What are your thoughts on the story, characters and mecha designs of The Big O? You have not lost your Memory of it, have you?
    >>

    >>
    It is good.
    >>
Mechs are ok, the episodic plots are good, the overarching plot is shite.
    >>

There should have been a fifth unit that was designed to protect the simulation itself, like an administrator.
Would have been a great opportunity to have a Space-themed Big
    >>
Cool show. Kinda dumb 2nd season, just kinda. Never fully explained why they lived in the simulation like Ergo Proxy did.

Crazy Turner had so much pull they can get Sunrise and Production IG to make shows.
    >>
I wish the ending wasn't literally "uh...it's all a metaphor i guess". I like it a lot, I still hunger for more. I suspect had it kept going there would have been some pretty wild power-creep with how Big-O seemed to simply manifest mecha-magic powers over time. But the world that had been set up was good, one of the few vague-lore settings where it works because its focus is more on themes, sub-plots and cool retro-styled robots with a bit of silliness here and there.

The entire soundtrack is S-tier and the opening of the second season picking up right at the end of the first was great. It's also the main reason why the Ignition video still fuckin slaps.

It was literally just them throwing money at sunrise to make another season since the anime gained so much traction in america. Banrise wanted the series to be a hit so it was a no brainer and jason demarco from adult swim was a huge otaku of the worst kind who liked the show. I also read through some older materials a while back from the home releases and apparently sunrise flip flopped back and forth on how many episodes they wanted but ended up settling on 13. Katayama I think was the only one who wanted it to be and endless series because I can't find any interviews of konaka and the other staff saying the same.
    >>
    >>23986070
Schwarzwald is one of my favorite anime characters of all time. I really want a good Big Duo figure that isn't a kit because I'm a babby when it comes to plamo. A figure of Schwarzwald would be great too.
    >>
    >>23986321
Moderoid is finally giving us a big duo kit, if we're lucky we'll probably get a schwarzwald 3rd party resin kit down the line.
    >>
    >>23986326
    I specifically stated I didn't want a kit...
    >>
    >>23986347
There's not many other options unless you want to buy the old bandai anime collection figures which a probably going to go for a premium and are like 20+ years old anyway. The moderoid kits aren't even that hard to assemble and you can literally just snap them together.
    >>
    >>23986184
    >It was literally just them throwing money at sunrise to make another season since the anime gained so much traction in america.
yeah Big O was sorta weird in how USA went nuts for it, execs noticed, then sorta just shat the bed for Tim And Eric or whatever crap
I remember being at Megacon for the debut of the dub, and holy shit a comic book con that was rapidly falling to the weeb invasion, and you drop BTAS But It's Also Bebop they could have just put a tip jar outside of the room and funded five seasons
    >>
    >>23986378
Whoever took over CN fucked up massively and it has never recovered. Obvious nepotism for a bunch of no-talent relations who wanted to be "creatives" instead of get a real job
    >>
    >>23986387
I'm looking forward to that Robot Chicken special as a series finale for [as]
Smiling Friends was really nice to see one more time what things used to be, but it's yeah done.
    >>
    >>23986378
It was only funded for an additional season, nothing else was planned beyond that. Big O aired at a weird time were cartoon network was testing the waters with what was going to stick and what wasn't for the toonami and adult swim blocs. DBZ had just started to take off and by the time season 2 of big o finally aired in 03 everyone was going crazy for battle shonen which killed any hype around season 2 reducing it to only having a niche audience.
    >>
    >>23986397
yeah I was at... what's the big Atlanta con, Dragoncon? but yeah I hustled a free ride through it the year S2 got cancelled and somebody had flyers that were all YOU ARE A TOMATO trying to get a season 3 off the ground

I still hold out hope for a season 3.
    >>
    >>23986378
I've heard a few times that multiple AS major players were very resentful that anime kept blowing their original projects out of the water, and there were very few that they actually liked. FLCL and Big O being the most notable, which is why there was all those weird bad FLCL rebootquels later that kept getting funded beyond any reasonable measure.

