For Harry Potter generally and to soak up /tv/ Malfoid rejects in particular.

Something I'm curious about; how does /lit/ feel about the Ron/Hermoine romance subplot? Good? Bad? Salvageable?

And what makes a good romance subplot for a story like this?

    >Good romance subplot
If it's believable and the characters written have good chemistry.
    Ron and Hermione do.
    Harry and Malfoid do.
Ginny is just exists in the background and then she's suddenly with Harry. That's bad subplot
    >>
I remember it being out of nowhere and not feeling like a natural progression for the characters. Although I last read a Harry Potter book 19 years ago when I was not even a teenager yet, so my opinions may not be factual

Can someone fill me in on this whole Malfoid trend? She looks and acts almost the same as Android 18 from Dragon Ball.

Malfoid is canon though. Penned by the great Rowling herself, a poignant tale about love and redemption.
If we were talking about fanfics, it'd be about that fujo genderbend "Draco" that's popular in certain circles

It works because it's not Harry and Ginny I guess.

Just to figure out what you're asking, are you asking about Ron and Hermione's chemistry as a couple or are you asking about whether there was any actual indication that that was the direction they were going?

I'm mainly interested in your sense of the chemistry.

Rowling wrote in the hookup eventually anyway so the setup is neither here nor there, of course it's written in, the question is whether it FEELS right.

Bit of a ramble but ah well.
Their relationship is told from Harry's POV and his interpretation of things, so you have to make do with that.

Ron and Hermione do have good chemistry, they'd bicker and fight but it usually wasn't too serious, they're more than willing to make up, witnessed by Harry or inferred by the reader if it happens offscreen. But then there'd be also instances of them properly fighting and holding grudges, like with the Scabbers/Crookshanks situation. Obviously exacerbated by the two teenagers, teenagers being immature, selfish and emotional little cretins they are. But again, that wouldn't break the friendship and budding romance cos they'd get the fuck over it. Always viewed the bickering as them taking the words more personally, considering it's from someone they're rather fond of.

The more positive interactions show that Ron and Hermione care a lot more about the other's respective opinions than Harry's. Ron goes and compliments Hermione or says she's right, she'd be heaps pleased, Hermione admits Ron is right or being sensible and he's happy about it. Lot more noticeable from book 3 onwards really.

Just a slow shift really, matching them as they developed. Very sweet, very youthful. Fucking hate Hermione btw fwiw.

Harry and Ginny on the other hand, had fuck all of that. Fucking hated Cho as well, got about as much substance as a wet fart.

It's a manga/anime archetype, possibly Japanese literature in general?
Anyways, we have a generation of weeaboos now entirely grown on harem anime. And an older generation who converted due to their arrested development. Malfoid, to them, is like a missing piece of a puzzle that, and I really do quote, "fixes" the story written by Rowling. Which is absurd in numerous ways.

    Well I just wanted to make sure I understood you adequately, so if the rephrasing rings true, I suppose I have. I guess I should be honest that I'm planning my own Malfoid rewrite and I'm very seriously considering writing that romance out, but my two concerns are;
    >How upset would people be if that's not in there anymore?
    >Would it feel unnatural to break that up?

I don't think it affects the plot at all since Harry, Ron and Hermoine are all battle buddies regardless of whether any of them are boning each other or not, no motivation is lost, so it's an aesthetic choice, and a difficult one.

I have a few things in mind for it that I don't really want to write out until I'm writing them out, if you know what I mean.

Oh and also obviously there's no point to a Malfoid fic with no Malfoid romance, so not that. I meant taking out Ron/Hermoine.
    >>
    >>25624846
You do you. I'd imagine you'd be met with some (proper) outrage over Ron and Hermione.
If you do, I'd either tone down the "old married couple" vibe of the two or use one of the canonical big fights they had and write it so they just never recovered from it completely. They're still friends but the implicit romantic subtext isn't there anymore.

That's pretty good, since it nips it in the bud real early. There's not much romantic angle (to my memory) until book 4 anyway. I'll just have to review the later books and make sure none of the romantic fights lead to any crucial plot points.

The average person doesn't even read anything outside of Google AI summaries and social media posts, anymore.
People who read fanfiction written for 14 year old horny girls have been promoted to "intellectual elite" in relation to falling book reading rates.

malfoid is a cringe tranny meme, see malfoy despite being a tendentiously written villain still has certain respectable traits, like he is ambitious and concerned with social stature.

There's a touch of it in book 3, off the top of my head. Should be easily smoothed over though.

In one of the previous threads about Malfoid someone suggested giving pure blooded wizards some power, like AoT, which was objected because that would give room for racist interpretations of the work. The more I think about it the less sense it makes; the author isn't obligated to narrow all possible interpretations to match the most popular one. Furthermore, even if Malfoy had inheritated his powers, that doesn't necessarily favors racist interpretations unless you have deep-rooted eugenic ideas, like "X kills Y cuz Y is dumb. There's proof that Y was dumber. Therefore X was right to kill him?!" WTF so what if the oppressed group has less powerful genetics? That doesn't change a thing

I'm not fully committed yet, but I think it'll be pair off with others. Although I think it'll be quite different plans for each of them.

