Anyone here read "How to Read Donald Duck"?It's a 1971 Chilean analysis of Disney comics from an anti-imperialist Marxist perspective.I've been reading a lot of Cark Barks and Don Rosa Duck comics lately, and the stereotyping of indigenous cultures and glorification of capital do sour the stories at times. I feel Don Rosa did a great job injecting the heart back into Uncle Scrooge in his 'Life of Scrooge' series, in which he depicts his burning and pillaging of an African village as the most abhorrent deed in Barks's Scrooge's life - but even Rosa can't help himself but sing praises to Theodore Roosevelt multiple times in that same series.I think it's an interesting topic, especially now that Disney is banning some of Rosa's (and potentially Barks's?) stories from being reprinted. Thoughts?

>>25622638>from an anti-imperialist Marxist perspective
>>25622638>I've been reading a lot of Cark Barks and Don Rosa Duck comics lately, and the stereotyping of indigenous cultures and glorification of capital do sour the stories at times. It makes the stories more vibrant. Back then the world was more romantic, exotic, weird, unsanitized.
>>25622638I remember the part where the authors talk about cartoon duck genitals. IIRC Donald is asexual because he doesn't produce anything (hence he has nephews and not sons), he just steals everything of value from the Third World.Of course the irl duck genitals are a lot different. Ducks reproduce via evolutionary arms race of rape where males evolve ever more intricate corkscrew phalluses to rape the female ducks' ever more intricate and likewise constantly evolving labyrinth-shaped vaginas.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DDWwQZkNA1c
Also the book was burned by Pinochet
Its very amateur level compared to viewing Donald Duck as the New Deal Americanization it openly is.
>>25622638it's disappointing that the apex of Chilean literature post WW2 is bound to marxism by the throat, either for it or against it. it could tell so many more stories but lies flat at allende and pinochet and imperialism and america. critical analysis only strikes hard when it is novel and meaningful. this seems an almost simplistic level of analysis made a "martyr" the coup of allende...
>>25622638So this must be the predecessor of Youtube video essays
>>25622638>Disney is banning some of Rosa's (and potentially Barks's?) stories from being reprinted. This is the only interesting thing you wrote. Elaborate.
>>25622638any other good ideological critiques of children's media?
>>25622638I never understood this compulsive "need" of Marxists to take apart children's media and pretend its all evil and imperialist when they themselves so clearly want to imbue children's media with their own values and will gladly accept multi billion dollar media empire's extended hand to that end. It's kind of disgusting. Scrooge is never presented as a character that deserves lots of sympathy, he is the "Western" capitalist par excellence. As a child I liked him because he was driven into a single direction but somehow he had to always be pragmatic and compromise because life was never just about money. Yes the only reason he visits other countries and places is money but most other people never even left their own country while he always ventured forth, often to betray others but more often to betray himself. The reality is that they - Marxist aligned "thinkers" - only do this because geopolitics is much harder to analyse, cultures and languages are foreign from your own and imperialism as well as colonialism never work in a vacuum where it is merely the evil imperialist taking over a region while the colonized poors are the eternal victims. Ideology as a lens only truly works when you discard human reality and turn inward into creations of the mind and what better creation to turn to than those of childhood - comic books and cartoons - where supposedly everything is black and white (by design).

Ie comparing Trump to Voldemort or the Squad to the Avengers
everyone else>haha Donald Duck is awesomecommunists>YOU ARE LAUGHING AT DEAD MARXISTS YOU FUCKING CHUD
>>25624400By enjoying these comics, I'm laughing at dead Marxists? Haha Donald Duck is awesome
>>25624395Its clearly not "all" of them and it was not my point to ridicule them because if it had been then all of the right are equally if not more pathetic. I simply dislike the intellectual futility of taking apart children's entertainment which by necessity will have very clear cut morals.
>>25623840They suddenly got scared of Bombie (both in Barks's and Rosa's stories) and later forbade printing those stories unedited. They also forbade Fantagraphics from publishing the Barks story featuring characters from Dumbo and Song of the South.
>1971Thats hilarious. I thought the leftist obsession with critiquing childrens stories was a product of breadtube and the hyper feminised environment of the modern left (women in my experience are obsessed with cartoons and childrens media).
>>25624506>women in my experience are obsessed with cartoons and childrens mediaUnlike men? I think women are much more obsessed with social media desu, if anything men are far more obsessed with comics, cartoons and videogames than women ever were or ever will be.
