In general I prefer older road bikes with rim brakes, exposed cables, mechanical shifting, tubes, weight > aero etc. The modern disk brake bikes just don’t make sense to me. I don’t hate them, if I lose my rim brake bikes and can’t purchase another or parts for my bikes, I won’t stop riding, I will buy a modern bike. But I have never ridden a modern bike. I can’t rent it here and I have no friends with one to borrow. So, sometimes I wonder - are they really that bad as the rim brake enthusiasts make them to be? I mean, majority of the bike riders out there are on modern bikes and they do not complain, they seem happy with their bikes, so bad could they be? So if somebody who has ridden a lot both - which is really the better option and is there even a better option or both are just fine?
I do ride XC MTB as well and my MTB is with disk brakes, tubeless, electronic shifting. So, I am familiar with the technology, I like it on my MTB (minus the e-shifting, but that’s how the bike came), but I still think these are not right for the road. But since I haven’t tried, I don’t know. So, am I right it my assumptions or am I missing out and people that are bashing the modern bikes are just contrarians?
    >>
Disk brakes are necessary on MTBs. They're completely overkill on everything else. There is just not enough force or momentum to warrant them, yet you are burdened with all the downsides that come along with them. Most people out there are technically inept and will.never be able to maintain them at home either.

Electronic parts on bicycles are always a meme and should be abolished.
    >>
    Have both
    Like both
Do you fucking faggots really just read people’s opinions online and worry about what the internet thinks

Just test ride a bike with disc at a bike shop if you want to try one

    >>2080464
What exactly are the disadvantages of disc?
Rim brakes work well enough on my bikes that have them, but I have never owned a disc brake bike and thought "damn I really wish this had rim brakes instead". My experience with rim brakes stopping power is worse, they need more adjustment, they squeak, the braking surface gets dirty much easier. The brake feel is also worse than hydraulic disc. You have to disconnect the brakes in order to take the wheel off.
I don't *mind* rim brakes but to me they're just subtly worse in every single way, I want to know what you think the disadvantages of disc are.
    >>
    >>2080545
The disadvantage of disc brake is that they're not rim brakes. People crying about "you don't need good braking" was mildly amusing in 2012 when disc brakes were an obscure niche product but at this point anyone clinging to rim brakes is just being a douchenozzle for the sake of being a douchenozzle, no different from the "muh amsterdam" people who hate nice things because hating nice things is their entire identity
    >>
    >>2080465
    this

the conversation has become totally deranged because instead of being a legitimate discourse it's just normies vs luddites. disc brakes are pretty good, there are downsides. rim brakes were pretty good, there were downsides.

I don't have brakes on my bike at all. Had two as a kid, one on the front most of my adult life and now zero and never felt better, I won't look back. Also no disposable crap to buy over and over again and waste money on

I prefer rim brakes but I don't ride in mud and I have very strong grip strength. If my hands were weak I might prefer disc brakes. Maybe when I am 90 years old, but I doubt it, they say grip strength is the last thing to go and usually you just die before it's lost

How come motorcycles never though to use big clamps to clamp the wheel to stop? Why did they use drum brakes and later disk brakes? Are they stupi

You are 100% correct and everyone disagreeing with you has no real experience with cycling. They are just coping posers. Ignore them and continue to enjoy rim brakes like any free thinking person with real world experience would
    >>
    >>2080545
    >What exactly are the disadvantages of disc?
Disc brakes create intense force on one side of the wheel. This requires a massively overbuilt fork to compensate for, which ruins the ride feel. Get an old steel road bike and give it a try to understand what you've lost.

Then ride a full fender disc bike in the rain. After you've lost your hearing from the deafening squealing, ride home and check out the shit in your disc brake pads. Then ask yourself if this is really better than just riding with some caution in the rain.

I have more miles on vintage steel than you'll clock up in your life and I'm not going back to rim brakes ever. ever. I don't blame you for clinging to that past but you do need to recognize that is what you are doing and stop expecting other people to do the same.
    >>
    >>2081785
same, i only ride oldass bikes and discs are just straight up superior

the only reason they didnt catch on is because cyclists are retarded and will literally try to bring in Roller Delayed Blowback to braking before admitting that anything cars or motorcycles use is there for a reason. even cable actuated disc brakes are massively superior but retards will still use fucking coaster brakes just to be contrarian

Are direct mount rim brakes the best we have right now? I know that SRAM made a hydraulic one but it ended before it even began. Is there one that has clearance up to 35mm?

What about short pull rim brakes? Cantilevers are too finicky for me to adjust. Mini v-brakes are kinda meh.

Magura sometimes makes hydraulic calipers, they probably scrape 25 mm tires.

    >>
    >>2081930
Yes. It is PEAK and BASED and the only way to stop a bike effectively.
    >>
    >>2081930
Lots of road brakes that fit 35mm+. google wide clearance long reach brake. off the top of my head, at one point shimano made one and tektro definitely makes them still. Single pivot vintage Shimano thru bolt 600 road brakes will clear up to 37mm. And like the other dude said, cantilevers will fit as big as your frame allows.

I think rim brake just looks better.. nothing better than a super clean vintage hub without all that bulky bullshit on it

Its kinda funny because rim brake is functionally a disc rotor brake. There's the benefits of heat dissipation, modern pad compounds are pretty damn nice, and i really like the modulation especially on single pivot road brakes.

People dont like them because they're not easy to set up. A lot of the hate they get is bc tards cannot set them up, rush the process, use shitty old pads, and they suck
    >>
    >>2081814
disc brakes are bad because they stutter and get stuck so you fly over the bars. rim brakes are so simple and just work and quality pads won’t fail from wet.. discs will scream if even a drop falls on them

i changed my rim brake pads YESTERDAY and the braking performance is still bad. the only reason i wont get discs is because my bike does not have HOLES for them so instead i will just crash into a grandma whomst is high on crack

id say they are necessary for touring bikes, and e bikes.
rim brake pads and wheel rims wear out too quickly, pritty much for light duty fair weather use only.
    >>2080555
higher mechanical advantage means less pad clearance.
also for some reason disk brake pads are like derailleur hangers, no two are alike. (avid bb5 or shimano B05S is near as you get to being common)

so do your legs by driving it from the opposite side. if your brakes are creating so much twisting force that the hub shears under the load of braking, i wanna know what fucking tires you're running

This. I recently bought a bike with mech dicks on it and the first time I used the breaks the hub twisted so bad the spokes all went right through the rim tape and deflated my tires instantly. The sealant didn't even have time to do its job.
    >>

I have had bad experience with disc brakes (unable to get the squeak out of them). I never had bad experience with vee brakes. Caliper brakes just weak though, I'm old enough remember the improvement with the conversion to vee brakes which was significant maybe it contributes to why people like them.
    >>
    >>2080545
They are heavier and the fork needs to be stiffer so they don't ride as nice that's partly why everyone has 30+mm tires now
