How freaking cool would it be if Jamaica still had a passenger railroad? It would make sense too because it would improve access to the interior, reduce traffic, and its safer than those winding mountain roads. If you look on youtube you can see that they tried to revive it during Covid as a school bus but failed

A lot of these interoceanic railroads would have been a game changer for these central american nations if they survived to this point since the Panama canal is so packed. Mexico's original 1850s Veracruz-Acapulco line was never finished. Acapulco was never connected to rail despite how important is was

There's also the famous Key System, the Pacific Electric system, and a lot of other more obscure streetcar systems in California like the Eureka streetcar, original Sacramento PG&E streetcar, the Bakersfield streetcar. It was all the rage for towns to construct streetcars in the mid 1800s

The Key System is probably one of the less obscure ones, since it survived into the 50s and was quite remarkable with its bridge railway starting in 1939.

I find many of the interurbans quite fascinating as obscure railways, they were also usually much more impressive in scope than some random small town tram. The Sacramento Northern, which interoperated onto Key System tracks and even used the bridge railway for only like its last year of operation was really something, running all the way from San Francisco to Sacramento and on to Chico, crossing Suisun bay on a small rail ferry and using three different electrifications on the way, overhead pantograph on the Key System, trolley pole from Oakland to Sacramento, and third rail from Sacramento to Chico.

It even had observation cars in its heyday!

it's true anon. The weirder and shittier the roadbed/loading gauge the better

Picrel is the Roma-Pantano railway, a weird narrow-gauge tramway/metro line that crosses at grade with the standard gauge city tram network but is weirder in every way. It has its own semi-hidden street platforms at Roma Termini and gets pretty far out away from the city. Sounds like it'll be closing and replaced with the new Metro C line which is normal and boring as shit and a massive shame.

    >a narrow-gauge street running tram-train railway
Man, it's like something that was tailor-made to attract /n/tists. The earlier rolling stock even had a luggage compartment.

It was just a European-style interurban, which were usually narrow-gauge and often ran roadside outside of cities. There's a bunch of such railways still operating in Switzerland like pic related in the Appenzell region. In Zurich they actually have an interurban line which uses the normal tram tracks within the city and then gets onto its own ROW. It even skips some minor stops on the urban portion.

Post your local obscure closed railway line!

nobody knows about the super obscure third rail interurban that used to run in marin county with steam trains running all the way up to Eureka. we have SMART now but its diesel. Pretty cool seeing all the abandoned rail bridges in humboldt county along the eel river

Yeh, I've read a lot about those trams there. I lived in Mexico City for a while so it was interesting to read about its tram history. Until a few years ago there were quite a few streets there with tram tracks left, by now it's gotten less but you might still find a few.

Interesting tidbit about Mexico City trams: pic related, this one PCC that was face lifted with larger windows and twin headlights. Only one was made, probably because at the time it was decided to shut down the remaining tram lines.
