I remember reading this somewhere, but I can’t remember where.

Do you mean specifically that in exactly those words, or just vaguely that sentiment?

There's a bit like that in Aaron’s Rod by D. H. Lawrence:

~

“ . . . —But why did you come, Aaron? What exactly brought you?”

“Accident,” said Aaron.

“Ah, no! No! There is no such thing as accident,” said the Italian. “A man is drawn by his fate, where he goes.”

“You are right,” said Argyle, who came now with the teapot. “A man is drawn—or driven. Driven, I've found it. Ah, my dear fellow, what is life but a search for a friend? A search for a friend—that sums it up.”

“Or a lover,” said the Marchese, grinning.

“Same thing. Same thing. My hair is white—but that is the sum of my whole experience. The search for a friend.” There was something at once real and sentimental in Argyle's tone.

“And never finding?” said Lilly, laughing.

“Oh, what would you? Often finding. Often finding. And losing, of course. . . . ”

But AR is a very minor early work so it seems unlikely this is what you had in mind.

I mean those words exactly.

Do you like opera? If so, you may have read it in a libretto
>>
>>25615631
Yes, I do, but I mean texts other than musical ones.
>>

Ok, asked because in most English translations those exact words appear in Zauberflöte. The words do read like the those of a novice (or initiate) in some ritual or other. May want to consider books you've read with that theme running

I just don’t remember, but I suppose that reference to initiation is what I’m looking for in texts.

If you've read Conversations with Eckermann it could be somewhere in there. Few know that Goethe attempted a Magic Flute, part ii libretto-- he venerated Mozart almost as much as Shakespeare. Just a thought
>>
>>25619106
Hmm, could it be in Faust? I’ve read that or at least part 1.
>>
>>25619106
If Goethe tried to write a part 2 libretto, who wrote the music?
>>
>>25619579
If it were anywhere in Faust it would be in the first part
Goethe did ask some guy to compose a score for MF2 but I forget his name. Aar he didn't wind up doing it; he's not well known

it's cracking me up that you recalled a really nice passage from an obscure source on a theme connected to the thread, and op just replied 'nope not that'. some people don't know how to participate in community.

It is from “The Magic Flute”.

You are welcome.
