This coming summer (2027) I will be going on a 3 and a half month hitchhiking trip from Lisbon, Portugal to Istanbul, Turkey. I am considering doing some trainhopping in Eastern Europe, but for the most part I am unsure. Any advice in regards to train hopping in general? Should I even consider it at all?

    For some background:
    > 19y/o male
    > Some experience doing small trips in Europe, never trainhopped before
    > EU Citizen (Austrian)

At best, you'll end up broke and in jail.
At worst, your body will never be found after you are raped for several days.

Don't take riding the rails lightly. What you don't know could kill you. You should get an experienced mentor IRL. Talk to some oogles and see if they'll take you under their wing. Idk maybe you need to barter some cigarettes or fent for "oogle lessons" but seriously there are so many dangers to train hopping that you just can't risk finding out on your own

Like ever wonder why crustpunk train hoppers have bandanas w them? Bc if you get stuck in a tunnel while riding freight and the noxious fumes build up, you literally can't breathe and in a best case scenario you can pee on the bandana and breathe that in for a little bit

Also the doors on certain freight cars can slam shut unexpectedly and you'll run out of oxygen and die

There's a reason oogles have a short lifespan

    >Any advice on train hopping
    Yeah uhh don't lol
Especially if you aren't already like familiar with all of the freight train routes or how the networks operate you could just end up stuck

Some anon just made a nice thread about riding for free, you should check it out.

    Just use flixbus
Lisbon to Madrid is like €10
It would probably cost you around €150 for the whole trip using buses and regional trains

I'm going to sound like an idiot when I say this, but I'm not poor, quite the opposite.

I'm really just wanting to do the trainhopping for thrill. Which makes my argument even less justified.

I forgot to mention, if they catch you, psychotic yard bulls will gladly beat you to a pulp or rape you unironically. Seriously you need to know what you're doing. I'm only trying to encourage you to do more research and actually gain the trust of some local oogles who can give you tips for the areas you'll be in. It's a pretty gatekept way of life for a reason
