Franchise was ruined after Namco thought it was a good idea to add a moeshit bait character for the gooner vermin to drool on.
And lootboxes too, but I don't get mad about those.

I tried to make an Ace Combat thread with juicy bait.
A new game came out this week, and /m/ isn't talking about it? The board would've been all over it back in the day.

Finally finished downloading it last night. Bought a 2080ti last year and extra DDR4, and I have a new CPU in the mail. Hoping it will run singleplayer in windows 10, otherwise I'm finally taking the linux pill. Managed to avoid most spoilers so far. I've heard people say where AC7 was good but a 7/10 this is more like a 9/10, and the planes are a bit weightier. If these are true statements, I will have a blast.

About halfway through the realisation hit me that this might actually be the best Ace Combat and I had no idea how to feel about that. Genuinely baffled that a series that barely came back at all managed to make it back to peak form, normally you're lucky if it comes back good at all.
7 was good but it was very safe. 8 takes some risks and is better for it. Oddly enough, a lot of 6 and even AH DNA. The latter was very surprising when I clocked it but somehow it all works.
I don't think there's ever going to be a definitive winner but I think 8 has turned the usual holy trilogy arguments into a four-way race. I know 7's SP missions were better than 7 but I had no idea Project Aces had this in them, or Bamco had the balls to back it properly.
    >>24038959
Access would probably be the bigger problem. Western stuff is pretty easy, they've got the JASDF, US and allies rotating through airbases within the country and it's not too hard to schedule a few visits elsewhere. Plenty of AC fans on airbases willing to make it happen too. Russian isn't a whole lot harder, plenty of countries operate it and even if Russia itself isn't as outgoing now, they were doing a lot of goodwill stuff with international air shows and shit for a while.
Chinese kit, as a primarily Japanese studio no less, good fucking luck. They'd basically be stuck with press photos and air show videos, which wouldn't cut it for anything that isn't just a local production Flanker, and they already have Flankers aplenty. With the insane man hours each plane now represents with 8's fidelity, I don't think they'd love having to eyeball and make up half of it anyway. Hopefully they can find a way around it though, it's becoming an increasingly glaring gap in Strangereal's skies.
    >>
    >>24039008
A lot of the game does feel like a big celebration of the entire franchise from top to bottom. I'm very excited to see where they go with it in the future. Aside from the online mode, good Lord it seems like ass. I still need to try it myself but the impression I get of it is not good.
    >Access would probably be the bigger problem.
Pretty much. Years ago I think Chengdu reached out to PA but whatever relationship they had fell through, presumably due to a combination of the CCP not wanting much about their planes to be public knowledge and general Chinese butthurt about WW2. Any chance they had is gone now due to that recent flareup with Japan's new PM. They had reached out to the Koreans too but they also turned them down. Maybe they should reach out to the Turks next and get a look at the TAI Kaan.
    >>
The plane selection is so disappointing. 10 years in universe after 7 and we're still flying the same damn licensed planes. They should've added way more OCs from 3 and X other than the pre-Game.
    >>
    >>24038959
but in a fictional world where the countries that made the planes don't exist where they fight completely made up planes!

    >>24039008
Sure, modelling them accurately is great but lets be real, Ace Combat is about as close to real air combat as jerking off is to actually having sex. I would put it behind Warthunder for realism, that's for sure, I don't think a game like Ace Combat needs the exact chemical makeup of the composite material of the aircraft. As time goes on and we get more and more advanced Chinese aircraft I hope they reconsider their 'Licence' issue, its not like they really sell that many copies of the game in China anyway given how few Chinese have consoles.
    >>
    >>24039036
The multiplayer is basically Infinity 2, for better or worse. I suspect that having something like that tacked on was the only way Bamco were willing to bankroll such a lavish production so I can live with it. It's not like AC multiplayer has ever worked particularly well anyway. Fun to wail on an Arsenal Bird with seven other people at least.
    >>24039041
It's about the authenticity, not realism. Realism is considering four aim-120s a fairly chunky loadout and having to study up on BFM and ACM. Authenticity is your canards deflecting less as you reach past the sound barrier, cockpit ambience at cruise that sounds different between planes and the new soot/oil/fading weathering system.
They want to get both the planes as physical objects represented as lovingly as possible and to be able to put some of their characteristics and quirks into the game mechanically. The wider world knows sweet fuck all about the capabilities and characteristics of any of China's domestic designs and the PLAAF probably likes it that way. I don't think PA would even know with any great confidence where to put a J-10 or JF-17 in the tech tree.
    >>
    >>24039399

