Either we are alone in the Universe or we are not. Both are equally terrifying
>>25624537Back to /tv/ jeet
>>25624537>we>alone???
>>25624537For me the scary part about the Fermi paradox is the overwhelming silence of the universe. If there even was life out there, all empirical evidence suggests that it has monumentally failed to become an interplanetary species. It could very well be that by the time a species is capable of interstellar travel and space colonisation, it has already developed weapons of mass destruction and wiped itself clean off the map. Realistically, what are the chances we don’t do the same?
>>25624617not to sound racist or anthing but the future is brown, and browns arent tech savvy
>>25624628We’ve already invented enough nuclear firepower to scorch the entire surface of the planet a hundred times over, we don’t need the jeets to reinvent the h-bomb. If anything it’s even more concerning that these will be the future people responsible for the nuclear codes
>>25624630We are not the ones who have dropped nuclear weapons on civilian populations
>>25624637I don’t think you quite understand the stakes of MAD. Doesn’t matter if it’s us or them, once the first shot is fired we’re all fucked.>weSAARS DO NOT REDEEM THE (NUCLEAR) CODE
>>25624537For all intents and purpose, we are alone. There's likely someone else out there, but why would they bother with us? How often do you find yourself meddling in the affairs of ants?
>>25624537no? we are neither alone nor not alone in the universe. what the hell are you talking about
>>25624537not really. being alone is way more terrifying because that implies that something extremely exceptional happened on this planet out of all the nearly infinite planets and that it may actually be just a simulation
>>25624680There are lots of various explanations for why we’re alone in the universe, and they’re mostly all scary to think about, but being in a simulation is a pretty low-order concern. For me, the most worrying is that we’re an incredibly late-forming species towards the end of the lifespan of the universe, when all other lifeforms and civilisations have gone extinct, or maybe the universe has expanded so much that the distance between us all has become utterly incommensurable. We could just as equally be very early and other species have yet to develop into space-faring civilisations, though that’s somehow less concerning.
>>25624537When we die, we either stop existing or continue existing forever. Both are equally terrifying.
>>25624537I find it hard to believe that there is absolutely no other life in the whole entire universe, the universe is really big you know, there atleast some other planet with life
>>25624617or for any worthwhile species, it realized it has everything it needs on its own planet and doesn't bother to venture into the cold desolate void because what's the fucking point? also to this anon's point >>25624628 on the contrary if browns inherit the planet then its destruction is ensured.
>>25624537The imaginary fears of a midwit. I believe in life on other planets, and even believe aliens have visited us. But even if they don't exist, how does that personally affect me?
>>25624863>it realized it has everything it needs on its own planet and doesn't bother to venture into the cold desolate void because what's the fucking point? You could make the same case for the colonisation of the West Indies, Australia, Africa, etc.. There was no real need for western civilisation to become international, to risk countless lives on expanding the frontier. And yet we did it anyway, because we wanted to, because we sought an answer to the question of “what’s really out there?”. Unless you believe the resources we gained from these places were a necessity, in which case, is it not plausible that the same could apply for planets too?
>>25624537I am the universe
>>25624617It's more like space exploration is 1. not feasible and 2. not beneficial We can barely do a manned mission to the moon and I'm sure a manned mission to mars is impossible (unless we're fully expecting those men to die out there, in which case, maybe it's possible). There is not going to be some magical new technology that breaks the laws of thermodynamics. There will not be some magical new fuel source discovered that is far more efficient than what we've already discovered. There will be no easy way to terraform a planet. There will be no way to refuel or gather more resources in space. Technology has come as far as it will ever come and any further progress will be marginal (marginal being a massive exaggeration, as it will likely not matter at all).
>>25625467>Technology has come as far as it will ever comelol
>>25625492The fact that there was nonstop progress throughout the 19th to 21st centuries does not mean that the progress will keep going. You cannot break the laws of thermodynamics. Computer chips cannot get smaller or more efficient. All of the "progress" made post-2016 is non-progress meant to deceive retards like you. No, we will not be driving around in those fake ass "flying" "cars" you saw in a demo you mental toddler. You are some redditbrained freak that thinks that "progress" works like pic related.
>>25625467>>25625535I mean sure, we’re probably due a technological dark age sooner or later. On a long enough timeline, however, I’m not so sure. I think it’s all too easy to claim that scientific progress has stalled until we make the next big breakthrough that few could have seen coming. That's if we don’t nuke ourselves into oblivion before we even have the chance. I’m not saying it’s guaranteed, in fact I’m fairly confident we won’t ever become a type 2 civilisation, let alone type 3. The stargazers can still dream though
>>25625535>You cannot break the laws of thermodynamics. Yeah? Says who?
I wonder to what extent we would worry less about binaries if everyone just had a cloaca.
>>25625588Invertebrate reproduction is basically just scissoring. If there is no binary then everything is female
>>25624537the existence of the universe is objectively supernatural. The materials of the universe existing outside of time doesn't make any sense at all. A God existing outside of time makes sense.
>>25625535>That imageThe most midwit picture ever made
>>25625535>All of the "progress" made post-2016 is non-progressDo you see how you immediately contradict yourself
>>25624617There are a lot of other more plausible and much less cliched explanations for why we haven’t found evidence of an interstellar civilization>Interstellar expansion is impossible>Interstellar expansion is unviable, like >>25625467 already mentioned>Technology is itself unviable and sooner or later a planetary civilization realizes that it has wasted all resources necessary for industry that were only present on its home planet.
>>25624537>equally terrifyingNot even close. If we are alone, then self correction is the only obstacle. If we are not alone, then we have known unknowns as well as unknown unknowns ahead of us in additional self correction.>>25624617>fermi paradoxONLY a paradox if you accept the BS of Drake and/or make axioms about life. It's less of a paradox and more of a fairy tale ghost story with a lot of "if-then" claims that have no evidence.
>>25624537>meet aliens>they're chill
>>25625535Picrel is blatantly false and ignores that "dark ages" were caused by the downfall of Rome. Rulers had to have their own laws read to them by scribes. The important writings that exist today were preserved by Christian monasteries. Imagine believing in the myth of progress. We are progressing towards what? A higher entropy state? This is the downfall of civilization.
NASA has managed a manned mission to the moon on 0.3% of US federal spending in 2026. Any real attempts at colonising anything outside our atmosphere will have to come after the planet is under the rule of a single government that's unconcerned with geopolitics , money and wars back home. And yeah, that's not happening without at least a bit of a nuclear holocaust shoving the humam civilisation to the brink of extinction.
>>25624537>>25624617This shit must hit different when you're an undergrad.
