I've loved this little pony for the longest time now. To this day, she still makes my heart skip a beat just thinking of her. I really like thinking about brushing Flutter's mane and imagining how soft it would be.

I love her so much, sometimes I feel as though many people just don't understand the qualities she brings.

I think some people get caught up in the loud and flashy and overt natures of other characters, and that might make those ponies easier to love, since there might be more there to see and work with and relate to perhaps, but Fluttershy, to me at least, is subtle and easy to lose grasp of, something precious. Like a pleasant breeze on a still day, or a flitter of sunlight through the canopy of leaves, she is beauty itself, not just attractive beauty, but virtuous beauty, but due to the purity of her nature, it doesn't last when looked at too closely, since the act of looking at it effects it.
Imagine watching the most elegantly designed snowflake drift past your face, and for a moment you can grasp its beauty, but as soon as it comes, your warm breath melts it and it's gone.

I see Fluttershy everywhere I look. In the soft murmurs of my sleeping cats as they nap on my bed. In the sunlight filtering in through my window in the evening, casting long picturesque shadows across my room. In the first breath I take as I step outside to begin my day. In the quiet melodies of my favorite songs. To me, she is all that beauty is, and all that beauty is, is her.

She's the warm cup of coffee a coworker gifts you when they see you're tired, the soft smiles of your loved ones, the warm blanket waiting for you after a cold day.
Everything calm and caring and kind in this world is like a small part of her I can actually experience. She truly is wonderful.

Sorry if this is schizo, I'm just putting my feelings out there. I'd like to hear how everyone else feels about her. I'm sure we all love her for many of the same reasons, but also different ones.

In my opinion, they butchered it.
I don't wanna doompost but honestly I just gotta say it as it is.
I honestly believe only Faust knew how to write a character as complex as Fluttershy. When her creative input left the show, the writers basically just used her either as a punching bag or as a tool for showing that "oh actually being nice is good sometimes". Like, S1 Flutters was not some stupid doormat that many people see her as in say S8 or 9, or even earlier. She was moreso just socially unaware, as opposed to freaked out wreck, in my opinion. She would be sort of just out of the loop of normal social interaction because she spent most of her time alone and with animals. It's not that she was super terrified of talking to ponies, she just didn't really know how to. Like with her first interaction with Twilight in Ep1, she wasn't quivering or running away, she just didn't have the social skills to speak up or introduce herself properly. She even expressed extroverted behavior as soon as she saw Spike. If that same interaction were written in S8, she would just be a quivering mess who somepony would have to literally push toward Twilight. It's an absolute tragedy that she was devolved to the "nervous wreck shut-in" stereotype many shy characters are forced into.

Faust saw a unique opportunity in Fluttershy to express the gentle, nurturing, soft side of femininity. She was graceful, soft-spoken, caring, considerate, almost motherly in everything she did. She was very shy, of course, many times to her detriment, but it was always remedied by the support of her friends.

The later writers had no clue how to write her, they probably wouldn't even have included her if they had to come up with the characters on their own. They forced her into a constant cycle of "learning to be assertive". They saw the "powerful and imposing" personalities of the "stronger" ponies and decided we needed another mary sue.

In my opinion, Fluttershy doesn't need to learn to be assertive at all, she just needs to trust in her friends to be there for her, just like they should trust her to keep their sometimes arrogant personalities in check. Not every character needs to be strong on their own, that's one of the reasons why they have friends in the first place. They can depend on each other to counter their "faults".

Anyway, this is all just my retarded opinion, sorry for sperging.

I agree and want to add to this. In S1, a good deal of Fluttershy's conflicts were admittedly to do with learning to be more comfortable speaking up for herself, but she makes tons of real progress from FIM part 1 to the likes of Stare Master or Bird in the Hoof. S2 progresses things naturally from there, like having her learn not to swing too far in the other direction (Putting Your Hoof Down) or learning how to navigate being a weaker but valued member of a team (Hurricane Fluttershy). You can trace her developments back to her original character traits; Fluttershy's always been the main exemplar for "tough love" in the show in addition to sweet and gentle love. Your right that she's the most motherly of the M6, and that extends to a mother as an authority figure. I would disagree that Fluttershy never needed to learn to be assertive, but with the caveat that her "assertiveness" is rooted in self-confidence and self-acceptance without needing to be the loudest or toughest pony around. It's more of a lack of self-doubt that gives her courage.

It was only in S3+ that the writers stalled out with Fluttershy and didn't know where to take her next. I actually think she followed a similar pattern to many of the other M6 (e.g. Pinkie Pie) where her focus episodes portray her with sufficient nuance, but when she's a supporting character in another M6's episode, she gets flattened into the "timid crybaby". Then, that oversimplified characterization becomes what people think of when they think "Fluttershy", and the idea spreads until you lose what was originally there, even in her later focus episodes. The nervous wreck is a useful stock character for comedy, so a poor image of Fluttershy got shoved into episodes left and right until the original was lost.

I would love to spend time with Fluttershy's family.
When I daydream and stuff, I often times imagine visiting the Shy household.
Posey and Gentle Breeze seem like wonderful parents, and I like to think their real-world counterparts would be great people too.
And honestly, Zephyr isn't really that bad of a guy. I feel like I could have some good times with him, but that's just me.
I could spend great lengths of time with each of them, easily.
It's also something that makes me feel closer to Flutters. I think about her family and how she was raised and it's interesting to come up with stories that could explain why she is the way she is.
We know about the sonic rainboom and how that was a pivotal moment for Flutters, but how did her parents react to her getting her cutie mark from that, or if she told her parents about her bullying?
Anyway, I just love the whole Shy family

>Fluttershy raises her brows, then furrows them slightly

absolutely based take, and I couldn't agree more
It's stuff like this that I'd point to as to why this show, and by extension this board, is and should always be a Faust board, she understood these characters from the surface levels to the very depth in a way that a million modern writers of today couldn't fathom or scratch the surface of. Each of the mane six portrayed a trait of femininity that she knew would be what made the appeal of this show as every girl would be able to connect to one or more of them, and, in a way, I that that simple, unashamed presentation of the girly side of life is what made it appealing to both older and/or male audiences as well
In a sense, because of how each character embodied some trait of the feminine side of life, I think Fluttershy in the early seasons is the best character to look at, especially today, specifically because, if she were made today, she'd be slandered and bashed by modern media as an "offensive stereotype of women" or some other retarded string of buzzwords because of her soft-spoken, gentle nature and the fact that she embodies kindness. In today's world, something like "kindness" would be seen as a lesser virtue when compared to things like "loyalty" or "honesty" it would disregarded as shallow trait to exemplify when it probably has as much, if not potentially more depth as a character trait to explore

get a few drinks in her and her hesitation and introversion goes out the window without losing any of the gentle charm we know and love
she'd answer questions with unabashed confidence but still in her quiet, soft voice, whether the answer itself, or its delivery, was appropriate or not
the regrets would start mounting in the morning
