What would be the first books you'd want your son and daughter to read as they begin their reading journey?

    Start with the Greeks, Billy.

On a serious note, after all the kids books and what not the first real piece of lit-adjacent material I'd give a son is Something Wicked This Way Comes. A daughter I'm not so sure.

I think classical works are far superior to literature, but it will rely on him and his taste on books.

I would be happy if he grows to be a chuddy strategy-obsessed freak who despises fiction

If a child who is about to begin his reading journey were to spot that and report it back to his parents, they would be perfectly justified in ardently believing that their child had upper management written all over him and would most probably go on to occupy high offices of the land.

Here’s my two year old’s favorite books rn:
    Llama Llama Red Pajama
Brown Bear Brown Bear What Do You See
    Multiple Winnie The Pooh titles
Five Little Monkeys Jumping On The Bed
    Bluey Meets Bob Bilby
And also some “I Spy” type book where she picks out hidden things like bunnies and piggies with different backgrounds on every page

Patrician taste Anon Jr. possess. Bright future, I wish him. Does he read them all by himself or is read and sung to by Mrs. Anon and Your good self?

Thanks, she’s a girl though. We always read the books to her, but sometimes she sits and at least looks at them on her own. She knows the alphabet but we’re still working on reading, but we’ve read those books to her so many times that she knows them all by heart.

That actually reminds me, I forgot about this one Oscar The Grouch book that her mommy has read to her so many times that she doesn’t even need the actual book anymore. They just recite each page by memory.

Now, as an unmarried fool, it would be very unwise of me to offer you advice, since I am sure you are a very good father and already possess the requisite experience. Still, my two cents would be to make sure you restrict her access to the internet. What she wants to read and what you choose to give her to read is certainly none of my business, nor is it my place to advise you on the matter. My only humble prayer is that you ensure whatever access she has to the internet is pure and wholesome.

On a lighter note, make sure that he, she, or whatever children you may have further down the line do not end up like me and a few others, thanks to the unsupervised access to the internet we were afforded in our early youth or childhood.
    >>
    >>25618045
Thanks for the advice, and believe me I get it. We don’t plan on letting her have internet access any time soon and the ol’ lady is even more militant about that type of stuff than I am. She barely lets her watch the TV ever. But yeah, I know, this world is a weird and risky place to raise a child and it probably isn’t getting any better any time soon. I’m plagued by those kinds of worries

I am reminded of a rather humorous instance. A few years ago, a thread along similar lines was posted, asking, “What is the first book you will give your child to read?” One of the first few replies, the second or third, I believe, read: “The Complete, Unabridged, Annotated 4chan Posts of His Father.” I still remember it, and I still chuckle to this day when reminiscing about it.

I feel that the mother’s womb can be interpreted as an as it were “cave” and the paintings on the wall would be the first thing she/he sees. I know this is cringe but it is my belief. Drawings are in a way books. Look at the wisdom of the cave man, learn his ways then *civilize* yourself as you proceed.

First thing I read to my now 14-month old son upon my first night after taking him home from the hospital was Whitman's Song of the Open Road (would have done Song of Myself but I had gotten maybe 4 hours of sleep over the previous 4 days and I didn't have the capacity to read ), and I couldn't get through it without crying. So, Whitman was it for him. We also worked our way through some Willa Cather since I was in the middle of O Pioneers! when he was born.

His favorite book at present, though, is The Pout Pout Fish.

Will do anon, and what a lovely choice. It has been some time since I've read much Coleridge and then I generally just end up circling back to Mariner.

We just moved, and most of our books are in boxes waiting for some shelves to be built. But the good thing is he will grow up around books. I generally think that Holmes was right in Autocrat, that all men are afraid of books who have not handled them from infancy, so making sure the little guy grows up with literature is important.

    Hmm. Natalie Dawson..?
Checked out her jewtube and sure she seems to know a thing or two about business, but man.. taking advice from a beautiful looking "boss girl" roastie is difficult. No matter how good she is I just can't relate to her, and thus don't find her particularly inspiring.

Is the book actually good enough to overlook that fact?

I wouldn't push reading on them. They'd just come to detest it. And I couldn't expect them to actually be intelligent enough to engage with any of the books I value.
