    He was 85
His last recording (to my knowledge) as Thaedus promoting Invincible's season finale got some people concerned over his health
He noticeably sounded different than he did in the actual show and he was cancelling convention appearances left and right
It's sad but 85 is still a long life to leave at

It is pretty much just a law of averages. The current male life expectancy for white males is ~76 years and the white female life expectancy is ~81. Anyone close to or over those ages is on borrowed time. Neil was 79, Cullen was 85 and Curry was 80 so they lived beyond the male Dolly Parton was 80 so they lived beyond the average. Dolly Parton lived to 80 so she died just short of the average.

    >Yet they will still be screwed when it comes to the animal noises!

They've basically got so much stock audio of his various grunts they're set
    >>
I can't think of any other voice actor who's performance actually improved with age. Listen to him in the Cybertron games and the sense of authority and wisdom aand weariness is palpable. It feels like a wild west sheriff combined with King Arthur. I don't think we'll ever again hear the like of it.
    >>
    >>24002009
It's because the character itself changed drastically as the franchise gradually got more serious. In G1, for all his talk about not just being a standard hero that's kind of what Optimus was. He was older and more softspoken and polite than average but at the end of the day he was there to save the day and hopefully one day end the war. In later continuities, or at least the ones where Prime is played by Cullen there's no real saving the day Cybertron is already lost and Prime just has to kind of deal with that.

    >>

Devastation Optimus is great. Perfect balance of epic leader Optimus and the guy who regularly shit talked Megatron and made cheesy jokes. Devastation Megatron is equally great, he's G1 Megatron but with some depth to him, probably Welker's best performance as the character. It's just a shame that the best (and sadly last) showing of these two together is locked behind an old game that people can't even buy anymore.
    >>
    >>24003423
    >>24004251

The amazing thing is about 2 years ago the surviving G1 cast did a table read of the very first episode again and Cullen and Welker could pull off the "young" version of the characters almost as well as they used to. Cullen had a few hiccups but not many while Welker not only did the old G1 style Megatron almost perfectly but also all his old character (his Skywarp was a little off but I think that's just because he forgot how to do the voice rather than age). Meanwhile Bumbleebee's VA literally sounded like he hadn't aged a day in 40 years, while sadly Michael Bell sounded pretty old and weak.
    >>
    >>24005282
That just proves how talented voice actors can be over the course of entire decades.
    >>
    >>24005323
It's a lost art. I doubt there are many current generation voice actors that can match these legends. Sadly once they're all gone the evil corpos will just replace them all with AI zombies.

Optimus Prime dies in the 1980s movie and his soul enters the multiverse? This is so weird. I hate multiverse nonsense. It's ruined storytelling
    >>
    >>24021705
Seems like the idea that Primes are Multiversal Singularities from the Aligned Continuity is back. Optimus Prime dies he is either resurrected or reincarnates in another reality. Oh Optimus is also known as Convoy. Japanese shows included.

It has been established in Beast Wars when Sparks die they go to the Matrix/Allspsrk. Beast Machines establishes the Allsparks sends out Sparks so they can return with all the knowledge and wisdom gathered in a lifetime. In Optimus Primal's case he did die but was reborn in a new body. So reincarnation isn't so farfetched in lore.

In the lore of the Aligned Continuity Opimus Prime was always one of the Original Thirteen Primes. He reincarnated without any memories.

    >>24021642
Watched this in theaters last night and thought it was super confusing and bad. It should have been the allspark telling Optimus to never give up or something and be some kind of meta message to him and the audience, with the end being him being revived at the end of G1. Instead we got some ambiguous voice literally spouting incorrect lies about Optimus being the reason for all these things happening, which is insane. The part where Optimus says as such had me sitting in my chair like "ya Optimus, you are factually correct and this retarded voice is factually incorrect" lmao. Megatron is more to blame for everything bad happening more than Prime is in basically every timeline. Optimus giving up at the end was just bizarre. They shoulda pulled this short and reworked it after Peter Cullen died because it's an absolutely bizarre message on the back of his death

The Skybound comics do this to a ridiculous degree, and they needlessly did this with the recent netflix series. It's always a waste of time because it doesn't make sense. Optimus stood up to fight Megatron because Megatron very quickly became a tyrant who wanted to kill all the autobots. Someone had to stand up and fight him. Optimus is in no part responsible for the war being anything other than just a naked slaughter of autobots but the decepticons, so it's retarded to throw blame on him. The mysterious voice also said that Optimus was fighting a war with no end, which is extremely stupid because in G1 it DID end, very explicitly. Beast Wars' history expressly lays out that the Autobots win the great war and there is a long time of peace afterwards. Everything remains relatively chill until BW Megatron shows back up on Cybertron and takes over, but everything before that was chill and that's all due to Optimus. The cybertronians, as humans are never mentioned, presumably outlive the human species in a time of peace lmao. I could keep going but it's just totally insane that this is the angle they tried to pull when it does not make any sense at all, especially when the end of the short shows Megatron getting the matrix and there was even a flash before that showing him with it ruling over Cybertron, so Megatron just goes completely unaddressed and wins. Stupid short stupid idea stupid ending for Peter Cullen's career. They shoulda pulled it or reworked it

