Will America ever get a major high speed rail system?>What will it look it?>How long may it take?>How fast will it go?
>>2083482>Will America ever get a major high speed rail system? No ... Long answer Noooooooo. The reason is that, Any route that has enough density to support HSR is also dense enough to have thousands of level crossings that would cost 100's billions to make tunnels or overpasses for on top of purchasing the rail right of way . ANY route that does not have so many level crossings, and thus affordable to build ... does not have the ride density to support it.
>>2083482California's HSR and Brightline West WILL be completed eventually, even if it takes another 20 years (although I expect Brightline to finish before the California HSR does). It's a sunken cost fallacy at this point, they have to finish these projects
>>2083482Not on the surface. Too bad Musk turned out to be lying about what The Boring Company can do because cheap tunneling would have made all manner of transportation projects economically viable. But as often happens with Musk, the reality didn't end up being anywhere near the promises.
>>2083482This will never happen because most of America was settled in the 20th century, and thus Americans, unlike their European counterparts, actually had the benefit of hindsight, and so could avoid the same ancient developmental baggage that still plagues Europe's infrastructure such as its cramped cities in favor of more modern ideas like detached houses with private lawns and infrastructure that better enables private transport such as cars in favor of inferior, older forms of rail transport that is limited to 2% gradient and is inherently tied to rail that Europeans are forced to rely on as a consequence of them having been settled hundreds to thousands of years ago.
>>2083482You guys are making me sad :(But you guys aren't wrong though
>>2083485That's basically true, securing the ROW and dealing the all the crossings (constructing new bridges) plus local opposition will drive costs up so high it becomes unfeasible.>>2083486>they have to finish these projectsNo they do not lol. The future of BLW is especially vulnerable>>2083487>Too bad Musk turned out to be lying about what The Boring Company can do because cheap tunneling would have made all manner of transportation projects economically viableUnironically a shame. What a bust that was. If he'd figured out a real solution it could have revolutionized transportation, both road and rail
>>2083498>No they do not lol. They're already broken too much ground and sank too much into it. It's going to fucking happen even if they pivot to just turning them into overglorified toll roads
the most generous thing I can say is that it's good there seem to be people watching youtubes about the Shinkansen and saying "it would be a good thing to have that here".however, because social media is reality for a depressing % of the global population, this means that they're not interested in boring humdrum yaaaawn stuff like 'material conditions that exist in observable reality', or 'where would your proposed ultra-high-speed triple-decker hyper-maglev-40000 trains be built, and who would build them'. they want to take the Cheng Bing Dong Wu Limited Express from Des Moines, Iowa to Shreveport, Indiana, against the Mt Fuji backdrop, during the sakura bloom season.i'd call it a psyop, but it's not even that sophisticated. just stupid people wanting good stuff but for the wrong reasons
>American HSR
>>2083498>>2083487Nuclear Liquid Salt tunnel borers have been melting rock since the 70's for the maglev COG interconnects, you retards. Grow up.
>>2083485Also, all passenger rail routes are competing with airports. They could build the Shinkansen and double the top speed with technological wizardry, and it would still be uncompetitive with airplanes, along with every other flaw you mentioned.
>>2083498>Unironically a shame. What a bust that was. If he'd figured out a real solution it could have revolutionized transportation, both road and railYou realize that The Boring Company exists and is still at it and is installing projects and faster TBMs as we speak, right? They aren't drilling or permitting as fast as anyone wants (the permitting issue in particular is the main issue), but tunnel projects are happening.
>>2083920Their miracle fix was just boring narrower tunnels that only their cars can navigate. Fine, but not a breakthrough in tunneling. If their TBM scales up to a useful diameter like 2-lane highway w/ shoulder or stack train height, that could be interesting but I don't think it does
>>2083927Fix? Their tunnels were always small, and that hasn't changed at any point. The argument for small tunnels was faster boring speeds. They've yet to claim aspirations for wider ones.
>>2083933No they were definitely touting themselves as revolutionizing tunneling when they first showed up. Not a game changer at all since it can't be used for a tunnel that matters (highway, rail)
>>2083920Muskrats are tedious. Yes the company exists. Yes it is doing projects. No, it hasn't accomplished 0.0000000000000000000000000001% of what Musk promised when he founded it. Want to know what really holds us back? People like you who are so obsessed with your celebrity and political crushes that you never hold them accountable for falling far short of their promises. I know this post isn't going to seep into the concrete block that's between your ears but at least others will know that your alternate reality is just more foolish nonsense apologetic for someone who constantly promises everything and delivers next to nothing. >but permitting... PERMITTING!You really are a pathetic excuse for a human.
I want to see a 250 mph rail connection between Boise and Salt Lake City.
>>2083942>>2083943Elon Derangement Syndrome makes everyone look at something, see it hasn't happened yet, immediately decide it will happen never, and claim everyone who is capable of looking at something without coming to a snap conclusion "a delusional Muskrat." Learn some impulse control and patience instead of failing the marshmallow test day in and day out.
>>2083969Yeah well The Boring Company ended up being vaporware which is too bad because anyone who can bore real tunnels cheaper is going to make a lot of money
>>2083920I once lived like two blocks away from where his company proposed a pedestrian tunnel to connect some residential areas to the north with the commercial district to the south, separated by a railroad and a somewhat swampy area near there. Never did happen, even if the city approved of it.
>>2083482No.Big ChooChoo will put mile long freight on it in five minutes.
