Why does China has so few Railway stations?
In total China Railways services around 5500 stations across the entire country, while only 3300 of which provides any passenger service, this include High-Speed stations.
SNCF operates around 3000 stations and DB operates around 5600. Both of which are much smaller in scale.

A huge percentage of China's rail network is greenfield construction from the last 50 years where there's very deliberate planning on where to put stations, while France's network is about as old as it gets and a lot of stations date from a time when every town the tracks passed through got a station because it was so integral to transportation at the time it was worth doing. In France you'll have stations like Nice-Riquier which no modern transit planner would ever think of building but cannot realistically be removed without enormous backlash.

because chinks think there are only two types of passenger rail: intercity HSR and urban metro
    >>
    >>2081255
Because putting a station in every backwater town means your service becomes worthless.
    >>
    >>2081282
as oppose to putting a HSR station in the middle of no where?
    >>
they probably want to try and make the railway economically viable after pumping so much money into it
    >>
    >>2081281
    Refute them.

its a horrible system when you consider the average Chinese "city" has a land area of a small to medium sized European country, and with no reliable public transport within it.

I remember in Shanghai (best city in China) you used to have to get the metro from the international airport to the domestic airport or the main train station which is at the opposite side of the city and this took nearly 2 hours, but they have a dedicated rail connection now (which I think uses the subway lines) to cut the journey to 40 minutes
So I think they are starting to realise this

shanghai is developing a commuter rail network, jinshan railway + airport link with much more to come. don't think other cities are following along, just more and more metro (chinese edition, so a bit broader of a definition). shanghai also has a new tram, weird people mover lines, the crumbling maglev, and trolleybuses. i think pvg is getting an hsr line too. airport link isn't all that successful so they added intermediate stations but it sure beats line 2. too late now, but a true main intercity and hsr station in city center or just across the river at like century ave would be very nice..
    >>
    >>2081362
didn't they build the entire airport connector underground? how are they adding more stations?
    >>

i've been to nice and i have ridden the tgv in that area, i dont see why huge cities shouldnt have more than one station
whats the point of having faster trains if you still have to commute more than an hour to get to the other side of the town
    >>
If you look at some of the older railway lines in China, especially the railway network built by the Japanese in Manchuria, majority of the stations outside of any major city has been closed.

Nice-Riquier is less than a mile and a half from Nice-Ville. You can WALK between the two in less than 40 minutes, or take the tram in 20. No one would have built that station today if it didn't exist. It takes less than 2 minutes for the TER to move between the two, so I guess it's "convenient", but it's not something anyone would design on purpose.
    >>
    >>2081593
the general policy is for conventional lines to be as much as possible freight-only, as far as i can tell
    >>
    >>2082324
do you want to ride a metro train for two hours? used to require a transfer too since line 2 operated in two sections. and all these enluggaged people going to onward points via hsr or sha clog up the busiest metro line through the city core
    >>
    >>2081255
they know that trains are the most efficient when they go at a steady speed, and waste energy when they stop and accelerate
ergo, less stations is more efficient
the most power efficient train possible is a train on a loop line with no stops
    >>
    >>2082329
thats not efficient at all since it would move nothing. Locomotion-style point-to-point routes would probably be best.
    >>
You can land in Beijing and try to make your way to the Great wall, some locations despite being served by the oldest railway in China, no longer has any passenger services today despite being in prime locations to service local towns and tourists. Of course I think some places they built some new HSRs to replace the old lines.
