    Michael Crichton's "Andromeda Strain".
Crichton later will use the same formula so it all became slop, but it wasn't slop yet in 1969. No more than any other SF / government thriller

They are alright. Just kind of run of the mill historical fiction/bildungsroman
The setting is exotic, it avoids falling for the pitfalls you may writing about such a counter cultural time, you are tunnel viosioned through the protagonist pov to such an extent they become almost inevitably compelling, they are well paced and she really knows how to draw your eyes to the end of the page, and with how short the chapters are you will most likely find yourself going just one more and breeze through them and have a good time
But ultimately when you are finished I don't know what you are suppose to really be left with. After four books all I really remember loving about them is an amazing passage about existential dread and the desire for self annihilation and some admittedly brilliant insight about culture here and there
They are just so damn readable i would ultimately still recommend them, but they aren't nearly as transcendent as one would belive reading the reviews

Depends on what you mean by "slop".

Finished The Golden Rune last week, which was one of the old D&D novels. High fantasy type stuff from the 90s. I enjoyed it, but it ain't exactly high class.
The week before I finished The Hellbound Heart. Which I thought was fantastic and utterly adore Clive Barker's writing style. So lush, vivid, and visceral. But again horror ain't snooty tooty approved.

I guess the only safe bet would be The Old Man and the Sea, that I finished 2 or 3 months ago. Honestly found most of it boring and didn't like the writing style/prose.

Whatever, I am going to tuck into some more Barker tonight. It's going to be great.

Wasn't expecting that much but the second half was actually really good.

imagine if he actually knew how to write good prose...
    >>
    >>25621161
What in your actual opinion makes his prose bad exactly.
Be as specific and detailed as possible.
    >>
    >>25621212
i didn't say it was bad, officer

It was fine but his first two novels were so much better
