Mind if I share a small, inconsequential theory with you moonfriends?
I have a theory that Nightmare Night came to be when a folkloric interpretation of Nightmare Moon was syncretized with an older, pre-diarchal tradition that had Wendigos as its central figure rather than Nightmare Moon.
I think this because:
1. (Assuming Nightmare Night occurs around the same time our Halloween does, mid-to-late autumn) The time of year it takes place in is seemingly arbitrary for a holiday that has Luna as its point of origin. What would make more sense would be if it was either celebrated during the night of the Summer Sun Celebration so that it better parallels the myth; OR during Equestria's winter solstice, the time of year where the night's the longest, which would put it decently close to Hearth's Warming Day. It makes more sense that, like our Halloween, Nightmare Night began as a harvest festival and the reason why it takes place when it does is that it's the time of year immediately prior to winter.
2. Nightmare Moon's role in Nightmare Night itself. Where she serves as a sort of judge/apex predator. Offer her your candy or she eats you.
Unless Nightmare moon just straight-up ate a pony during her rebellion this is a WILD characterization to give her. Much less so for Wendigo. And while they also don't literally eat ponies the blizzards they conjure could be metaphorically described as "swallowing" ponies in the whiteout. That, and the most common time for ponies to disappear would be during winter, when they have the least amount of contact with eachother. Once again, making it easier to circulate stories that they were "eaten" by the wendigo.
The second part of this is the offerings. The harvest, or in the modern days, candy. While nightmare moon craves reverence and offering a portion of your harvest is very reverent it's also very non-descript and rings heavily of appeasement when what nightmare moon wants is probably closer to idolatry. If you want to keep Nightmare Moon pleased why offer food when burning an effigy of Celestia would probably net much better results? It makes more sense if food offerings are a hold-over from an earlier Wendigo tradition. Winter is a natural time for famine and famine is a natural time for conflict. Likely giving Wendigo a very strong cultural connection with hunger like they have in our world. It would make sense to offer them food in that context and the appeasement may even work considering that willfully destroying part of the food supply would only accelerate pony society towards a state of famine/conflict thus inadvertently pleasing them. And unlike Nightmare Moon Wendigo care very little about being seen as ultimately malevolent entities that need to be appeased.

This theory has a lot of strong bones but I'd quibble with some of the specifics. Somethings to note also are that the Nightmare Night we see is specifically in a mostly earth pony village, and that when Luna shows up she's being a good princess so the way she arrived is the way she was making contact with these kinds of villages 1000 years ago.

Nothing really gives the impression that Windigos operate on this level of negotiation. They seem to just keep pushing whenever they're able and retreat when conflict stops. Exacerbating conflict would make the Windigo problem worse, not better. Instead, it might be metaphorical trading relations that became literalized during unification while under Windigo attack. I'd suggest that it was an earth pony harvest festival that was originally about sending food to the other tribes before relations became strained, so something like:
>Pre-Unification
Earth ponies give up part of their harvest to the other tribes, driving away the storms (pegasi) and darkness (unicorns) and probably also protecting themselves from monsters. Could also be an origin for costumes as a way to make differences in tribal appearance less of a shock - if this is the only day that hornheads and birdbrains are in the village, everypony would be less tense if the first thing you notice when looking at a pony is not their race.
>Windigo Attack
Giving up their meager supply of food is part of what literally drives away the Windigos by ending the conflict between tribes. Depending on the role of the sisters during unification, Luna may also have been literally have been the one collecting the harvest.
>Before Nightmare Moon
All three tribes are definitely being ruled by the alicorns at this point. Luna showing up (the skies literally darkening when she does) and then giving up your harvest to her and the skies clearing is most likely something that happened at least once anyway, but there's no reason something extremely similar to modern Nightmare Night couldn't already be happening as a follow through from the above.
It'd be really funny and cute if Nightmare Moon was named after Nightmare Night/was Luna's Nightmare Night costume before it became her evilsona. That feels really in character for the kinds of jokes she makes too.
>After Nightmare Moon
The harvest festival is obviously still going to happen, so there's little reason not to reference a figure that was beloved but is now associated with fear during the spooky celebration. Over 1000 years ponies forget that she was a real pony and not just part of the celebration, which parallels Windigos that are a real thing that most ponies forgot were literally real but they still reference in Hearthswarming.

