    Welcome friends, ITT:
We make and share pony art, with absolutely no pressure to deliver anything that's technically good (besides having ponies in it, which makes it good by default)

Make something, share what you've done, and give feedback and motivation to help us all keep improving and creating!

This thread's focus is art, but beginner or low effort content of any kind is welcome here. If you do want to post about something else like music, gamedev, or crafts, though, just note that you may find better help and feedback posting it in the /create/ thread

Are you an experienced artist? Leave some tips, feedback, guides, or tutorials, they're well appreciated here!

    >>
    >>43643204
Small crit if you're open to it:
Something to keep in mind is that pony forelegs are positioned differently from arms. A horse's limbs sit directly underneath, so that they can better support the body, which means they're going to be more "forward" and not really to the sides.

I hate to tell you, bud, but each step of refining a drawing requires more skill and makes it look worse if you don't know what you're doing. Lineart drawn over a sketch will look worse than the sketch unless you know exactly how to translate the personality of the sketch into solid lines, colouring in the lineart will show you where you made mistakes in the lineart, and shading the colours is a whole new dimension of opportunities to fuck up. Each step is a new skill you have to learn.

Here's a drawing I did a billion zillion years ago, to demonstrate. Pay special attention to how bad the seapony's curls turned out compared, and how flat and awkward her shading looks. This is after an embarrassing number of hours trying to get it right.
    >>
    >>43639086
    >>43639478
    >>43643540
Forget about the shading for a while. Your drawings look bad because you're doing it all wrong. Grab your pen, decide where you line's gonna start and where it's gonna end, then draw it in one smooth, quick stroke. Singular, confident strokes is the key, yours are too slow, that's why your lineart's all wobbly.

Your proportions aren't wrong, so there's nothing wrong with your eyes or your sense of scale. Practise smooth strokes first, and if you're not satisfied with what you produce after that, copy someone you do like, and if you can't copy it exactly, think long and hard about why yours looks wrong. Figure it out with your brain, don't just draw aimlessly, or you'll only learn bad habits.
    >>
    >>43643241
It will kill me to do so, but I will try to practice-draw the pony shoulder-joints to be more accurate.
It's just *so* visually convenient to put the "shoulders" on the sides in certain poses. Maybe I just need to get more creative.

    >>
    >>43643646
I'm not saying you can't do it, just that it gets harder the more stuff you add. For half a year, your work is stellar, and it is of course always up to you to decide how much you want to challenge yourself and when. Congratulations on enjoying drawing, by the way, for me it's like pulling teeth.

    >>
    >>43641346
Another question I have is whether I need some kind of background or basic knowledge, or if just doing what you said would be enough
    >>
    >>43644791
As far as basic knowledge is concerned: for outlines you typically just want to use a slightly darker color than the base color for the pony you're drawing i like to make the face, duplicate it and make it white then erase oval holes in the face for eyes. That way i can make a different layer for each eye, move the eyes, change their size and create different eyebrows and cheek bulges for different facial expressions. It makes good practice drawing your pony going through each expression
    >>
    >>43644853
    >for outlines you typically just want to use a slightly darker color than the base color for the pony you're drawing
The problem with this is that you've gotta deal with shadows and highlights. I typically make the outlines substantially darker than the midtone color, dark enough that it still serves as an outline for the shadowed parts. (I DON'T usually use a darkened version of the shadow color itself, because that will usually be a different color from the coat. But sometimes I can. It just depends on the picture.)
    >>
    >>43644949
I feel Shadows and highlights are a bit more advanced for someone who is getting started. Hell, I've done very little beyond linework and coloring to create show style work. It's kinda up to the artist to see how they progress with shading when they decide they're ready to tackle more complex work

i'm a beginner and i made that shit trixie in the bottom right, and then a more skilled artist drew aj with a gun (in like 3 mins) because first some added AJ board as the first thing on the board (i added trixie as the second thing) so then I added some bullets being stopped by magic and imagined the board being like a battlefield of trixie vs aj with a wall/barbed wire diagonally and charging towards each other but was too lazy to draw it and also i suck

For a long time my only way to make something precise is to vector my sketchs, it works fine buuut I don't want it to be the "only" way to make decent stuff.

oh yeah and I could help on construction here, I don't like the pony body at all
    >>
    >>43652671 >>43652687
In my opinion the main culprit is the short neck and human pose that the shouldered forelegs give.

