I get all my reading recommendations from ChatGPT
    >>
i struck my head with a hunk of metal real hard and now the metal is lodged in my skull/brain and i'm trying to convince others to do the same
    >>

It's actually really useful for academic reading lists if you're completely new to a field
    >>
That's fine if you never want to delve deeper than surface literature. It seems completely incapable or unwilling to recommend anything that isn't mainstream or close enough to that. You'll never find a truly obscure gem of a book with it. I know because I wasted a lot of time trying to get it to dig deeper to find more things to read but it just kept giving me the same shit I've read over and over.
    >>
    >>25622361
    >anything that is not an "obscure gem" is "surface literature"

Yep. Enjoy you basic bitch algotaste
    >>
    >>25622368
I think the word for you, fallen out of current use (wrongly, with you in mind), is "hipster".
The canon is a canon, by and large, per Hume, for a reason.
    >>
    >>25622361
I just asked it to rec obscure gems and it gave me:
    [Valbert's Teodor de Wyzewa
Ángel Ganivet's Los trabajos del infatigable creador Pío Cid
    George Gissing's The Unclassed
Duan Chengshi's Miscellaneous Morsels from Youyang
    Al-Hamadhani's Maqāmāt
Anonymous' The Dispute Between a Man and His Ba]
    Knock yourself out.

If they were good they would be more popular

i do this too, it's pretty good
    >>25622361
if you ask a REALLY specific question you can get really specific recs, for example:
    >recommend me a singular book on the turkic khanate of xinjiang, specifically focusing on it's military and political landscape. make it as specific and niche as possible
    >Documents sur les Tou-Kiue (Turcs) occidentaux (Documents on the Western Turks) by Édouard Chavannes (1903)

Only works on books pre-1930, or so. And that their popularity is one that has endured past their time.

people don't get the problem with ai. i'm sure as a tool for this or that task it's decent, it gives you more or less what you're immediately after in that moment. but at a larger historical scale ai is accompanied by the death of the forums, blogs and journals where you might otherwise have gained reading recs - and not only reading recs, but also a cultural context in which to place those books, a scene you could participate in and expect more from in future, a branching network of connections that go beyond your immediate needs and act as a sort of unpredictable unconscious in which the future of culture will gestate. ai is only effective on npcs because they're already sufficiently alienated not to feel the lack of such wider, richer contexts and the sensibilities those contexts produce. a book for them is simply a conveyor of informational or emotional units which you consume as you would nutritional supplements or energy drinks. alone in your bare room you press the button on the universal vending machine and your reading list pops out all pristinely formatted and free of inconveniences such as the tastes of other minds. perfect, you think, so efficient, so frictionless. and outside the world is becoming more and more unreal, it is promising less and less, and soon you'll start wondering why all the books you've had delivered seem to evoke nothing in you, to inspire no images and connect to no history. then you'll tell yourself that books must be pretty gay and overrated after all, and you'll reopen the tab with your ai goonwife so she can asmr you into your eternal sleep.
    >>
    >>25622626
I think forums started dying before AI. This one especially.
    >>
    >>25622630
yes, which was due in part to general cultural decay, in part to social media, which both in turn came from the same tendencies of capital that are now behind ai.
    >>
    >>25622338
Same. People are still living in 2023 with thinking that AI is pure ass.
    >>
    >>25622662
soulless zoomer, it still is 'pure ass', it's just that the true benchmarks are beyond your comprehnsion. your desires are so meagre and your horizons so narrow that ai can give you everything you believe you want - but it will never expand those horizons, or complicate those desires, and you'll die ignorant of the immensity of what you've missed out on.

the problem is that you are essentially talking to a redditor, most of the time it's just a glorified search engine interface that spits out the first result (which is reddit) in a more condensed way
    >>
It's much better than this board once you learn how to interface with it and keep it from just cosigning to what you say.
    >>
    >>25622338
I get ChatGPT to summarize long philosophical tomes for me. Now I understand, for example, Heidegger's Being and Time without actually having to read all that shit.

    >>25623090
    YOU DON'T FUCKING UNDERSTAND IT

if you ever had read a philosophy book attentively and with all your faculties switched on then you'd know why your post is depressing.

in fact if you did understand heidegger you wouldn't be able to stomach something as worldless as ai at all.

but perhaps you're only trolling. 'got me good.'
    >>
    >>25623110
It's because you aren't reading a book but reading an author, and the entire point is to learn their style of thought. The particularities are primary, and AI summaries utterly remove them.

A book is a shard of someone's soul they poured intentionality and care into (hopefully.) Reading is sacred communion.
    >>
    >>25622338
Actually a good frogposter thread? Using AI for book recommendations is the best possible thing you can do with them. After all they were trained on mountains of books. If your AI use leads you to reading books you're doing it right.

Lot of cope from people who base their self worth off of struggling for years to grasp simple concepts wrapped up in intentionally opaque manner. AI has made your skillset irrelevant btw
    >>
    >>25623141
why assume this is about self-worth? again this is something you would only say if you had never had a meaningful encounter with literature.

and i already know that the things most meaningful to me cannot be translated into fungible market value. you're projecting if you think i care about that.
    >>
    >>25622584
    You should write a book.
    >>
    >>25622338
both that and Gemini here and the /history/ general usually. I like reading about the past.
    >>
    >>25622630
actually incel forums are now a thing. I got bullied off a metal forum years ago but at least the incels accept me as one of them despite me being a sexhaver.

different levels of understanding exist. reading a summary of thought is not identical to the thought itself, but it can serve as scaffolding or as a productive imitation of the real thought. secondary source literature has always been useful for learners, though mistaking it for anything resembling full understanding is naive
    >>
    >>25624814
I'm not in a position that commands them as much but it's a massive chore
    >>
    >>25622338
I use ChatGPT for a lot of things, but it has consistently disappointed me for book recommendations.
