Hate me all you want, but I believe /m/ would be better served if it became a real "Science Fiction" board.

the name /m/ filters out 1,000,000 /tv/ star wars threadsit must remain intact
>>24036743Congratulations, you just sabotaged your own thread
No. You guys do not want /trek/ here, and I don't want /trek/ here either.
>>24036748Or worse, /who/gen
>>24036748Why not?>Abrams movies are bad>STD is bad>Pickle Trek is mediocreWhat else is there to it?
>>24036753No, we’re anime centric thank you very much
Note: ignore op, he’s anti mecha and wants to scrub anything Japanese off this board and merge it with /tv/
>>24036753The guy who took out an ad for a Star Trek role play on 4chan because he is currently stalking me.

>>24036709Cool ship, where is it from?
>>24037012https://zalmon.bsky.social/
I love spaceship radiators.
>>24036709I actually prefer ships to robots, but that is categorically false; mecha filters out the worst people imaginable in a manner comparable to moe and fanservice.
Kill all realism fags.
>>24036753>abrams movies are badwrongi will not elaborateInto darkness was KINO
>>24036709>real "Science Fiction"Let me know when they've invented it.
>>24036709What does that even mean? Just a place to talk about general sci-fi without any giant robots? You can do that on >>>/tg/.
>>24037109Why would a spaceship need wings?
>>24037288People assume you need them the same way your PC CPU needs cooling fins, or your car has big giant sails to expel heat from the engine.
>>24037294Not sure why you're being dismissive. The people who assume that include spacecraft engineers. The only reason we haven't had any that needed radiators of that scale is because nothing's running the kind of powerplant Discovery was.
/m/ was moots designated Gundam SEED containment board.the modern reality is you have much better mecha discussion on /a/, /m/ is a dead board only used for reposting stale as fuck UC gundam memes.
>>24037217Bring back when science was fantasy
renaming boards is impossible at this point, and even if you do, it's not gonna revive that board since you changed one niche subject to another.
>>24036709/m/ would get better after your slit your wrists and throat.
>>24037314Because in any actual production design, fin-style radiators are the first thing customers and engineers are going to get rid of. Active cooling systems of some kind will replace passive cooling almost immediately. That's why the assumption you need them is flawed.
>>24037338Wrong you can't talk about supers there. You will get immediately page 10'd with them spurring out about currently airing shows and gray hair girls.
>>24037109For me, it’s the droplet radiators. Who doesn’t want to give their hard sci-fi ship some wings of light?
>>24038120Well, your ship may not be running hot enough, for one.
>>24036709>nuclear pulse enginecareful, you'll summon the anti-orion spergcool image though. spaceship threads are always welcome on this board
>>24038120That ship’s using dusty plasma reactors, actually.
>>24038131>*radiatorsftfy
>>24037338You almost can't get a good discussion on /a/ nowadays
>>24038100Sure, there's other options and you don't need fins specifically, but you do need something. Fins work and they've got advantages over something active like a droplet cooling system in certain circumstances (longevity, mostly) so I don't think they'd necessarily be replaced ASAP.Personally, I like the ceramic radiator strip concept that was (among other places) in ME1's codex. More rugged than fins and you get cool glowing lines halfway to >>24038120's wings of light.
>>24037357A modern take on Golden Era Sci-fi would be dope. A lot of the older serials like Buck Rodgers and Flash Gordon still hold up despite their age.I'm at least happy that they're starting to go back and do some of the Pillars of the genera. Here's hoping they eventually get to Ringworld, The Man Kitzn Wars, and The Hyperion Cantos. The Book of the New Sun would also be dope.
>>24038200Invincible was a decent game
>>24038200i for one do not desire modern enshitifications of classics. leave ringworld and known space alone. hyperion is even less likely to be done well than niven's stuffthey just did foundation and it looked fucking retardedapparently the DUNC guy wants to do rendezvous with rama which might be ok i guess
>>24038655I recently finished Rendezvous with Rama. I'm just happy that these writers are finally going back and looking at what influenced the genera.I heard we're also supposed to be getting a more true to the book version of Starship Troopers.I'd honestly like to see more of Heinlein's other works. The Moon is a Harsh Mistress and Have Spacesuit Will Travel would I think both be really good.
>>24038655The Ringworld and especially Rama sequels did enough damage to those that it would be difficult for any adaptation to make it noticeably worse. It would be cool to see the visuals with modern technology, but I have zero expectation of the rest being any good at all.
