Why do people subject themselves to this in this day and age?

It's expensive, costs more than a flight.
    >>
    >>2081340
last time i took the train it was about half the cost of an equivalent flight

way slower but i was also able to bring a Gun
    >>
    >>2081343
Yeah but OP is talking about sleeper trains.

It's a vacation on the way to your vacation.
Maybe you're still young enough that when you go on vacation you're like, "I want to do X and then do Y and then Z and take the most advantage of my time off by doing everything I can." But as you get older, you're going to want more and more of a ratio of downtime to active time during vacations. Maybe it starts as a day at the hotel recovering from your flight. But the downtime is a spectrum and it shifts.
For me, a train ride is a nice way to shift the downtime. If I'm going to be crashing at the hotel for a day or two rest anyways, I'd rather have a hotel where the scenery is changing the entire time. Plus the lack of Wi-Fi and cellular data helps me transition into not dealing with work or my computer gaming addiction, so I'm ready to focus on the time at my destination.
At the extreme end of the spectrum is cruise ships, when people get so old they want the entire trip to be "the hotel" with just brief activities that they can take it or leave it.

    trains r comfy and cool
    >>
    >>2081335 If i had to choose between a flight and a sleeper train passage, it would always be the 2nd because noone would limit the items I could have with me on board.

You can bring a gun with you on a flight, it just has to be declared, checked over with TSA, have the appropriate locks in place, and can't be loaded although IIRC you can also transport ammo but it must be in a separate container

I feel that a lot of it is pandemic-era vibes more than practical reality, but there's still something quite nice about going to sleep somewhere, and then waking up somewhere else.

That's an Amtrak "roomette", so it has its own door. Amtrak doesn't have shared/berth style sleeper compartments anymore, which is a shame because even roomettes are fuckoff expensive compared to any European berth style sleeper. Hell I paid to block out an entire bank of berths in Europe and it was still cheaper than a similar distance trip on Amtrak.

Because you can have sexo with your gf while you’re riding through the night.

I often have sex with both your gfs and wives.

Yeah I wish the roomettes were cheaper, I'd take the train everywhere if they were. Apparently if you book a normal seat you can put yourself into a lottery somehow to get upgraded to a roomette day of trip but that's a big risk if you don't get one.

I can usually get a sleeper for $100 more than basic economy Amtrak ticket when the train isn't crowded, which is about what it costs to fly economy anywhere. That's a way better deal. Last time I took Amtrak though, there was some kind of "issue" that took a whole coach out of service and Amtrak said they couldn't do anything about it. People either had to change their reservation to a sleeper or be left standing in coach, if not outright cancel their trip. I was not about to do that so I paid $300 to secure the sleeper first.

And you know what? The sleeper was about 30 minutes delayed out of our station, which was okay. It took the staff about 2 hours to serve dinner, which was absolutely not okay. And at our second stop, we were delayed for 4 hours about 30 minutes away from the city center. Instead of getting in at midnight, I was able to hail an Uber at 4:30 AM to be driven 30 minutes to my home.

The sleeper made it tolerable, but this being the second time in a row where there were huge delays means I will never trust Amtrak as a coach passenger.

Does Amtrak force you to sit with strangers at meal times like VIA Rail does? I always thought that's rude.
