Enjoy reading your book about how Muslims are the best.
    >>
yeah, but the author died before finishing the series. you could stop after God Emperor of Dune but I like Heretics of Dune. or just watch the David Lynch movie if you haven't.

Hmm I am a Xitter user but I have 0 followers and my bait isn't good enough to get reactions from Xitter users. I think I'll post my film-based Xitter bait on the unmoderated /lit/ instead.
This is why 4chan is shit. It just attracts the dumbest failures and rejects from other website and there is 0 moderation for people that are clearly coming here because they're too useless to garner attention on the other websites.

Dune is one of the 5 or 6 sci-fi novels worth reading. In general, the genre is pure trash.

The David Lynch movie is only good if you're a fan of David Lynch and have some interest in Dune. It isn't a good movie. It's a clusterfuck created by a combination of studio meddling and a weird auteur who is largely indecipherable even when given final cut. It comes across like listening to Beethoven's Grosse Fuge but with random notes deleted and pitch corrections inserted by someone who has no interest in music.

The first 2 were quite good. If venevieve or whatever is to be trusted he wouldn't shit on his legacy by making the 3rd a woke shitfest. The only thing that grates me is the choice of zendaya, they could have picked a retarded gay cucumber and it would have better acting skills than that ugly muttwhore

    absolutely worth it
the first book, praised to the heavens though it is, is actually still *under* rated, because it is so little understood
2-4 aren't as rich as 1, but are highly recommended
5-6 are very 'take em or leave em'; they only occasionally rise above the level of standard genre fiction

Chapterhouse did finish the series. Frank was going to write a jihad prequel based on what was in the encyclopedia next. This is a false narrative pushed by Brian and kja.

How are the earlier books not genre fiction but 5 and 6 are
Dune has one of the most cliche chosen one plots ever and Children of Dune is more of the same thing.

I really don't understand this board sometimes because from my perspective Dune is full of sci-fi and fantasy cliches but people act like it's gods gift to the world. Not that it's bad but it isn't all that.

how is ending on a very obvious cliffhanger finishing the series?
    >>
    >>25616971
    >How are the earlier books not genre fiction
Dune references dozens and dozens of books, some overtly, many covertly
It encodes a tremendous amount of material beneath the surface plot
As the most basic of basics, go reread Dune and mark the nods to Shakespeare, and to Rome
If you cannot find them, think about all the other things you don't see
    >>
    >>25617032
Ending on a cliffhanger elevates it out of genre fiction.

All I really remember is it seemed dark and edgy. Did the new movies reference all the gratuitous slavery rape snuff content?
    >>
    >>25617240
Only tangentially. In the David Lynch version the Baron pulls out a twink's heart plug and in the Denis Villeneuve version Feyd slits a slave girl's throat.
    >>
    >>25617045
A lot of those references are to other genre fiction books like John Carter of Mars. A book isn't not sci-fi or fantasy because it references non sci-fi, Asimov included all kinds of references in his books.

The films have already revealed they don’t understand the books. Decision to split book one in half and arbitrarily change the plot to make two films “work” really killed my interest in them as an adaptation. The books are weird but I like them a bunch. Dune, God Emperor, Children / Heretics are probably my top in order.

    >>25616845
Zendaya only has the one snark face but the real problem is all the changes they’ve made to Chani’s character and the plot contrivances they’ve introduced to make her an female audience self insert appropriate sympathetic modern feminist trope as opposed to the bloodthirsty ride-or-die bad bitch she is in the books.
    >>
    >>25623460
Denis understands the books more than you do. He telegraphed early on he was following the “Hello grandfather” alternate path that Paul foresees and avoids
    >>
    >>25623460
Chani was such a non character dude, your seething over Zendaya exposes you as having no serious critique over the adaption
    >>
    >>25623460
It sounds more like you don't understand how filmmaking works
    >>
    >>25623609
    >Chani was such a non character dude, your seething over Zendaya exposes you as having no serious critique over the adaption
Right correct, she's not supposed to be anything but Paul's broodmare which is perfect because then we can focus on things that actually matter. The reason for the changes is that Villeneve is going to try to heel turn the Fremen and turn them into good guys that dindu nuffin, they were just mislead by the evil white guy. Which is still the theme of the overall first novel but once you're past it is no longer the point. The jihadis don't actually care about being wrong anyway they like the blood.
    >>
    >>25623600
Elaborate. I am here for Dune theories.