Second of all. It WOULD be really interesting if Nightmare Moon was conceptualized long before Luna ever became corrupted because it would imply that the alicorn actually gets some say in how their nightmare form manifests.
Hell, it would even give an actual, in-universe explanation for why Daybreaker looks like THAT (Nightmare Moon but on fire.) As her conception is rooted in the fears that Celestia would betray Luna or Twilight in the same way she perceived Luna betraying her. (If we ignore that Daybreaker only ever appeared in STARLIGHT'S nightmare). Whereas an older design like Nightmare Star is based in a different conception Celestia has of herself and her failings.

So it's more fitting for them to have ancient personal days on equinoxes than on solstices, to be at the points of moving away from the perfect balance rather than on the apex. Before Windigos: four generic agricultural quarter days.
After Windigos: three generic agricultural quarter days, winter taken up by celebrations of unity. (Alternatively, the events of the play weren't the first encounter and winter celebrations were about Windigo as far as history can see; every time ponies ceased to treat this myth seriously, they were attacked and the cycle started anew.)
Two sisters: spring is Celestia's and autumn is Luna's, both mixed up with older agricultural stuff. Winter is still anti-Windigo. Summer is either still generic or vacant.
One sister: summer is the new Celestia's day as she tries to counteract the entirety of cold and death on her own. Old spring celebration is carefully phased out and turned into the purely secular Winter Wrap Up as we know it. Old autumn celebration is left unattended because Celestia couldn't bring herself to do anything about it and slowly morphs into a parody of itself. Winter is, naturally, still winter.

Personally I don't see the issue, NMM is Luna at her worst and her redeemed self hates that truth but I don't see how liking (or siding) with her alter-ego is somehow wrong.
Considering that NMM was presented with the opportunity to kill Celestia but chose not to even after her banishment, tells me that she cannot bring herself to do it. She doesn't inflict cruelty onto others at random, the fact that NMM chose to imprison Celestia in the moon in her timeline is proof that revenge was never her primary motive. At that stage she either believed that being imprisoned in the moon was a fate worse than death or Celestia deserved the same punishment. Personally I think it was somewhat of a mix of both given that NMM, without prompting is quick to justify why she banished Celestia, claiming it was:

>"No less a fate she sentenced me to."

She did not owe Twilight an explanation, if she was plain evil then Celestia's banishment would have been proof enough of her power and she would enjoy that fact. The only reason why she would justify her actions is to convince herself that what she did was justice. A part of her I think does secretly regret that she lost Celestia again and in a twisted way, banishing her sister was a way to kill her without doing actually going through with it. She wants to be better than Celestia, it is her desire to rule and be loved by her subjects and prove to herself that she was never the lesser of the two sisters.
Though her rule, as rigid and harsh as it may be, cannot be called malicious. Equestria's prosperity and well-being is a reflection of her own self-worth and so NMM can be trusted to do whatever it takes to ensure the prosperity and well-being of Equestria.
Luna hates NMM because she fears what she might've done had she not been stopped and regrets the pain she put both her and Celestia through. Her actions as NMM show that she didn't need to afraid, because her own perception of the cruel tyrant who would've killed her sister is not who she is at her core.
Luna is NMM's biggest detractor but that ultimately means nothing. The same reasons why Luna is someone who seeks to redeem herself and do good are the same motives Nightmare Moon has, she HAS to be good, to be BETTER, because to fail would mean that she, Celestia and Equestria would've suffered for nothing. I don't think she can lower herself to the point where her desire for revenge destroys everything around her since that's never been what she wants.
Most Luna romances (as cliche as it is) have some spin on her learning to forgive herself so she can let go of the past. For Nightmare Moon, is more about her learning to lower the walls she built around herself because of the nature of her station and her own perception that she hurts those she cares about. Wooing Nightmare Moon is about her learning to love again and come to terms with her choices. Not to erase the past but to learn to forgive Celestia and most importantly, herself.