I don't want to discuss much more of it, I think talking about writing kills the spirit of writing. What drives you is the urge to get it out of your head.

I think there's something sweet with Ginny Weasley having a super crush on Harry, sorta tried getting over it by dating Dean, then still getting Harry in the end.
It could be argued that, on a psychological level, Harry needed to be "admired/adored" in the way that Ginny admired him. Hermione liked Harry, but didn't "worship" him the way many in the wizarding world did.
Even though Harry is old blood from the wizarding world (from his father's side, though his from his mother he gets Muggle blood), he still largely grew up thinking he was a Muggle, living as a Muggle lived. Being paired with Ginny mirrors the situation Ronald and Hermione had, an old wizard blood family (Ronald) paired with a Muggle.
The union through marriage/love of Muggle and Wizard is a nice theme, on par with other themes in Rowling's world. Voldemort and the Death Eaters had their fair share of Muggle blood, but it was always thought of as shameful, something that could be overlooked or hidden, but never something you'd marry into willingly. The union of Muggle and Wizard in the Death Eater community was not motivated by love.

Thematically, Harry getting with Ginny, and Ron with Hermione, makes sense, even if Rowling didn't intend it to be that way. A happy accident.
    >>
    >>25625204
What you seem to be missing is the historical intercontextuality upon which Rowling based the relationship of pureblood wizards and non-purebloods.

Its the Old nobility (sword nobility) vs the new nobility (robe nobility). Its the conflict between the rising bourgeois against le evil aristocracy. Again, this makes perfect sense taking into consideration Rowling is a liberal white woman.

What was the standard to be considered old nobility? It was three generations and one hundred years. What is the standard upon which you are considered a Pureblood wizard? pretty much the same thing but Rowling couldn't help but make pureblood wizards the equals of Mudbloods meaning the wizard racism in Harry Potter doesn't actually make sense but she needed to make someone into a bad guy.
    >>
    >>25625251
I have wondered if the understanding of Mudblood vs Pureblood being a race allegory is more of an American thing, since we dispensed with the idea of class early on but race sits in a prominent place in our minds; and to us, a "mud" person evokes a very different image. I'm sure Brits understood it more like classism than racism.
    >>
    >>25625259
I am from Argentina and 99% of people would interpret it that way too, it is inevitable due to the times we live in, when Rowling wrote the books it might have been more ambiguous but in my opinion at least it is 100% the old nobility wanting to gatekeep their wizard powers from everyone else. I guess its like a political struggle, a la french revolution.
    >>
    >>25625251
if when you translate wizards into old/sword nobility, and muggles into "robe" nobility, the themes still work. Historically, it was quite common for old nobility to marry into non sword-blood families, usually for the money.

Although even if you're correct about Rowling deliberately intending for pure blood wizards to be understood as "old sword nobility", the sheer logistics of trying to make Voldemort make any sense would fail. So he's a penniless orphan nobleman that somehow makes it big? Has no children but somehow "keeps coming back"?

But fine, let's pretend your theory is the intended Rowling meaning. So Hermione marries into Weasley nobility, an old name with little wealth, bringing with her a fortune made in dentistry by her skilled craftsman father. And Harry inherited his famous Potter fortune from his muggle mother, no doubt, since the wizard pure bloods throughout the books seem to have fizzled out their wealth (the Malfoys being the only notable exception to that rule).

And now we're faced with another reality, that Rowling seems to be saying that the wizard community actually REQUIRES new blood (i.e. Muggle blood) infusions since otherwise wizards run out of money and become quite useless. Hence why both the Dumbledore faction AND the Death Eater factions made unions with Muggles. But that the unions made out of love were stronger than those made purely from necessity.
    >>
    >>25623611
Ginny had a crush on Harry when she was 10. If the books came out today they'd say he groomed her
    >>
    >>25625338
I think any inconsistency in Voldemort doesn't really change anything, since Voldemort is a very "evil to be evil" kind of villain. The events of the story and his own monologues make it very clear that Voldemort doesn't really care about anything but Voldemort. He may make noises occasionally about purebloods or ruling the muggles, but his actions make it seem more like he just cares about ruling, period. She could've made him a pureblood, she decided not to despite that being the obvious move. He likes that feeling when he dominates someone, and that's all he's really motivated by.

I think Rowling intended him to be hypocritical that way so that he'd be a clear-cut villain with no moral depth. He's like the evil shade of what the purebloods would have to do, what they'd have to be like, if they wanted to actually enforce their ideals.
    >>
    >>25625375
    >she could have made him a pureblood
no, she made him a halfblood deliberately, to show that it doesn't matter whether you're pureblood or Muggle or half-n-half. Harry and Voldemort were both half-Muggle, the difference is that Harry was conceived in love.
That's the consistent theme Rowling keeps reiterating, that love is stronger than power-lust.
