That is a cheap elongation of the useful length of the table. You can place a newspaper on it so it doesn't fold at the bottom or a laptop computer (lower end of the base on the metal pipe, upper end on the table) and use the space behind it.

sometimes i lean on those doors on my commute and fantasize about one of them breaking and sucking me out and the train turning me into a gnarly mess of flesh and blood

i knew someone who joined DB as a conductor then one hot summer day on the job she probably passed out on the platform, slipping between the platform and the train as it started to roll, immediately and gruesomely killing her. she left her husband and a then 7yo kid. sad way to go.
    >>
you might laugh at the video in OP, but it took me a while to find out that you pull the table towards you in the ICE 4 trains.
In other news, if you want to buy your own ICE, DB is selling their BR406 train sets. a couple of them still have the logo of the Nederlandse Spoorwegen on them, even after they sold them to DB. I just saw one in Frankfurt today on its way to the Ruhrpott joined with a normal ICE 3 BR403. I like the OG black info screens that they still have.
    >>
Took the train to Germany last weekend. On the way there it was an SBB GmbH service, but it was crowded like a sardine can. Awful.

On the way back it was a DB train. Really dirty inside and outside. Aren't german trains ever cleaned?

    The end.
    >>

    >>
    >>2036237
it's the international version of the original ICE 3 with multisystem capabilities. they ran on the Frankfurt - Amsterdam and Frankfurt - Brussels lines and originally to Paris as well.
the constant switching between different current systems wore down the electrical components and made the BR406 really unreliable.

I have seen that happen on RRX once or twice, but it's really not a common occurrence, that they do that.
At the moment there is ZERO reason to schwarzfahren in Germany.
You WILL get caught at least once a month and have paid more than the regular fare with that.
The monthly chunk of social security earmarked for mobility is higher than the price of a D-ticket.
Anyone, that at this point intentionally skips the fare is pure evil. Take them to court!
    >>
    >>2036637
    >Take them to court!
At this point in Germany the court case would either be simply dismissed or the poor hard working skilled workers would get a D-Ticket for a year for free to be able to go after their legitimate business. Also the ticket controller who caught them would get a 1500€ fine and a year in prison for racism.

Wonder how they will do with 3 Girunos running a schedule for 3 trains without any reserve. And they can't dig up a spare 1144+Cityshuttle somewhere, like ÖBB did so far.

    >>2037357
I hated beta testing the Giruni as passenger, but they seem to run reliably now. they could ask SBB to lease a train, but on the other hand SBB and ÖBB are working together as state owned operators.
makes me wonder if they keep the trains when the Semmeringtunnel opens. they could do cross-border services like Vienna - Venice or Vienna - Munich - Zürich/Frankfurt.

Hamburg has an (underdimensioned) ring line with the U3, but no tram. we'd have first class transit with a larger ring line and a tram network. but for now, Berlin has Munich & Hamburg beat despite being the poorest of the three cities

this is just official now, in reality the majority of these trains arrived late in Basel and ended there. that was my experience when I used the EC 8 all the way from Hamburg in the panorama coach. a couple of weeks ago on a Saturday I caught the EC 6 within Switzerland. as it arrived late, it was used on the IC6 service and continued to Domodossola, Italy instead of Interlaken. the train itself arrived really dirty as it transported lots of football fans earlier (the train goes via Münster-Dortmund-Düsseldorf-Köln, go figure). all that wasted Flaschenpfand on the beer bottles, one could buy another train ticket.
I can't count how many times my ICE ended prematurely in Basel Badischer Bahnhof instead of Basel SBB, which really sucks in the evening, when you want to catch one of the remaining trains to the rest of Switzerland.

In other news: If railways don't start upping their autonomous driving game, freight rail is fucked.
    >>>/wsg/5873181
And autonomous street-bound automobiles could also cause damage for passenger rail, if they aren't properly integrated in a multi-modal mobility-as-a-service solution.
    >>
    >>2040443
    >autonomous street-bound automobiles could also cause damage for passenger rail
not gonna happen, as their throughput is simply too low. they aren't scalable to the same degree as rail is.
metro and suburban rail networks will become automated first. already planned for the Hamburg S-Bahn and new metro line U5. tho autonomous minibusses are also in the works, but only to increase coverage for low density areas underserved by regular busses
    >>
    >>2040470
    >they aren't scalable to the same degree as rail is.
Tesla is putting a lot of effort into it to make it scale. (Including autonomous Tesla-busses.)
Tesla owners will be able to rent-out their cars as taxis through a maker-operated platform. Self-driving obviously helps a lot with this.
The optimum would obviously be to have on-demand vehicles for the last-mile to and from the closest station to offer an integrated solution at scale.
If public transit operators don't start putting some effort into that, (US) car makers will make them redundant. And German car makers' future is also not looking too bright, considering this.
Look at >>2040443. That's not a closely controlled experiment, but regular operation on public roads. The future is already here and it won't wait for us, if we don't get up to speed.