Maybe Ae Combat could work something out with Pakistan instead of China since they operate a lot of Chinese jets
    >>
    >>24038959
    >devs are autistic and want the real name and the plane modeled as close as they can get
So do most fans. Reality and pseudo-reality sells better than fantasy designs for niche things like jets. The one time they went all out of original jets, they bombed pretty hard.
    >>
I probably won't be able to get this until 3-4 years later because all I have is a shitty chink laptop, but good to know it's not a bad game
    >>

    >>

Of those two, 7 is probably the one to try. Emulating any of the PS2 trilogy is also a good entry point.
AH is... harder to be mad about now that it's not the last Ace Combat but it was very much a failed experiment in being more cinematic and intimate by learning from PS360-era shooters. Some good ideas but also some AC-130 missions and door gunner sequences, gritty real world setting and 'cool' cinematic mechanic that takes control out of your hands during the dogfights you came here for. Still a good soundtrack though.

If you do try them, use the proper controls. 'Normal' in the older games, 'expert' in 7/8. You might eat shit for a little bit but you'll have a much better time in the long run. All the mainline games take place in an alternative universe with different countries and continents but somehow the same aircraft, main thing you need to remember is fuck Belka. Even when it's not their fault. Especially when it's not their fault.
    >>
    >>24039825
the ps2 trilogy still have maajor graphical innacuracies when emulated. the modern ports for 5 and zero are good and i'mm just a fan of real hardware in general where 4 is still easy to find.
    >>
    >>24039834
They still have significant issues? I thought the major ones had finally been ironed out.
And yeah, real hardware is also good. It's how I played them all a little over a decade ago now. Recently went back to 04 and it still looks remarkably good on a CRT.
    >>
    >>24039835

I emulated the holy trilogy last year, I don't remember if I had to apply any game specific hacks or not but I was using PCSX2 Nightly 1.6 something. Honestly the only thing TRULY broken was the "steel rain" effect in 5 and that same effect in Zero during the final mission. There's a rendering mode that runs well and has it as translucent grey squares, and rendering mode that runs shittier but looks marginally better and has the effect rendered correctly but it TANKED my fucking frame rate. Ryzen 5 2600 CPU, 16GB DDR4, Nvida 1070 at the time.

I am continuing chain posting because we are a slow board and I have free will. My life is fucking insanely jam packed right now, I am finally back in front of my computer. I got through first-time startup and the automatic benchmark put me on low with the old CPU installed, I disabled vsync for more FPS gainz. Didn't get a chance to load any missions yet. Fingers crossed. Gonna triple check compatibility of the new CPU and throw that in later tonight, I would ASSUME the GPU is going to be working harder but I have zero clue how UE5 cares about that and I am below minimum spec anyway. At least I don't have to fuck around with windows 11. Yet.

In my experience, UE5 is GPU intensive but is heavily dependent on CPU anyways. With STALKER 2 my GPU *should* have been getting garbage framerates, less than 60, as that's what people were saying but the fact I put a 7800X3D in there a few months beforehand, carried it to 90+

Anyways - holy fucking shit this game was incredible. AC5 was my favorite, just ahead of Zero, and all I wanted from it really was the same feeling of actually fighting a war with your wingmen; this journey between all of the characters and how each mission impacts that. Needless to say, they fucking NAILED that part. The genuine filler missions are actually interesting to some extent or serve a narrative purpose instead of merely padding the mission list. The first fight I had with the shadows put the dumbest fucking grin on my face and it didn't go away until I hit the replay screen.

