i triple checked the receipts and i definitely didn't make a typo...only other thing i can think of is that during that time i was fairly easy on the throttle, but also turned on the auto-tune feature on the carb cheater. But that shouldn't have THAT much of an impact...definitely not complaining, but still, wtf?

Well fuck. My dodge burnt down last night. Was backing it out of the driveway then as I get to the top, I see the glow of a fire from beneath the engine bay. Bro had bought a CO2 fire extinguisher for something else a while back but it was a puny 2 kg one which didn't do much. Only other thing we had was a garden hose with my thumb squeezed over the end of it, and unsurprisingly, it just couldn't put out the fire.
There was a fire station literally around the corner from my house but it took 15 mins for a firetruck to arrive, these guys must've been out to another call so they probably had to get another one.
Seems to have started by the fuel pump. Still quite confused because all the rubber fuel lines were only a few months old, and there weren't any sections that might've been too tight. We suspect the bucking from the engine might've weakened the line over time somehow, but who knows.
Gutted because I had wanted to race the thing on a circuit, and do other shit with it, but also somewhat relieved because it was kind of a running basket case; leaks at both windscreens, rust spots/holes that were getting worse, and the bottom end was tired and making a fair bit of noise.
At this point I'm just glad that I got to daily it for as long as I did. Put about 3000 km on it in two months. I don't think I could live with myself if it was just a garage queen. Made very, very close friends with it, got to larp as a tofu delivery driver, and never got old seeing the looks on randoms' faces as I drove around. The 5 speed V8 I'm looking at might dampen the blow a bit.

huh, never knew that was a thing. i know for sure my car definitely violated that from the factory. It was basically fuel tank/sender > hose > hard line > hose > hard line > hose > fuel pump > hard line > hose > fuel filter > hose > hard line > hose > carb
Would've been at least a foot of hose over that entire path. I wonder if using fuel injection hose would've changed things...

and fugg. the wreck is currently at my mate's house but we didn't go there today else I would've taken pics. From the front it reminded me of Christine. And talking about that, while it was burning, it actually tried to start back up again lmao, the classic mopar starter sound just kept whirring till the battery cables melted.
I should hopefully be at his place tomorrow to help out with some shit and to grab bits I need from the car, will definitely take pics then.
The alternator's aluminium body actually melted at the bottom where the flames must've licked it. But the heads were completely intact, guess it must be aircraft grade aluminium in the heads or something. The alternator was a reman I got off amazon for 40 bucks lol.

We didn't go to my mate's place today cuz we checked out the 81 Ford Fairlane I had been eyeing for a while now, pic related. Was listed for 35k originally, then dropped to 30k, then deleted the ad, then it reappeared at 25k, then 22, then deleted the ad again, then relisted it for 25k.
I could tell he was really attached to the car, he told us it got him through some very rough times in his life. He reckons he owes his life to it, it was one thing that gave him purpose to keep moving forward.
I told him I was gonna drive the piss out of it as a daily and fun car like I did with the dodge, and he also felt bad about what happened with that car, so we ended up at 22k. I wanted it for 21k, but honestly, the paint and body was was actually in fan-fucking-tastic condition for its price, plus it has a 351 cleveland with a T5 gearbox behind it.
It does need some minor work to it, but otherwise it really is in good nick. Fuel gauge and possibly stock temp gauge inop (aftermarket gauges are there though), and the sunroof is currently stuck open, and it does have a leak from the rear main seal. But otherwise garage-kept all its life and he kept on top of servicing etc. The test drive was absolutely fucking fun.

the previous owner before him had also sprayed the shit out of it in fish oil as a rust preventative so the body is extremely good for its age. There's like two or three very minor, almost superficial rust spots at the bottom of the front passenger door, and a rust hole the size of a ballpoint pen tip in the firewall near where the hood closes, for the former, doors can be got easily because quite a few generations/models used them, and the latter looks like it has been halted in its tracks.
The wheels are 17 inch chasers with 235/55s on the rear and 215/55s on the front, but I do want to go down to 16s, maybe even 15s. He also installed 1 inch lowering blocks on the rear which is why the rear looks so stanced, I'm gonna take those out. It also has an LSD in it as well. I think it's the ford 9 inch end.
Disc brakes all around but a bit meh, gonna see if I can get some better pads for them.