This also could’ve been a pilot for a new proposal series but at this point it’s unlikely, I think it should’ve been rewritten for a more positive message, don’t think it’s a RUINED FOREVER situation but in all honesty the writers weren’t aware this was gonna be Peter’s last time voicing the character
    >>
    >>24021920
Ya I don't think it's RUINED FOREVER at all, it's just a stupid and borderline spiteful message to end on. Coincidentally spiteful, but spiteful nonetheless

A considerable amount of modern writers have a "gray area" problem. They want to tell stories where the morality is gray, the characters are complex and nothing is quite black and white.
Issue is, the way they do it is by tearing down heroes, treating villains like victims and generally murking the waters by disguising stupid decisions as character flaws. They take shortcuts instead of actually writing compelling stories.
    >>
The problem is for some reason Hasbro started listening to tiny number of malding Gen Xers who have been whining about TF:TM killing Optimus for decades they took everything about Hot Rod and Rodimus as a character and just applied that to everyone else. The poor sod can't even be in the short that got added on to his own movie.

    >>24021940
These "modern writers" are just the people who grew up with BTAS, which did everything to take the boomer comics ideas of "Oh ho ho! This Clock King guy is just crazy!" and made them all sad victims of circumstance.
    >>
The message of the short doesn't even make sense. It's being delivered right after Optimus accepts his death. Also the music and sound design sucked. What does everything have the same spooky ambiance and french horns now?

To be fair very few people liked Hot Rod/Rodimus even back in the 80s. There's a reason they brought Optimus back and even then the show was pulled not long after.

I will admit that I don't remember much of that series, but in those circumstances I don't think the villains did much of anything that resulted in people getting maimed or straight up dying like how Megatron and the other Decepticons ended up doing completely intentionally. Having antagonists with sad circumstances around them being antagonists is fine, even in stories where they are doing vile, evil things, but you cannot forget that that does not mean they are excused from taking responsibility for said actions, nor that the protagonists are wrong for opposing them and their actions.

Actually it does. The One said Optimus will die for the Autobots again. Prime did die again in Dark Awakening. He was also called Convoy so Headmasters anime is acknowledged as he died also there to restore the Matrix.

The director explaining the Optimus Prime Awakening short.
    >>
    >>24021642
I genuinely thought this short was building up to where Optimus Prime would give the middle finger to the Allspark, and tell the Allspark that he never gives up. That he protects the innocent and stands up to tyranny no matter what. Then the Allspark would say you passed the test and congratulate Optimus.

But nope. Just a shitty ending that sucks.
    >>
    >>24021642
The entire thing felt like a student film with a massive budget. Like a student director that wants to prove to everyone that he can make "le serious movies" even though it's a cartoon. So he subverts audience expectations and deconstructs Optimus, and says Optimus is the tue villain. Reminds me of what they did to Luke Skywalker. Terrible.

    >>24023790
This Director worked for Lucasfilm. No wonder this short is so badly written. No wonder they tried to make Optimus into the villain. Typical Lucasfilm.
    >>
    >>24023790
Just checked this guy's imdb. He's never Directed anything before. He's only worked in the special effects and graphics department. Of all people, why did Hasbro trust a total noob with such an important short movie? They couldn't find another Director to handle it? Someone with more experience.
    >>
    >>24023883
Most likely they didn't expect the short would really matter much, being a cheap cash in for the films rerelease. They didn't count on Cullen dying and this being his last performance ever
    >>
    >>24023790
So basically this guy doesn't have a clue and had no clear idea on the story he wanted to tell
    >>
is this what the kids call a "humiliation ritual"?
    >>
    >>24023790
About what I expected, a mess. Weirdly, the short only works in a very specific context of Japanese G1, since he not only is tested in a similar way, he actually manages to unite both factions and become friends with a reformed Megatron, and if it's confirmed, eventually retiring to help out in the Galaxy Force universe and dying of old age there.
    >>
    >>24021642
I think the ending was meant to be dramatic irony
Optimus passes onto enlightenment but Megatron is stuck attached to a Matrix he can't even use