When Kobayashi started doing some Animals as Leaders shit with the soundtrack, they won my heart then and there.

    >>
    >>24040304
Upgrades making regular MSLs extremely spammable, Russian aircraft being capable of extremely silly maneuvers, and two SPW is making up for it. There will be DLC with higher tech, hopefully.
    >>
    >>24040252
The FCU has been invaded and occupied three times in the past 30 years by the time the game starts, had to substantially rebuild after at least one of them, weathered being on one of the worst hit continents from Ulysses, the ensuring rebuilding, economic crisis and refugee crisis, and had a massive coup of itself and now subsumed member states just a few years before that. They've also been presumably trying to standardise integrated forces from new member states and expand to cover all their new territory. While being undermined by a decreasingly stable world and the rising power of stateless megacorps flexing their muscle.
You're lucky they can afford to give you a Raptor at all, I don't think the budget stretched to the lasers. Hell even in the F-35 you don't get an HMCS helmet, meanwhile apparently Trigger got to keep his while he's off flying Starfighters with Avril. You would not be operating off a 90 year old carrier in legacy bugs if they had Osea money.

That said, yeah kinda wish there were some more fun post-game toys but I can live with it.

In any case, this newest entry really ticked off all the boxes of stuff I wanted to happen in Ace Combat, but not in the way I thought it'd happen. I really didn't expect the soundscape to have so much Nirvana, lmao. The player character being a force to unite the world and take on the concept of war itself, that was a thing I'd been hoping for since they sorta did it in 7, but I'm glad it's more overt. I think in this new Ace trilogy, that this entry is the closest to 5, which is good because that was the most 'Ace Combat' Ace Combat

There's more than the overt mechanical nod, you can see it in stuff like the more granular construction, in-cockpit cutscenes and a few other aspects. The mechanical nod is like a fucking jumpscare, but I actually really like how they use it. It's a nice way to have a little interactive
    >no no NO
moment that you couldn't really do as tightly with the regular mechanics, instead of just making it a cutscene.
    >>24041998
    >stuff I wanted to happen in Ace Combat, but not in the way I thought it'd happen
I think that's the key right there. There's a confidence in delivering the core experience people want without feeling obligated to do it precisely how people expect it. 8 rhymes a lot with 5 but it never feels like it's trying to be a soft reboot of it or anything, it has a very distinct identity. If anything the commonalities just serve to underline the tragedy of Strangereal, which works well for a game so focused on the human cost of war. I didn't even care that much for it in 7, but seeing the ISEV reframed as a relic of and monument to a more optimistic era kind of got to me. 8, particularly with how directly it connects to 3, really feels like no matter what you do we're in the bad end timeline. It also makes it feel like the inevitable direction of the world since the Belkan war and Ulysses. I felt more complex things than usual when the ending cutscene rolled.
Also interesting to compare it to recent release of Halo's campaign remake, a last-ditch effort to literally just do the thing people liked again that seems to have instead finally sunk a much bigger, younger franchise. At least in its original lineage.

The game's pretty good. High 8/low 9 as far as my score is concerned.

My only gripes are that there's a bit too much down time during some missions, it's annoying when your position is reset during cutscenes, and the game is maybe a bit too easy even on harder difficulties. But that might just be due to the fact that I've been playing these since 4 came out.

Overall, I like the story. Much more coherent than 7's was. Not quite the same highs as 5 or Zero, but I'd rate it higher than 6 and 7.

This really feels like the culmination of pretty much all the best features from past titles.