    >>25623609
Zendaya has just the one facial expression but that is the extent of my complaints about her really. I am bothered by the fact they wrote her a new character and plot line instead of exploring what was written in the books, which I partly avoided getting into due to spoilers for OP.
    >Chani was a non character
I think the fact she goes along with the Jihad and accepts Paul marrying Irulan is interesting as a character trait. I think rewriting the plot of the film to emphasize her sense of betrayal at these decisions is lazy modern filmmaking and undercuts her agency. I also love when she considers taking over her daughter’s body permanently in Children.

    >>25623634
What’s the point of inventing a supposedly impassable sandstorm mcguffin for Paul and the Fremen to get through to waste time only for Chani to get through it in an instant later in the film for plot convenience? I’m mostly mad they decided to do shit like that inside of taking the time to explore the book’s time skip. Also, I wanted to see the aftermath of Paul killing Janus play out. Shedding water for the dead is one of the best parts of book 1. also, the death of Paul’s first son is critical to his choice to stop worrying about his dark purpose and committing to the Jihad.
    >>
    >>25623780
So we know it's not a strict book adaptation. That is settled of course. But I think the one angle it can fit in is the many futures Paul sees. That already gives a plausible thematic basis for depicting a "Hello Grandfather" alternate timeline he textually envisions that he avoids. Here in the film, he literally says that, it's not an accident.
I respect Denis as a filmmaker so I'm granting him the benefit of the doubt.
In Dune 2, Margot Fenring's character had scenes taking up screentime that the books tell us should not pay off or happen. This isn't just a matter of taste in character writing, but a very fundamental editing decision in the filmmaking. She seeks out Feyd-Rautha and gets pregnant, preserving the Harkonnen DNA. She even gets a scene emphasizing that it's female. The daughter never matters in the books. This is all prime material to cut if it's not essential, especially in a long movie. We know the Dune movies have cut prime material already, like Thufir's circular story that doesn't affect Paul much.
My theory is she lied about it being female, paralleling Lady Jessica's deception. Why would she do this? Because she would have opportunity to breed a Kwisatz Haderach.
If there exists a male she has sired with that DNA, what can she do with an Atreides female? He can breed what was planned all along. Thus the mission of the Bene Gesserit actually becomes fulfilled.
We know Dune 2 also hid Anya's casting and Alia being in it. So deception before has already happened. The film skips 17 years later. Exactly old enough for them to be a breeding couple. It was a choice to make the time skip exactly that long.
The film series is also wrapping up here. What may be depicted is not Paul's plan coming to be executed as planned, but foiled. He may not be a precursor to Leto II but the actual Kwisatz Haderach.
Much of Messiah may be the same in spirit and structure to the novel, but I believe this is a sub-plot that may appear as new and be payoff to what would otherwise be pointless material in Dune 2.
In this way, Paul's downfall becomes a failure to control Alia. Her wild sexuality is in an issue in the book, and would be more so here. The film also adds Paul's failure to control Chani.
Paul's downfall - and the lesson Islam teaches - will be due to his failure to control women.

    >which of course is why he felt it appropriate to race and sex swap Kynes and sandblast away (heh) effectively all of the novel's engagement with history, politics, religion, ecology, and economics, right?
That's not important to Paul's core story. It's a movie that has to be a certain length. The book has over 400 pages or more.
    >>
    >>25624796
so Denis is telling a story about Paul, not Dune. that makes more sense to me, then. too bad he's shit at directing and can't get a worthwhile performance out of any actor he's ever worked with besides dry 'woe is me' depression slop.