NMM certainly did not have Equstria's best interest at heart. She was motivated by frustration and a desire for vengeance against Celestia, and conquering Equestria was nothing more than a violent attempt to cope with her own insecurities. Luna's (rightful) concerns over what she would have done as NMM are based on the knowledge that NMM would have further destroyed her relationship with Celestia and harmed every pony in Equestria out of petty jealousy and rage. NMM does not care about the prosperity and well being of Equestria, only about satisfying her impulses. Your argument is based on the fact that NMM never killed Celestia in an alternate timeline, but you yourself leave open the possibility that NMM considered banishment worse than death, not to mention the fact that outright killing Celestia probably wasn't even an option in this children's cartoon. Why wouldn't Luna feel incredible guilt over banishing her sister, either? It's not just murder that's unjustly cruel. The fact that Celestia's banishment wasn't enough to satisfy her desire for power is evidence that NMM IS evil, not that she's not.

They asked how one could reconcile liking both characters and I answered. As I said, her insecurities ARE the motive behind her actions, specifically as to how the well-being of Equestria is a reflection of her own abilities and so Equestria is intertwined with NMM's perception of herself. As you pointed out, to go through with all of it destroyed her relationship with Celestia and Equestria is worse off because of it. I agree that there is a self-admiration NMM has for herself which is undeniable but what is the alternative? That is a part of the illusion / image she built of herself, so of course she is going to surround herself with those who flatter her in order to maintain that veneer of self-worth. That is why I'm arguing that Nightmare Moon wants Equestria to prosper in order to elevate herself, to prove that she is better. Destroying or bringing further harm to Equestria makes no sense since that was never the goal and would mean she did all of it for nothing.

I ran out of characters but yeah, NMM still seems to look back on that time within the moon with fear, which says more about NMM's desire for revenge. If it was about revenge, then killing Celestia at that point would have been more than ample payback but she didn't. Which makes it seem banishment was a fate worse than death that Luna was able to escape from thanks to her connection to the moon but Celestia might not. Why get even at that stage after your image was poisoned for 1000 years? It was justice first by inflicting the same damage on Celestia and in so doing, she had her revenge.
She ruled afterwards because she had to and was the only one who could. Her seeking more power, especially a power as dangerous as time travel is a threat to her rule so of course she would want it, that's not evidence that she is evil but rather she is seeking the means to protect her rule (and Equestria by extension) and with a power like that, she would be invincible.
I'm not delusional from following the chain of thought that led NMM doing what she did, I don't even like the show's portrayal because the lore is all over the place (and I'm a Lunafag first), especially when the NMM timeline shows up. I have my own headcanon that resolves all of this but the point is, NMM can be evil AND still want Equestria's well-being as one of her goals since as we've established, NMM's goals are to be respected and admired so she will present or style herself in such a way as to receive those things.

1) Luna really was frustrated with her night not being loved, but she wanted a vacation not totally power. But, a vacation by one of theor sovereigns would not jive well with the idea of an eternal diarchy. Hence the appearance of NMM and her attempt.to takeover as a well-crafted pretext for Luna to vanish for about 100 years as "banishment". In reality she was roaming the universe on vacation on various alien worlds.
2) Her return was also political theater. "Oh no! You defeated me as NMM! Now I shall be Luna again and share off evil forever!". Her return also served to help activate the mane 6 as bearers of the elements of harmony, via Celestia's star pupil, as a means of protecting Equestria.

The first draft will be very rough. Then, after some time go back and refine it. Then, have someone you trust read it and gove you some feedback on how to make it better. Love, loyalty, devotion. You can disagree with what you think the people you have the most affection for deserve or what's good for them, and on the flip side of that stand with them even at their worst without it being a contradiction of values.

I often imagine OCs in my head of Luna with a loyal knight/captain of the guard, with a fitting name like Perilune(The closest point to the moon in an object's orbit around it) or Midnight(we can just ignore the EQG form) who had a caveman melting in the ice style moment like the Pillars, preserved in some way. Luna feels responsible for him and works to make him see things her way and adjust to the new way of things, reformed, and while he'll go along with her orders his personality is difficult because he can't just be ordered to agree she shouldn't rule alone. He sometimes ends up manipulated by a third party that wants to sow chaos/weaken Equestria to bringing back Nightmare Moon under a mind altering influence of Luna thinking it's what's best for her and crosses the line. Other outcomes are a tragic death in her defense or a slow gentle force of reformation bonding through a love of Luna with a character like Snowdrop that lets him ease into it.