What are the "best" railway museums in Germany?
    >>
    >>2040782
DB museum in Nürnberg is OK. not that much in terms of rolling stock, but the history is well documented with rail related items. I haven't been to the one in Koblenz, I think they have some older stuff and have some summer festival with lot of opportunities for hobby photographs.
French national railway museum is in Mulhouse and can easily be reached from Freiburg or Basel, they have lots of space and tons of rolling stock on display.
    >>
    >>2040782
The Technikmuseum in Berlin has a pretty nice exhibit of locomotives housed in some old roundhouses which originally belonged to the Anhalter Bahnhof (once the biggest train station in the city). They've also got large exhibits on ships and planes, if your /n/-tism swings that way.

The 500+ billion of new debt will probably mostly be used to finance shit from the regular budget, so more bullshit spending on SPD justice projects can happen without getting in conflict with Schuldenbremse.

Austria might be calling it an Interregio, but it's no Interregio.

I've been thinking of applying for a job at SBB Cargo as a B100 or B driver, when they open up new positions near me (most likely Olten)
How bad is the situation there? i heard they are closing a lot of stations in Ticino and eastern switzerland

And there is also an opening in a local railway near me, but i feel like that might get old fast since they have a very limited network.

    What should I do?
    >>
    >>2057677
idk I applied various times before the coof and never got a reply. Eventually I just got myself a different job. If they don't have enough people at any time it's def their own fault.

That said, if I had the choice I'd drive freight trains rather than passengers. Dunno why seems more chill and comfy. Probably more shunting and waiting at red lights rather than zooming down the line pressured to keep the schedule.

That is my thought as well. also i can't stress how short that local line is. it's only a bit over 30km of tracks, mostly single lane. and i fear that it will get old really fast, unlike shunting/ freight trains where you have a bit more varietey and have to get out to couple and and uncouple cars
also SBB Cargos heavy shunters look cool as fuck

Stadler are really sore losers about this decision, it's embarassing.
    >Italian private high speed operator italo announced that their plans to enter the German market are in an advanced stage
Didn't have them on the radar. Italian state railways FS/trenitalia announced earlier that they want to enter the German high speed rail market, they already run several regional lines with their Netinera company (e.g Alex in Bavaria). It will be a complicated relationship with DB as they work together on the planned Berlin - Naples train.
And besides I wonder how InfraGO can fit more trains on the German rails with flixtrain having new trains on order as well.

    >And besides I wonder how InfraGO can fit more trains on the German rails with flixtrain having new trains on order as well.
DB Fernverkehr trains and some local services will need to get cut or moved for those.
Flixtrain plans additional international services on a cyclic schedule, which have a higher priority than domestic services by default.

Look, Germany is probably the only EU-state in which nothing would change, if it left the EU.
The EU is Germany and Germany is the EU.
It's but a cheap excuse for politicians in Berlin to say "We have no choice, because Brussels has decided this." when they have their people against themselves.

The crux of the matter is with DBAG and the politicians and parties presiding over it: The Konzern has been mismanaged from its inception at practically every single layer.

need to travel from Basel to Frankfurt on a Saturday in spring and was toying around the DB Navigator for a bit if I could find some cheapo ICE ticket, because trying to do this with regional trains is a chore in the upper Rhine valley, with lots of changes and waiting times.
while there are plenty of tickets for 18 Euros for Munich - Frankfurt, there were none below 30 Euros for Basel Bad to Frankfurt if you discount Flixtrain (I saw the Fl*xtrain stopping once in Eisenach and the people inside looked all miserable, so no thanks). even when trying some tricks like starting from Freiburg or adding Bad Krozingen as waypoint, that didn't work. all I could find was a 9 Euro ticket to Karlsruhe that would only show up if you added the the waypoint of Müllheim and 6 Euro tickets from Mannheim to Frankfurt for the TGV.
then I connected the only cheap ICE train Basel to Karlsruhe that continues to Stuttgart and the cheap Munich - Frankfurt trains that run via Heidelberg-Darmstadt together and voila, I found a through ticket Basel Bad - Frankfurt via Stuttgart for 18 Euros (it's 13 Euros in the end for me with BC25). It has a 100 minute layover in Stuttgart and will take 6 instead of 3 hours. I'm pretty sure that the connecting ICE Graz - Frankfurt will be on time in Stuttgart and that I won't simply get a Zugbindung aufgehoben.
you're welcome miss nigkutta. and yes I know, I could have simply waited for the black friday sale.