    >>24021802
    >>24021819

    >>
How would you have done the film? I would have framed it from the perspective of how a father would feel leaving his family behind. Are they ready? Can they get by without me? And then Primus or whatever shows him a montage of the conflict that came before the great war, and all the conflicts that will come afterward, obviously being all the various decepticon leaders and factions that will come about, showing the battle never ends. And then Primus shows him all the heroes who will rise up in his stead, guys like Chromedome, Spike becoming Fortress Maximus, Ginrai, Star Saber, Dai Atlas, The beast convoys, and finally Unicron and the silohuette of Rodimus Prime about to open the Matrix, and then Optimus passes on knowing that he paved the path for them to follow, confident they can go on without him. Then as he transforms into a truck and drives off into robot heaven, a short montage of Optimus Prime's life with moments we never saw in the show, like officiating Spike and Carly's wedding, going fishing with Daniel, and Hotrod, having a drink with Kup and Ironhide, before driving into the light.
    >>
    >>24024818
That sounds cool but I get why Prime wasn't given solid concrete confirmation that his legacy will inspire
Part of passing on is having faith in the people around you even if you can't see the future to be sure
If he knew for certain it wouldn't be faith and grappling with that uncertainty is just part of humanity

Yeah that... was kinda hard to read as a positive thing.
Also it was weird that they had a big frame by frame reenactment of Hotrod accidentally getting Prime killed... but it was Bumblebee and he actually saved prime instead? What's that supposed to mean?
    >>
    >>24021642
I don't get what this is trying to say. I kinda understood the initial allusions to an eternal cycle, but likening each cycle to another series makes it seem like the 'cycle' Is the Transformers brand itself. A Hasbro short trying to tell us the cycle needs to end is kind of strange.
Also it just seems strange to me that it's presented as if It's entirely in Prime's court to end the cycle. As if he's the only one with the responsibility to give up the fight. If all the Cybertronians don't reach this conclusion together, won't the cycle simply continue without Prime being there?
That's a facetious question by the way, we already know the answer to that.
    >>
    >>24024839
But he chooses to not leave the matrix to anyone at the end.
What you're describing is his death in the original movie, passing the matrix on as a symbol of his legacy without knowing for sure who was most suited to bear the torch.
In this he just kind of... Drops the matrix into what appears to be a molten pit then fucks off.
    >>
    >>24029468
Modern writers for Transformers don't know how or are unable to end the Great War with a specific side winning. Realistically either the autobots or decepticons would lose. But they don't want to do that.

So these feminine writers opt for vague and nonsensical stories to end the Great War. Like a galaxy threat that must unite the autobots and decepticons. Or some weird transformer deity that comes from another dimension that controls zombies or slaves. Basically any story they can think of to avoid choosing a realistic ending to the Great War.

They also want to "deconstruct" Optimus like they did to Luke Skywalker from Star Wars. In their eyes, Optimus is really evil and Megatron is just a misunderstood hero. Typical 2010s deconstruction slop.

I'm glad the comments in the video are roasting this Director.

It's not even that, which is why I posted the picture of Kaifun. It's such a heavy focus on "ALL fighting is BAD, there is NEVER a good reason to fight!" it sounds like the sort of thing that would come out of his mouth. And if you didn't know, Kaifun's anti-war and anti-fighting stance was intentionally obnoxious and ridiculous with little reason ever given for his stance beyond "he just is".
    >>
I can already envision YouTube essayists attempting to spin this Awakenimg short into some heartfelt send-off for Peter Cullen.
But based on what we actually know regarding the production of this short, it's pretty clear it's just incidental timing.
So without his passing in mind, why did Hasbro randomly make a short about Optimus Prime's soul accepting perma-death and deciding to not pass his legacy (the matrix) on? It almost reads as some embittered oldhead trying to tell the audience that it's time for Transformers itself to end.
Why now, when they were supposedly doing their "apology tour"?

    >but it was Bumblebee and he actually saved prime instead? What's that supposed to mean?

I literally felt like it another moment to hate on Hot Rod. Literally, I feel like they're trying to say 'Well if Bumblebee was there, Prime wouldn't have died'. Literally, it's like that one what-if comic.

Hot Rod just can't catch a break.

It's also got that classic "look we know you're only here for the pre-movie G1 stuff" myopia to it. The movie cast shows up to recreate the Optimus dies scene (except Daniel who I guess had better things to do tonight than cry), but after that it's all the same dorks as usual. Never mind the actual narrative flying in the face of what we just saw prior since it's riding on the coattails of the movie.
    >"Optimus, you must learn to let go and accept death!"
    >said to guy who literally told his loved ones not to grieve that he was dying.
Guess he really meant to say "do not grieve, I'm going to demand weird afterlife god to bring me back ASAP then we can shove Megatron's fusion cannon right up his ass"
    >>

It's funny cause in their attempt to get one over Hot Rod, they actually short changed Optimus.
The way the original scene in '86 movie played out, the implication seemed to be that Optimus would have had things under control if Hot Rod had not interfered.
In this iteration it just looks like Megatron would have killed Optimus if Bumblebee didn't help.

    >>

This premiering close to Peter Cullen's passing is the bad timing.

Like someone else said, Hot Rod aside, having Bumblebee save Prime actually makes Prime look worse, like he's not enough to beat Megatron. In the original movie he had it under control until Hot Rod gave Megatron an opening.
The whole short also just feels like a crappy extension of Prime's farewell in the movie, which was fine as is.