Kind of a classic problem that western suits and studios were genuinely confused that kids wanted to watch two cool guys try to kill each other and not another cartoon about a guy with a silly voice not moving much.

    >>
Why doesn't the military or the police have any Megadeus mechs? They're completely useless and have to rely on Roger every time. Why is it that only the bad guy of the week has a Megadeus?
    >>
    >>23986825
    >Why doesn't the military or the police have batmobile?
    >>
    >>23986830
But every other bad guy has one too. Surely they could have built at least a couple?
    >>
    >>23986440
I believe it. The big players who did the live comedies were probably nepotism acts.
    >>
    >>23986825
Because they're just extras in Roger's story
    >>
    >>23987079
Do you believe Roger was the 2nd in command of the organization that created the simulation? Rosewater was simply the creator's son? Why is everything set up to support Roger?

So much to think about in the show.
    >>
    >>23987129
    Roger is just an actor.
    >>
    >>23986070
It took me 20 years to realize that Big Duo's face is half black/half white. I always thought it was just stylish shadowing. Like O and Fau have half their faces shadowed in that very pic!
    >>
    >>23986825
It's MOTW, that's how it's supposed to be. MC has a super powerful robot that no one else has access to and uses it to save the day.
    >>
    >>23986825
The Megadeuses (Megadeii?) are extremely rare and mysterious in the setting, that's why the military police doesn't have even one.
    >>
    >>23987191
Same here. I realized that about five years ago after I saw one of the figures of Big Duo and wondered if the designers made a mistake. The black on Big Duo's face is so dark as to resemble heavy shadows, but when I went back to check, the "shading pattern" was always consistent.
    >>
It's been a long time since I've seen it, but it was definitely one of my favorites back in the day. I'm at the point where I'm not really watching anything new anymore, so maybe I'll give it a rewatch soon.

I feel like I'm in the minority but I loved the plot stuff in season 2 a lot. I love weird "Twin Peaks" stuff in general. (I don't know what to call it.) It was still ambiguous enough to be really compelling. The only problem was the downgrade in animation/style quality from hand drawn to digital.
    >>
    >>23986825
They're supposed to be like the military in a kaiju movie plus Gordon/cops in Batman and ineffectual against the real villain. Maybe it would have fit if they had real robot like mecha that always got their asses kicked.

I loved season 2 but I think it would be hilarious and fitting if they just completely ignored it and went along with their plans to make it like a western serialized show again. To bad it didnt get popular enough for that to happen.

I feel almost the same way for Twin Peaks. I wish they never had to reveal Laura's killer but I love how weird it got. Big O Season 3 The Return being full Twin Peaks the Return would he equally enjoyable to me.

2nd season is a drastic downgrade compared to the previous season due to being produced by CN and Toonami, and having vital plot points crammed into what was originally intended to be revealed over 3 seasons

With how shit revivals are these days I'd we're pretty much dodging a bullet. I know konaka and some of the other staff want to come back to the series for another season but with how sunrise these days handles their projects I doubt it would be any better than the first two seasons. Plus I don't see them unfucking that ending in any conceivable way possible without it turning into a narrative mess.

As much as /m/ likes to deny it modern day sunrise is no longer capable of making good animation anymore. Even if they tried to stick to traditional 2D there's still going to be CG spliced in where they need to cut corners which always looks really jarring.

He's kiiiinda right but not really. It did underperform in Japan during its first airing because it was exclusive to a premium channel that had just launched at the time, so barely anyone was able to watch it or even knew it existed. But it's be rebroadcast a few times since then and has done well every time.
    >>
    >>23994969
I would argue that we wouldn't have gotten Moderoid Big O a couple years back if there wasn't at least some demand for merch in Japan. It's definitely still more popular in the West, but saying Japan "doesn't give a shit" is a bit far.