Online is fun enough. The lobby being lazily copy and pasted from Gundam Battle Operation 2 is quite funny. But I appreciate that the mission style and presentation is mostly just Infinity, but without the bullshit fuel system. Emergency Sorties and Scramble could stand to spawn a little more often. And the game is pretty punishing if you don't have a plane somewhat decently leveled.

the storytelling is more coherent than 7 but i feel the "vibes" and atmosphere are much weaker and lean much more into generic saccharine heroic fanfare.

and there are still things about the english dub that expose you are playing an awkward translation. One thing that kinda annoys me is Dealer speaking in a posh english accent and yet his still of speech as written isn't posh at all and he uses slang that isn't even english which makes it hard to credit the accent as a dev creative choice. Sorta like mei ling's fresh off the boat accent in MGS1.
    >>
    >>24043719
    >the game is maybe a bit too easy even on harder difficulties

    >speaking in a posh english accent and yet his still of speech as written isn't posh at all and he uses slang that isn't even english
Accents don't always tell you everything about a person's actual background or lived experience. If anything it'd be stranger if a guy from Strangereal sounded exactly like you'd expect a British stereotype to. Might not be what you expected from him but it's hard to see it as a flaw.
    >>
    >>24043939
in a world where england doesn't exist the incongruity doesn't really tell any story beside "voice director decided the accent on a whim". it's the sort of thing that should be decided by the writer if you want it to reflect something like an immigration background. or else you get mei ling with her accent contradicting her written backstory.
    >>
    >>24043956
Would it be any less weird if everyone had American accents in a setting without a United States?

    >>
    >>24043961
the characters speak in generaic american military jargon in the translation so american accents are what you expect to hear from them. and like hispanic accents for the vaguely hispanic inspired countries doesn't feel weird when the names drop a lot spanish in there already.

    >>24043966
it's basically the same but more cutscenes, less varied mission and even more rugpulls. only 2 true annihilation battles and they make you fight the lang battleship 3 times and each fight is comical with the amount of moving the objective goalpost.
    >>
    >>24043926
7 did have some very good moments. I don't think the story is like, outright trash or anything. But you can really tell it was like three different story concepts mashed together.

The only mission I even kinda had difficulty with was Mission 28. Loved how hectic it felt with all those planes, and then the Shadows getting in. Such a huge scale.

the aircraft tree system makes relatively easy to get stuck with ill suited planes on a first playthrough if you don't have a good idea of what to look for already. it was so much better when you could just sell the ones you don't need to buy the ones you do like armored core. and you definitely can't expect newer players to beat the "boss" missions with the starter plane.

Raytracing is permanently enabled with no option to turn it off, last I checked. I think a lot of their tech they used to make the clouds so pretty is tied to that, so Project Aces said RTX STAYS ON.

I don't look at my FPS counter, it's definitely not a solid 60 but it doesn't chug. I looked at my CPU usage percentage and I'm actually not maxing the 2600 out, never got around to throwing the new one in. I'll do that eventually and see if performance improves. The game still looks pretty good, I only have a 1080p monitor anyway. Someday when I have money I will build a 4k capable liquid cooled rig.

I think the original lore from around 04 treated them more like a not-United-States but now that Osea exists to fill that role, in 8 they feel more like a federalised EU. Not even getting into what AHL does to try and make 2 work in Strangereal.
Point is I actually quite like having a visible variety of backgrounds, and if anything unlike this anon I wish they had more of it in the voiced characters.
But given that Tasha and her father speak English with native proficiency and accents I think we're also just kind of meant to infer there's differences we aren't always hearing, particularly with characters the player sees regularly and needs to be able to easily understand. Dealer having a British accent works and there's at least one

it's not him having an accent it's him haaving an accent and clearly not being written with any sort of english dialect at the same time is the problem. a writing and voice direction mismatch. it's just ass bad with every game that decides to give a character an english accent but they say fries, mom and ass.
    >>
    >>24046194
    >Mum/mom
That's a spelling thing, you'd render it as mom either way when your UI language is American English. At worst that's a stylistic choice.
    >Fries
Not uncommon for people to refer to the kind of thing you'd get from maccas as 'fries' and the kind you'd get with fish as 'chips'.
    >Ass/arse
Again often more to do with how you render the accent on paper than what's actually being said.

