Good sirs, pray tell, how might a gentleman of modest means procure the books of the day without bringing himself to ruin? My appetite for literature is boundless, but my purse, alas, is not. Must one possess a fortune to keep abreast of the literary world?

Certainly. Masters ought to encourage their servants to occupy their leisure hours with inexpensive chapbooks, tales of adventure, abridged histories, popular ballads, and short moral tracts. Such modest reading might keep the tongue from gossip and the mind from idleness. Works upon domestic economy, such as Hannah Glasse’s The Art of Cookery and Maria Rundell’s A New System of Domestic Cookery, might likewise prove of considerable benefit to the household.

A male servant who distinguishes himself by industry might even be rewarded with a few romance novels, as a little indulgence for his good conduct.

With the female servants, however, one must exercise greater caution, lest a harmless volume of sentimental prose inflame their imaginations.
It is a well-established principle of household management that a women servants who reads too many novels may become excitable, begin to entertain notions of liberty, and, in the most unfortunate cases, mistake the fictional heroine’s grievances for her own. Such dangerous consequences must surely be avoided.

Would anyone of you happen to know about this new novel which is the talk of the town nowadays, it is about a certain scientist Frankenstein who has produced a big hellish brute, a monster. It has recently been published by the Lackington House and gossip has it that a woman is its writer! I personally find it hard to imagine and belief. Do keep me informed if any of you come across it. I'm told it's currently going for 16 shillings and 6 pence for three volumes.

Are anons here enthusiasts of the poetry of Walter Scott? It is also rumoured that he is the writer of those much esteemed Waverley Novels that are all the rage of the literary world as of late, although I cannot vouch for the veracity of those claims.

Is the news positively true and confirmed that Napoleon has been decisively defeated at Leipzig??
Also, we're doing a Metaphysical Poetry Recital Night on Thursday evening, starting seven o’clock, at the lodgings of Mr. Edmund Ashcombe, Gower Street, near the University of London. All gentlemen with an appreciation for verse and good company are welcome. Refreshments shall be provided.