>>24038842>just happy that these writers are finally going back and looking at what influenced the generareasonable take, i just don't trust the industry not to "re-imagine" it in an awful way>more true to the book version of Starship Troopersheard this rumor many times before, never pans out. would always be happy to see it but not holding out hope>>24038848>The Ringworld and especially Rama sequels did enough damage to thoseextremely true, i always tell people to avoid the sequelsfair enough that modern visuals can be enjoyable with the right expectations
they're doing it again! put me in the screencap!!!
mecha musume is /m/
>>24040185Yes
>>24036753Lower decks was pretty much the only good recent trek
>>24037288To be cool
>>24041758You are fucking retarded and should kill yourself.
>>24041758Correct, though apparently SNW is good at times. Can't be bothered to give it a chance after how much STD shit the bed and how godawful the bits of Picard I saw were.
Does anyone have a scan of that one Star Trek comic where the ToS crew encounters mechs? I remember it existing as a real thing.
>>24041758>>24036753There is no good modern star trekhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BJ_7EXT9eeYhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=okYYHwO3Ijs
>>24041793I recall one about some basic beep boop type robots I think ?
>>24041826Nah the one I'm thinking of had full-blown mobile suits attempting to intercept the Enterprise.
>>24036709Why post a silly fantasy space-battleship then? All of those technologies are but superficial namedrop of "plausible" tech, still portrayed into a convenient (and fictional) WWII space-boat.There's many reasons we may not even wage war with warship as we imagine by convention.
>>24043845>posts dudes in spacesuits fighting By this interpolation, PA and Mecha are a valid next step
>>24038100Yes, real ships would never have something like that
>>24043884Here the funny thing, in space they are!Space debris are crazy dangerous and blowing up a space-station or spaceship in orbit could trigger a Kessler effect. Not counting that you then have to replace whatever the station was for.So it would be valid to send a mech-carrier ship, that won't be destroyed midway because doing to would turn it into wreck and debris that plow into your station.Once the carrier match velocity close to the station, mech are deployed to capture it by taking control of critical system like >>24043917 radiators. The mech have limbs so they can grab the station and move without using propellant, which would be precious as hell.Using melee weapons to avoid generating debris.Said like that however, it is unlikely to result in humanoid mech, more like tentacle bot....unless it's to take Moon facilities or maybe O'Neill colonies Gundam style.Any place with reduced gravity would favor legged locomotion over wheel&tracks (because low grav = shit brake & risk of toppling)Once the tech is good enough, you don't strictly need more than 2 legs, but in vacuum you'll profit from having manipulators that don't ask human to EVA outside. Then you add a pilot to give order & alignment to the AI, less remote because of the time-lag and risk of jamming.
>>24044311So…the Sentinels from Matrix?
>>24036785What the fuck I haven't been to /trek/ in a minute the hell is that about it was wondering about the ad.
>>24043917Well, the idiotic shit show isn’t exactly a “production” model, is it?
>>24045086so which ones are?
>>24045079Yes, but you might want to keep an human nearby.Unless we reach a point where AIs are more easily trusted than human. Your fault for not sucking up to the CEO-Emperor Musk the 4th.
>>24045240No…no anon we will NOT have Musks dream of Iains The Culture.
>>24037357They did. It's called Masters of the Universe 2026.
>>24037357If you can believe it Kingdom Hearts is this and it's still going because it took a lot from Final Fantasy obviously. Off the top of my head my favourite examples are: >Victorian era civilization dons mecha looking astronaut suits to dive to another world>That other world just straight up has pilotable mecha and airships but with knight looking riot police>Hallow Bastion is a medieval fairy tale castle full of weird magic technologyand human experiments going on underrground, and it has the Grid from Tron plugged into it>Star Wars will be in 4 which is antasy/fairytale + scifi>Leonard Nimoy and Mark Hamill were chosen as VAs because Trek vas Wars
>>24045344Ick>>24045353Leonard has been dead for 12 years anon. Also…Square=Xenogears=Shit
We used to have star wars, trek and doctor who threads all the time a decade ago.
>>24045439>Leonard has been dead for 12 years anon.https://youtu.be/RL03lV2oenwBut he'll still be alive by these games.