>>25624503Good grief. Fortunate that I already have an unedited copy of the Barks Library book with that story.
>>25624565Grown women are the vast majority readers of YA fiction, i.e. children's books.
>>25624582Grown men are the vast majority of anime consumers, readers of comics, consumers of toys and collectibles, videogames and Marvel/DC movies (all of which are meant for children)
>>25624580You should check out what the Don Rosa Library has been selling for. Complete used sets frequently sold for $1500-2200.Though Fantagraphics recently announced a reprint for volumes 1-4 (which don't contain any stories banned by Disney), so prices for those first few volumes are likely to normalize a bit soon. There's been no confirmation that Carl Barks's story featuring Bombie is affected by the Disney ban. In his official Facebook page Don Rosa even speculated that it may not be Bombie's depiction at all that made Disney ban the stories from reprints, since they never stated a reason to him. It might just be the subject matter of "The Empire Builder From Calisota" being deemed unsuitable for a Disney comic. Since it's the climax of his entire Life of Scrooge series, it effectively means all 12 chapter can't be reprinted without completely gutting the narrative.
>>25624589You sound spooked and raped
>>25624682You sound like a massive faggot (very gay) who can't do anything but deflect when exposed to the truth.
i stick to barks i dont do rosa
>>25624699Rosa is in all respects a tryhard. Barks simply made funny, very expressive comic strips and created characters on the fly whenever he needed them. Rosa is like an old school redditor, obsessing over the lore of characters Barks simply created at will and out of nowhere just as he needed them. Rosa's art doesnt even come close to the charm that Barks added to his. There is such ease and casual joy in Barks whereas Rosa is so fucking rigid, everything is overly detailed, story wise and drawing wise. Rosa is like the Star wars extended universe authors, utterly incapable of originality and merely adding hollow props and more "background" lore to the work of a visionary. Its honestly kind of disgusting how derivative and unimaginative he is and how much he sucks Barks' cock.
>>25624565Well every girlfriend ive had has been into disney and cartoons, whereas i always preferred live action films. I guess ypure right some m3n ar3 into anime, ive never been into it
>>25624717I like both Barks and Rosa
>>25624589Yes? What's your point? I'm trying to explain to you what Anon was most likely referring to.
>>25624614Wait, what?Disney are effectively banning the Life of Scrooge from sale? I mean, I loathe it for turning Barks' stories into material for a bunch of treacly, maudlin mischaracterization of Scrooge, but wasn't it the best-selling Donald comic since decades? Isn't it one of their flagship books?
>>25624717>Its honestly kind of disgusting how derivative and unimaginative he is and how much he sucks Barks' cock. The worst part isn't this, the worst part is that he has fan's disease in the worst way and has a headcanon interpretation of Scrooge which is absolutely nowhere to be found in the original Barks stories he claims to be a fan of.
>>25624720Amazing statement, thank you for this valuable contribution, desu your gfs were most likely post-op trannies because my gfs didnt really watch cartoons, its a male thing. Girls scroll instagram and tiktok.
>>25624742All of them do this. Fans are cancerous. Enjoyer > fan, every single time.
>>25624740Disney banned publishers from reprinting two of his stories in 2023 without giving a reason beyond "Commitment to Diversity and Inclusion". One of the affected stories is the climax of his Life of Scrooge series, effectively rendering the entire book unfit for reprints. Here's what Rosa posted on Facebook a few weeks after the ban went into effect
>>25624952What's even more interesting though is what he posted here, speculating that it's not about Bombie's depiction at all, but rather the use of African natives in his story. This means that even if the panels featuring Bombie were censored (which he famously opposes), the story would still be deemed unfit for reprint unless it were heavily rewritten.Since chapter 11 is the dramatic climax of the entire 12 chapter Life of Scrooge series a rewrite would completely change the point of the story, so it's never going to happen. This comment is buried deep inside a comment thread under someone else's post, so it kinda flew under the radar and most people keep assuming Bombie is what the ban is about.I suppose we won't know for sure until Fantagraphics does a reprint of Voodoo Hoodoo.
>>25624744Uhh its literally a common thing for women to force their bfs to watch disneu with them, EVERY gf ive had has done this
>>25624486To be fair chuds have the same obsession but are more self aware about it. Twitter is filled with Anakin Star Wars edits depicting him as a sensitive young man and the council as out of touch boomers. The difference is rightoids have fun with it, don't make gay essays or texts asserting it's a hidden meaning. They just make memes and move on.
