you can be cool with 2 eyes
    >>
    >>24041310
Mono eyes are better at long range target acquisition and sniping with weapons. Great for hit and run strikes from a distance.

Dual eyes are for redundancy and faster tracking. Shorter range but more robust and great for close quarters combat.

    >>24041450
Couldn't you just fix two monoeyes in place and get everything with no drawbacks then?

Isn't the Gundam itself technically a monoeye? Those lights aren't its eyes.
    >>

On the OG RX-78-2 they're not the main eyes, but they are nontheless genuinely functional eyes which work alongside the big mohawk sensor.

To deny the mono eye is to deny the spirit of Zeon itself. Away with you, nonbeliever.
    >>
    >>24041310
    1. Monoeye looks cool.
    2. It's the Zeon trademark.
    3. The Mobile Suit/Armor has more cameras dotting its body so it can do a full scan of its surroundings for the cockpit's display. Whether it has one or two eyes -- or even a head -- is trivial.
    4. It looks cool.
    5. I dunno lol.

You know it's for them to remain in a design archetype. You automatically know it's a bad guy if it has a mono eye.

Also they were mainly space units and focused on long distance. You could put one big fat expensive camera up there instead of two. Plus you always have to turn one of the eyes off to use Scopes and zoom and stuff.

    >3. The Mobile Suit/Armor has more cameras dotting its body so it can do a full scan of its surroundings for the cockpit's display. Whether it has one or two eyes -- or even a head -- is trivial.
This. Ever since the Gryps era, all mobile suits have panoramic cockpits that give full visibility in all directions, so it doesn't really matter. In essence, all mobile suits from Zeta onward (excluding the Victory series since they're fully transformable) have dozens of eyes, not one or two.

    >>24042556
pretty sure in most cases the head camera is still the best sensor for high performance and long range, the ones on the rest of the body are mainly just to fill in the gaps and would be wide angle or whatever

unless you're some kinda weirdo like hambrabi that has multiple monoeyes all over the body, or at least something like the Nu or MkII that has large sensors mounted on the chest instead of the invisible all-around cameras most MS with panoramic cockpits are said to have

    >>24042556
You know this is a wild thing that I haven't thought about which is interesting.

Who is making the glass for the cameras? Who is making the image chip (or whatever the hell those are called)?

Are there various manufacturers across all the fronts or is it one company supplying everyone? Strange thing I think about since optics IRL are from different peeps.

    >Who is making the glass for the cameras? Who is making the image chip (or whatever the hell those are called)?
in a digital camera sensor, it'd be the CCD (charged coupled device)

    >Are there various manufacturers across all the fronts or is it one company supplying everyone?
could easily be anaheim electronics, but especially during the OYW before AE took over a bunch of companies, the EFF had equipment being made by a variety of different vendors and companies

    >Couldn't you just fix two monoeyes in place and get everything with no drawbacks then?
Then it wouldn't be a mono-eye. It's the signature look of Zeon forces. Adding two eyes is blasphemy. It's why many former Zeon troops looked down on Axis Zeon. A bunch of teenage larpers who couldn't even get the basics of Zeon right.
