What would be the impact of just banning cars from the roads every Sunday, and letting people freely ride their bikes, walk down the roads, letting children play in the street?
Emergency vehicles would be exempt obviously.
I am not really anti-car, but surely 6/7 days of cars completely dominating the streets is enough?
    >>
    >>2080538
Why would emergency vehicles be exempt

Fuck bike lanes fuck some imaginary no car day

From "the roads", what roads would you want to close? A major thoroughfare? A side street downtown? How would you account for people who live or work in the area? What would be the alternative route?

    this.
    /thread
    >>

It would be all roads ideally
People would be able to walk, cycle or take the train to get to places
For those people who insist they "need" car to buy groceries etc. and refuse to walk, they would be able to do that on any of the other 6 days a week
I think Sunday should be a day of rest and recovery and ideally most people would not be working, but there are some jobs like hospital staff and utility workers that would obviously need to keep working so perhaps only enforcing car-free roads between 9am-5pm between commuting hours would have to be the compromise

The benefits would be that everyone gets a day without pollution and road noise, children can go out and play in the street, you are free to walk or cycle wherever you like without worrying about cars, people can host dinner parties and community events in the street. People would also get healthier as they would need to walk or cycle places, and mental health would improve as people would get out and meet with their neighbours more, children from the street could play together.
    >>
    >>2080565
    >only enforcing car-free roads between 9am-5pm between commuting hours would have to be the compromise
You wouldn't be able to enforce it anyway, the city's just too big and there's not enough police. Limited events because they can assign an officer to a handful of blocks. Reality would be is it wouldn't work at all.
    >would be extremely unpopular in even progressive cities
    >would make working that day impossible for many people
    >lack of truck traffic would mean there's issues with supply on the rest of the week
    >it's not a "compromise" if the other side gets nothing, "less bullshit" isn't a compromise
    >>
    Long story short:
Wielding the states power to impose yourself onto others is no less degenerate than motoring.
    >>2080565
    >train
    Motorist detected
This thread is actually part of the motorist conspiracy
    >>
    >>2080570
If people were on board with the idea then it would just be socially enforced. Any car driving would immediately stand out, and there wouldn't really be anywhere you could drive anyway because all the roads would be full of people walking, cycling, or children playing.
There's currently not enough police to stop you from parking in front of people's driveways, driving down footpaths etc. but all of that is socially enforced.

    >the other side gets nothing
Well the "other side" gets 6/7 days to drive their cars and then a whole day where they can let their children freely play outside, where they can enjoy walking and riding their bikes, where they can connect with their neighbours.
I don't really think it's an us vs theme thing either. I am posting this as someone who drives a car, but I don't need to drive my car 7 days a week. I think "nobody speaks to their neighbours any more" and "kids don't play outside anymore" and "there's no space for me to safely ride my bike" are modern problems people actually care about whereas "working 6 days isn't enough, I wish I could work 7" probably isn't.
    >>
    >>2080575
    >Any car driving would immediately stand out, and there wouldn't really be anywhere you could drive anyway because all the roads would be full of people walking, cycling, or children playing.
Yeah, but even a lot of these "car-free days" don't last for long because the gimmick goes away after a while. "Social enforcement" would mean nothing if that's not the will of the people.
    >Well the "other side" gets
That's not what a compromise is. Let's say a mayor of absolute control took over your city and instituted a total ban on cycling. Obviously, there would be protests, and the mayor agrees that there should be one day a month when cycling is permitted. The mayor's office pats themselves on the back for making a "compromise". That's bullshit, but that's the same sort of "compromise" you're talking about here.
    >I think "nobody speaks to their neighbours any more" and "kids don't play outside anymore" and "there's no space for me to safely ride my bike" are modern problems people actually care about
I think that those problems run a lot deeper than just "cars did this". Why not just cut Internet or electricity? After all, even "Bowling Alone" put the blame on TV more than suburbanization.
    >I don't need to drive my car 7 days a week
Many people go to work five days, do errands on the weekend, and attend some sort of religious institution on the other day of the weekend.
    >"working 6 days isn't enough, I wish I could work 7" probably isn't.
People work on off days so that the world can function. Someone's going to have work Saturday for grocery shopping, someone's going to have to work holidays, someone's going to have to work nights.

We should just legalize hitting cyclists and driving over then crushing them into goo on some other days, the social discourse would improve a hundredfold.

I walk or take public transport the majority of the time but own a car just for when I need to drive over to one of my friends houses and public transit would either take twice or long or doesn't run late enough at night for me to get back.
A rather annoying part of car ownership (that nobody tells you until you buy one) is that the car battery slowly drains over time so you are forced to go for a drive once a week just to keep the car alive. It also needs to be a longish drive to charge the battery up enough, and short trips cause your engine and oil to build up condensation so you have to drive for long enough to get the engine up to a hot temperature as well, around 20 minutes.
I love having a car when I need it, but it is quite annoying that I only need to use it once or twice a month but am basically forced to put it on the road for half an hour each week.

    Use a battery tender.

I pay taxes to pave the roads so I'm going to use them whenever the fuck I feel like it, if you want to be car free go to a park and let your kids run/bike around it.

Have to agree with this. Imagine trying to go for a ride, maintain 16mph average for a good workout. But everywhere you go, both sides of the road are clogged full of other cyclists who never rode a bike in 10+ years and go no faster than jogging speed, and people road raging like always.
    >>
    >>2080538
honestly with modern electric assist bikes the lines are so blurry that unless you made it truly pedestrian only, people would cheat. and with modern cities, aint nobody wanna walk 25km to the parkade just to walk around some more because its a defacto holiday and all the places to actually hang out are packed