>>24041790It is. It's inconsistent but it probably has the strongest first season of any Trek show. If you're someone who just can't stand anything that feels like it was produced this side of Y2K then it probably won't win you over but as the only show actually trying to be a modern take on the classic shows it works. S1 and 2 are strong, 3 got hit pretty bad by the writer's strike and 4's scatterbrained but with some highs. 3 and 4 were also both written on the assumption they'd be the last seasons which probably didn't help, but they're getting a truncated six episode S5 next year. The production design is also outstanding. I have no idea how the other current shows turned out so ugly when they were clearly capable of this the whole time. Really nice costume, prop and set work as a modern reimagining of the TOS look, with some additional visual continuity to the films and Constitution refit.I want one of those away team leather jackets.
>>24045091The Apollo and Soyuz craft all have in-line radiators.
>>24045817They were also about the size of two tin cans and ran next to no electronics. Also a Soyuz had a coolant leak likely because something hit one of those in-line radiators ~4 years ago.>>24045790Is it safe to say the writing team doesn't seem to hate their own subject matter? I'm not necessarily opposed to modern stuff (I mostly enjoyed Lower Decks once it stopped doing whatever the first two episodes were), but there was a spitefulness to the other shows that was both thoroughly unpleasant and frankly antithetical to Star Trek as a whole. What I've seen of the props/etc. does seem nice.
>>24045827>Is it safe to say the writing team doesn't seem to hate their own subject matter?Yeah. Some people will say they do but it's also just kind of a stock insult these days for anything working with an existing property. If anything in a few places I'd say it possibly shows a little too much affection for its own good.If it sounds at all of interest I'd suggest giving it a crack, worst possible outcome is that you watch an episode or two and move on with your life. There's also a Lower Decks crossover in S2, which inexplicably works pretty well.
>>24045838Yeah, that line gets overused for sure (what doesn't these days?), but it really felt apt for those other series. I'm tight on time currently, but I'll be keeping SNW in mind.
>>24040185Ryusei thread is /m/
>>24037357Thank you for not posting Star Wars. Star Wars was never REALLY sci-fantasy anyway, but Phantom Menace was the final nail in the coffin.
>>24036709Only forward thrusters, no way to slow down.I don't see anything to make it rotate fast 180 degrees. What the fuck is this dumb design?
>>24047853Just what was it then?
>>24036737Don't forget Digimon and occasionally Battletech.
>>24048267It's JUST science fiction.Aside from Psionics (that's all The Force is in the original trilogy) being more of a scifi thing than a fantasy thing, everything not involving the Skywalkers was 100% pulp science fiction. Imperial soldiers and alien rebels with laser gun space battles and robots is how 99.9% of the Galaxy's population experience existence. Han Solo's viewpoint in the first movie is how most people view the world: The Force is some mumbo jumbo made up by some out space monks that isn't real. The only reason why people insist that it's sci-fantasy is the swords and the religious way The Force is talked about. If it was called The Power of Mind, people would readily understand its just psychic powers. Then the Prequels came out and reduced The Force as explainable as being a bio-electric field produced by a common microbe that exists in the Galaxy that some people are able to manipulate if they're infected with enough of them.
>>24048732That and aspect of the tech are treated with a fantasy push as well.
>>24045353>Kingdom Hearts>Victorian era civilization dons mecha looking astronaut suits to dive to another world>That other world just straight up has pilotable mecha and airships but with knight looking riot policeExcuse me?
>>24036737Modern gundam isn't even good.I would like /m/ - Machines scifi.
>>24036709/m/ would get split off to /m/ again though >>24036737As opposed to turning this into majority of marvel, dc, star wars, and other slop because 4channers have shit taste when there isn't restriction to Japanese media?
>>24036709You are low IQ.
>>24053536Fuck off.
This board needs to end. It already passed its reason for existing and it barely has a community anymore. As it is, it's a waste of space on 4chan. Rapeape and the others should do a turnover on boards, purging those with too little traffic.
>>24053134https://youtu.be/eh39IsjmvNo
>>24060738Fuck off retard.
>>24037226/tg/ is funny that way. You can basically discuss ANY topic on that board as long as its within the context of being within a roleplaying game. 'hey guys I'm running a noncombat RPG where we all play as Korean high school girls so this thread is gonna be all about K-POP, K-Dramas a-'
>>24060738It is still too early to close the /m/ board.
>>24062011No, it isn't. There's little to no activity outside the perpetual "General" threads. Move those elsewhere and get rid of a pointless board.
You should create /mg/