We never see Dealer outside his role in the sky anyway, should his instructions to Joker flight have included more references to a king and his top hat?
    >>
    >>24046426
they are different words with equivalent meaning and in the same way uk english and us english the same word can have opposing meanings. ass is even a competiitor to arse within the parts of the uk thans to american media but brits don't hear them as the same word.

But regardless of accent there's atotal lack of any poshness or "refinement" in the way dealer speaks even though they had the va do full on fake bbc english because the lines weren't written with that in mind.If Tasha's father sspoke the same way tasha did you'd find it offputting since their lines are meant to reflect the generation gap.

    >>and there are still things about the english dub that expose you are playing an awkward translation.

I dont know about THAT, I've been replaying the game in the japanese dub with English subtitles, and what I've been getting is that the portrayal of different ethnicities was way better in english than japanese. Might just be me, but at some points I wasn't able to track who was talking, I know they have several a-listers on the sub, but tracking it in game with the subs kind of awkwardly being on the top is making the experience kinda middling for me, and I'm only on mission 08.

And besides, I think English is the way to play. I can't take Deborah Wilson's charger seriously without her voice being there, even when she's disembodied; EVEN if her jp actress sounds like Misato Katsuragi.

But yeah I think there's some goofiness to the English dub as well, but I kind of think that's it's charm. There's a strange, real comfort in knowing EVERYONE in ace combat talks like THAT.
    >>
    >>24047226
It's a really fine line to walk. They pretend you're too normal and it feels silly, they talk the player up too much and it feels patronising while breaking the tone. I think 8 found a better balance than most.
    >>24047756
I liked Pike a lot more than I thought I would. I remember seeing her in the reveal trailer and being kind of worried that we had another Deborah Wilson stern black woman authority figure, she's a good VA but she gets pretty heavily typecast. In practice I like that she's very clearly putting on a work persona as XO and that's not the sum total of who she is. You don't get a massive picture of it but you get enough to get a picture that there's more there. She's very clearly personally satisfied past a professional level whenever you manage to get one up on Sotoa, she mourns cakes uneaten with Tasha, she clearly takes it personally when the CSG loses escorts, and of course there's probably the first Mozambique drill in a plane game right in front of you.
It's the kind of writing Ace Combat's good at, where you get enough hints to feel like there's a broader scale outside what's immediately relevant. Also a lot less one note than a lot of 7's attempts at the same thing, much as I may love Long Caster and would absolutely eat both at his restaurant.

Really, just some of the best character writing the series has had across the entire main cast since 3 and maybe Pixy. They even had me liking the nepo baby crypto bro in the end.

7's "Singularity" nonsense thankfully stayed in the DLC, as fun as it was. it wasn't THAT bad in 7's main story otherwise, the big moments for Trigger was just being known as the guy who could keep up with Mihaly (an already aging piece of shit) and later the evil ravens (and said birds were being dogpiled on by several squadrons on top of that)
    >>
    >>24053571
Yeah, it was fun as a nod to the audience and a way to quickly communicate that the DLC premise was basically 'what if a protagonist was the bad guy', but it could've very easily ruined everything if they tried to make it part of the lore seriously going forwards. Weirdly enough I think the DLC also did a better job of the whole 'stick with Trigger' thing. It struck me as more like underbaked player glaze in the main campaign but the DLC refocused it around the idea that the war's been a meatgrinder and Trigger brings more of his friends home safe than most, which I liked.
It and 8 also really like the idea that you can't save everyone. The P-8 crews in One Million Relief Plan knowing they're going to die and being prepared to because of the stakes of failure, and the mission deliberately overwhelming you to the point it's basically impossible to save them all, really stuck out to me. The mission even has a fallback state for if the last P-8 gets shot down after initiating the boss fight, you stop getting early warning about it resurfacing. 8's missions do a ton of that kind of stuff. Wings of Wax, Theve, the big fleet battle, there's a bunch where they want you to feel more like you did what you could than you saved the day. I think it's a good tonal place for the games to be.