Kind of surprised this hasn't been mentioned here yet, but DB recently (a few weeks ago) started large scale scrapping of their retired class 145 fleet, independently of who they were running for last (DB, RBH, MEG) and their last revision. Some comments on DSO suggested there were some serious interests in these units, but despite the high bids DB is presumably trying to get rid of them rather soonish to not give them into the hands of more 3rd parties than necessary. It's not confirmed though as some units were indeed sold to mainly train rental companies like TRI and WFL, but surely not in the numbers you would expect considering these machines are less than 30 years old still. Either way a remarkable move (for the wrong reasons) as this is going to be the first TRAXX generation to disappear.

    >>
    >>2083016
Well, it actually goes much deeper if we look at what's been happening inside DB, just to give a context where we are right now

    >DB Cargo has been in the red since 2015 and making losses with their operative business
    >DB AG holding got in trouble with the EU due to state funded subventions to support their loss making branches, including DB Cargo
    >Holding is not allowed to freely counterfinance longterm loss-making branches with profits from other areas and subventions anymore
    >EU is giving DB AG the ultimatum of roughly 2 years until end of 2026 to restructure DB Cargo, company needs to proof it can operate with profit again or else may get folded
    >DB Cargo is scrambling for solutions as shits hits the fan
    >Multiple restructuring plans are made public, including massive cuts of employees
    >Suits in finance do their thing and try to get rid of dead assets and save money where possible
    >DB Cargo starts getting rid of rolling stock, starts scrapping older or unused freight cars in large quantities
    >Locomotives are sold where it's profitable, their age doesn't matter, so even brand new class 193 vectrons are sold to lessors like Railpool, other examples being traxx class 185 and 077 (class 77)

    Cont.
    >>
    >>2083022
    Now to the 145s

    >First traxx series directly developed out of the ancient 12X prototype
    >Single current only (15kV AC, 16,7Hz), top speed of 140kph, offers the usual benefits of tri-phase current locomotives
    >Is now close to 25 to 30 years old though
    >One of the weakest variants of the earlier traxx family with just 4200 kW of power (compared to later European standard variants with 5600 kW)
    >Profitable freight services are mainly in long distance cross-border services requiring multi-current tracion
    >Can't be power upgraded like the older class 185 units as major structural changes and in electronic will require re-certification which is near impossible
    >Usable in Germany only, legally not even Austria or Switzerland
    >Due for midlife overhaul in order to keep them reliable which costs a shitton of money and effort
    >DB Cargo suddenly decided in 2024 to stop and ban the use of class 145s internally, defacto phasing out all of them from one day to another
    >Few units were still rented out for some weeks, but services eventually stopped there as well

    >Fast forward to current situation as described before
    >Deadline is getting closer to proof you can stay afloat as a business without sucking up all the tax money
    >3rd parties are lining up to get a hand on these still good to use locomotives
    >Few units change owners but mainly to rental companies specialized in for-hire passenger services
    >DB Cargo is now (probably) in the situation to either get rid of some of these locos for good money, but actively supporting its direct competitors and likely hurting their own struggling business or to send them for scrapping which results in less shortterm one-time net returns, but removes threats from the market
    >DB Cargo decides for the latter and sends them in batches to the butcher, not even bothering with potentially removing reusable spares

I guess in the end it's just a suit's decision and lack of will + imagination which lead to this mess

Tender for Rhein-Ruhr-Express (RRX) B Netz has been closed. Winner of lot 1 for lines RE 2, 3 and 45 is DB Regio who will order 34 new 4-car Hitachi Eurocaravaggio EMUs. Lot 2 of this same tender goes to Westfalenbahn who will order 16 new 6-car Stadler KISS MIX units for lines RE 7 and RE 42.

Although it is just the tender for the additional secondary lines supporting the RRX main network, I am still quite surprised all involved parties agreed on the winning companies handling ordering rolling stock on their own and taking care of maintenance. And no less is the decision made by DB Regio to go (again) for a model with no real reference yet a mindbaffling one. The Italian production plant may belong to Hitachi Rail now, the history under their old firm AnsaldoBreda however certainly isn't one that helps building trust. And additionally, if they are anything to go by, the Hitachi Caravaggio (without Euro) units already operating in Italy are not exactly known as mindfully designed quality products. Fewer windows than equivalent products of other manufacturers, only one stair leading to the upper deck of each end car and sliding single doors. Westfalenbahn certainly did a safer call here relying on Stadler, although the chosen sets are first of their kind in Germany as well, similar ones though are already running in Spain.

The contracts will only start in the early 2030s leaving about 5-6 years for production, testing and certification. However with Hitachi having no reference products in Germany yet or any experience in certification processes in Germany, this could bring back some bad memories made with PESA and their Link DMUs or SKODA with their MüNüEx double deck push-pull sets.

Certainly an interesting development made here.

Pic may or may not be related, a Caravaggio EMU operating in Northern Italy.