I drew a redline where I moved the whole chest down and thus elongated the neck, and made the forelegs start more to the bottom of the chest. I also bent the forelegs and gave them a bunch of horse joints.
This solution does however lower her pose, and takes away both the "Forelegs straight out" and "showing the WHOLE chest" thing you had going. It might also mean a more frugal view of the teats, because of the angle.
Those are all still possible to do, but then I'd have retained the "chest legs" and the long neck, which would move the head way up. Alternatively you could make her neck and head craned down towards you, which you'd have to signal through a very big face form the perspective foreshortening, as well as maybe some shadows hinting that there is a lot of bent down neck behind that big face.
Remembering pony anatomy and maybe drawing a small version of this pose in full profile might help you visualize what's going on.
Or something like that, I'm not terribly good at this either.
    >>
    >>43653030

I'm looking forward to it regardless but my nitpick would be that her waist is quite a bit too narrow. Ponies have round guts, you're losing the bean shape

It was my first time ever experimenting with drawing crotchboobs, I don't know whether to be proud of myself or ashamed, although maybe it doesn't count since they're not exposed
I feel like the pose might be a bit uncomfortable, I tried it myself and you 'can' but it's not good for lounging in, maybe even less so for ponies, I dunno, I also dunno how to really draw a twist, I was in a sheer panic to get 'something' done in time for the swimsuit round yet chose that precise moment to do something outside my comfort zone too

How do I actually draw things? I started having fun, but I find that I'm still just practicing instead of actually drawing things.
    >>
    >>43665397
You need an idea that you want to see become a reality, a specific pony, an interaction, a scene, something to test what you've been practicing.
Although I'm a little confused because practice does involve drawing things, poses, expressions, environments...

    >Although I'm a little confused because practice does involve drawing things, poses, expressions, environments...
    I'll provide an example:
Since Monday, I've been drawing Luna based off screenshots of that S2 episode. Sometimes, they'll be direct copies--angle, pose, and expression. Other times, there will be changes or elaborations--the full body, a different expression, and etc. The most I'll do is a full pony with a blank smile. No pictures because I've gotten into the habit of ripping up what I draw.
    >>
    >>43665738
Alright I getcha, you're learning how to draw Luna but you haven't worked out what to 'do' with her.
Also it disturbs me to hear you're destroying your practice work, unless you really have no way to store it.

that's a very good guide, why is it not in the OP which has so many dogshit outdated guides it hurts?
    >oh here's a wall of reference images
    >oh here's a poorly formatted and dead google doc "guide" which just waffles over everything and doesn't give you a start point (seems to be gone from the OP now?)
    >here's two edge case guides for skills a beginner doesn't need or have
    it's bucking over for newfags.

ah here's the google doc guide that's dogshit for beginnerfags to read.
    >opening advice is just random rambling
    >image after image of one-off guides, no sections to browse through
    >nothing for beginner artfags who have zero concepts to start off with, immediately bombarded by a bunch of theory that they shouldn't give a shit about (muh perspective, muh shading, muh construction, muh challenge yourself, muh interpolating, extrapolating, chickenscratch, line accuracy, etc.)
this guide is absolutely horrid and a new one needs to be made for people with zero reference, zero practice, and who want to just immediately start without worrying about 5000 concepts or "avoiding bad habits" that they haven't even formed yet because they don't draw like the meme "use your shoulder instead of your wrist" shit when most people draw on A4 paper or a drawing tablet where this doesn't really matter too much early on.

    >I suggest you start your drawing sessions by warming up. The way I do that is by doing gesture drawing (we will see what this is in the beginner figure drawing books). Usually for me that will be quick poses (generally on this website), between thirty seconds and a minute. I also like to draw a few basic forms, such as straight lines, curved lines, circles, ellipses, spheres, and boxes.
nevermind this guide is shit too, why are artfags so insufferable?
A beginner can't "gesture draw", a beginner does not know how to gesture draw, stop thinking a beginner can gesture draw from the start.
It feels like this is poison for newfags to take in, just like that shitty "drawabox" site and its retarded owner who can't render for shit.