All of the fancy new lighting tech that was supposed to make games look better, was actually not used to make games look better. It was used to skip all effort by devs to make good lighting and optimize it. They just slap the "fancy lighting fx" button in unreal slop 5 and offload the burden onto your PC, which now needs to be 5x as powerful to run games that look the same and have a bunch of microtransaction cancer in them.

    >No, just running any games on "the cloud" (someone else's computer) and streaming the video to your terminal. That's what game streaming is.
Huh. Wouldn't that create more costs for the provider? Does that mean you're supposed to have a paid subscription to access a video game as a service then? Sounds like bullshit but I'd believe that some clearly unspecified group has a hard on for that already. Also, sounds like input lag alone would make it (hopefully) impossible.

A bunch of corps have tried it already, it's been proposed a dozen times and attempted multiple times over the last two decades. Yes, they want to make it a subscription service, and so that you can't own games at all. Geforce now is still doing it IIRC, google tried it, I think gamespy tried it too. Latency does make it a shit experience and only retards defend it, but the corps won't stop trying it. The AI shit is a perfect opportunity for them to try it again because now buying parts is insanely expensive.

The end goal on the gaming corpo level is erasing ownership, so they can just turn your shit off whenever they want to sell the newer shit. They hate that their current products also have to compete with their own older products.

Xbox Gamepass has that option for certain games that are on the original FatBox or the 360, but also some random titles like the recent Call of Duty games, that can be played on PC through cloud streaming. I don't know how that compares to Geforce Now, or Amazon's (dead?) gaming service.
If you're wondering "isn't that shit?" yes it is. I tried it out of curiosity, and despite me having Google Fiber for autistic reasons, there is noticeable lag and bitrate spikes that often shat the experience. If I had to compare it to something, I would compare it to watching a camrip of something in theaters recorded by a malaysian with massive chinese subs on screen.
    >The end goal on the gaming corpo level is erasing ownership, so they can just turn your shit off
This is the overall feeling I got from actually playing that. They're currently focused on pricing consumers out of everything, so they can print money to pay themselves for AI services and parts for AI servers, and the consumer will pay more to have a worse experience for something they don't own. Now the state of gaming for the last several years already made it clear that nobody owns anything, but they want to make it so that the thing you paid for is worse on purpose.

That's a summation of the majority of their local culture. Their entire accent they pretend is actually 50 different accents, and all their alternative spellings and pronunciations, are an early example of astroturfing.

What happened was their inbred nobility desperately wanted to distance themselves from both their peasants and those horrific provincial colonists after they got put in the international cuck box, so they deliberately manufactured their dick-in-mouth accent. And then the peasants copied it because thats how trends work. Their accent isn't natural. Their retarded mispronunciations are actually just wrong. American english is more authentic, has changed less over time than British english.
    >>
    >>24058782
The only part of your post that's close to correct is that the posh accent is something invented by the circular behavior of English elite. Otherwise, I have to ask, do you genuinely think there is only one british accent and only one American accent? You know that in both countries it can vary heavily depending merely on what city you're from, right...? By "American accent" do you mean Bostonian? Maybe Southern? What about SoCal? Maybe Mid Western or New York accents?

You aren't just pulling this shit out of your ass for no reason, right anon..? You wouldn't go on the internet to tell lies, right?
    >>
    >>24059028
No, he's right about American English being closer in pronunciation to ye olde Englishe than modern Britainese.

But the point is that that one dude was complaining that Dealer's accent and word choices weren't posh enough to read as posh to him, which is dumb for several reasons.

    1) The majority of British accents read as posh compared to the American English almost everyone else was speaking, so it does what it's supposed to.

