Yes, the adults around him tragically failed to stop him from going down that path, but he was also a genuine retard who should've known better (especially after seeing all the blatant warning signs) and constantly refused to listen, he was far more cocky and arrogant than the other teenagers in the show. If a person just refuses to listen over and over again, you can't just put all the blame on the person who tried their best to warn them. The kid ultimately has to make the choice of whether or not to listen, and has to be smart enough to realize that they're being warned for a very good reason. I feel more sad for Katz's family members than I do for him.