Also just had a thought that would probabaly just make everyone mad. Season 3 could be like the Dark City (1998) Since everyone was implied to be actors have everyone appear in totally different roles. Now Dorothy is the Pilot of Big O and Beck is her Butler or some shit. And they all start to unravel more mysteries (except not really)and their original roles. Dark City is heavily noir inspired and takes place in an isolated city too and scifi.

Or go with the Moebius influence and have them explore the ruined world outside the city.

or none of this just make more of what made season 1 good I dont care I just love big o

Dawg... it even matches up with the shadows on Roger
They should have used a dark gray instead of the same black they used for shadowing

She's not, the "real" angels last name is rosewater. In paradigm she's just some mysterious woman who keeps crossing paths with roger. Theoretically she shares the last name with vera since it was implied she was her mother but that kind of goes out the window later in season 2 for obvious reasons. I like to think alex is just another self insert because angel probably sees herself as the god of paradigm since she is the one who "writes" the story.

    >in a Metropolis like world rich corporations control everything
    >robot and androids are toys of the rich like Maschinenmensch and R Dorothy
    >the rich corporations begin to fight
    >eventually building huge living robots to fight their wars
    >ended up wiping out 99.99999% of humanity and making earth a huge desert
    >robots built domes for the remaining humans but they all died out because the cycle just started all over again
    >robots preserved the remaining human minds in probably it's own memories
    >running scenarios or shows based on how humans lived before they all died out
    >Angel is one of the minds that kept the 40 cycle going
    >always ends in tragedy
    >she wanted to just end whatever remains of human thought but Roger negotiated that these memories meant something at least to the robots
    >Dorothy is a representation of the robots and for millenia has tried to understand humanity's drive
That's pretty much my understanding of the ending.

    >>24038258
In official materials they say domes and the desert happened because of falling meteorites, like that one episode where Roger punches one. But I don't have a source so take that with a grain of salt.

The problem with that is that the "meteorite" that Roger punched was a giant stage light.

    >>
    >>24007320
So Roger is being illuminated from his back with a shadow on the end of his left arm and upper left side of his chest. That's implying the light is coming from below and to the right illumining primarily the check on the right side of the mech and explaining why its left (right in the picture) eye and right (left in the picture) cheek are in shadow.

It's a great show with a lot of fun action, but I think the plot overcomplicates things. The whole conspiracy of memories n' shit is interesting enough on its own, but then the whole world being a stage or fake or whether it's a metaphor or not is just a bit much.
    >>
    >>23986070
I thought the mystery of BiG O was a big draw for the show, the event that left everyone with no memories of the past, yet humanity carried on was compelling, effecting every episode in series but by end of season 2 I thought it was bullshit with the great reveal of the event in question being bigger than it should have been to the point of bullshit.

The problems started as soon as other writers in the latter half of season 1 like Keiichi Hasegawa started to insert more esoteric plots and introduced new "mysteries". They introduced concepts like Metropolis and the Tomatoes that weren't in the original concept. Katayama and Konaka originally just thought of the whole "40 years ago" thing as just a setting for an episodic adventure. Konaka said he regretted not writing the last episode himself and admitted he wrote Season 2 the way he did just find to a way to answer the mysteries set up by someone else. Episode 14 though was an idea Katayama had in his head for a while, even before season 2.

That's always going to be an issue when multiple writers are involved. You're pretty much picking up where someone left off and makes it hard to tell a coherent story.

It seems self inflicted though on the account of Konaka coping for a second season but not really preparing for when it actually happened

    >Was the ending of Episode 13 really intended to set up the next one?

    >Konaka: Of course, we were thinking about the next one, but at the time, there was no guarantee or assurance that we’d be able to make it. So, regarding that ending, as the story editor, I was supposed to write the finale myself, but I ended up passing that responsibility on to Mr. Hasegawa—which was also a way of signaling that I didn’t want the story to end there. Mr. Hasegawa really understood that sentiment, and whereas normally we would have provided some kind of resolution for the series, he actually chose to add more mystery instead (laughs). That’s why I ended up having a hard time with it later on