    2) Dealer is deliberately written to come off as a detached upper crust professional at the beginning, but the more you get to know him over the course of the game, the more he's revealed as quite connected and emotionally invested with the crew, and with Joker flight in particular. By the time you learn that he was mentored by Pike, and his call sign is derived from hers, Gambler, it should be evident that whatever aspect of his background that happens to be posh is only part of who he is, and the way he communicates reflects that.
    >>
    >>24059166
My understanding is that it's more that different aspects of pronunciation have drifted over time and some aspects are closer since it wasn't being done as consciously, but 'General American is how it's supposed to sound' is a fairly misleading oversimplification. And also ignores that before you even get to an American accent you have a whole bunch of regional dialects and accents originally from the UK scattered around that levelled out with each other on a regional level in different mixtures of influences before you even get into the drift itself.

As for Dealer and the FCU's wider use of casino-adjacent themes for a lot of callsigns and flight names, there's two things I really like about it. One is that it's clearly an FCUN thing. Purple Magic, Flying Mole and Bigfoot are clearly FCUAF and don't follow the theme at all, and it's nice to see Project Aces actually remembering that air force pilots and naval aviators usually have distinct cultures per service in countries that treat them as distinct occupations.
The other is that you can see it as either a bit of a cynical 'you're things to be used in a game' kind of way or where Dealer and Gambler end up going with it later, more about the personal investment who clearly see themselves as more a broad metaphor with everyone present as 'the player'. It's a subtle shift but it conveys a lot.
    >>
    >>24059028
    >Their entire accent they pretend is actually 50 different accents
    >do you genuinely think there is only one british accent

There are 3-4 american accents. There is one british accent with different variations based on how much dick is in your mouth, there is the irish accent, and there is the scottish, which is less an accent and more deliberate mangling of pronunciation so bad it is diverging into a second language with the same written form. Regional subvariants are not new accents. Your country is the size of a small state. If you are counting the irish and the scottish, I would remind you that they do not consider you to be their countrymen, you consider them to be your countrymen by force of arms.

I'm not sure what you mean here, but it feels like an interesting idea. Can you explain differently?
    >>
    >>24059656
I'm not saying that it is Middle English, just that it's closer. Beyond drift, American English has too much of the various immigrant languages to be exactly like Middle English. Not just Germanic and Romantic influences, but quite a bit of from the various phases of West African/West Indian, er, "migration" (not always with the quotes, of course).
    >>
    >>24060555
Chess might make the example a little clearer. If you had all the flights named after chess pieces or plays, you could interpret that as meaning that leadership sees everyone as useful, disposable pieces. You might be a little disheartened to be named Pawn Flight.
If however, you were led by leadership who very clearly didn't see you as disposable you might see it as less 'I'm a pawn being played with' and more 'we're playing against the enemy'.
When Dealer and the XO talk with gambling metaphors, other than when they're glazing you they're not talking about you as being cards, the things you play the game with and might need to give up or mislead with to win. They're talking about the things that they and their subordinates can do, the 'cards' you can play as the collective poker player. Like in the second land battleship fight, when the XO has Dealer's 'next card' it's all engaged aircraft bouncing the cannons off course so they can't get a firing solution.
Think of it like seeing it as FCU high command playing poker against Sotoan leadership with everyone involved as cards to be held or played as needed, for the more cynical take. The distinction between 'the player' and 'the cards' is important. Your immediate leadership uses the metaphor more like 'us playing against them'. Dealer and the XO see themselves as with you, not above you.

For a related idea, think about AC7. Ultimately the 444th is just saying the quiet part out loud a lot of the time, particularly with what the DLC suggests about OADF loss rates. Sending people to war invariably means less coming back. It still feels different being told 'we expect many of you to die doing this and that's fine' versus 'many of you may not make it back but this is important enough that we have to'.
Which framing is chosen tells you something about what they think of you and how they approach what they're sending you into.

Probably made an absolute fucking mess of that but fuck it, too late now.
