Genuine question here. I always hear people complaining about Memory, Sorrow and Thorn being too long winded and also having cuck shit. Is there a comparable fantasy story that avoids these pitfalls? “Classic” fantasy with dragons, history, a bit more modern, etc. that is tight, concise and no cucking? Obviously LOTR is out of the question.

What's the recommended reading order for the Culture novels?

Also, anything good with where the protagonist is an AI, or something like Neal Stephenson's worldbuilding (Diamond Age, Seveneves, Anathem)
    >>
    >>25614669
if you've never read any of the culture books I'd say just read them in the order they were published
some seem to think Phlebas isn't the best entrypoint but I read them all in order and I don't really know why people think that

alot of AI chars in the Culture as drones and running ships, planets, and orbitals, etc

If allegations of cuck shit are putting you off reading MS&T then you're missing out.
To define any of the events that occur in that series as "cuckoldry" renders the word meaningless.
As for long winded, that might be a fair criticism of the beginning of first book -depending on your tastes.

    >There were a number of efforts to film The Lord of the Rings in the 1950s and 1960s, most notoriously a project spearheaded by Forrest J. Ackerman, which attracted Tolkien's initial approval due to its Rackham-esque concept art, approval which dissipated after the author read the fully fleshed out treatment. This effort eventually collapsed when Ackerman could not afford to renew/extend his option on the material.
    >There were several later Anglocentric attempts at filming the story, most famously one centered on the Beatles (by most accounts, featuring the four musicians as the four hobbits; others place Paul and Ringo as Frodo and Sam with John and George as Gollum and Gandalf.) Other casting plans included Donovan as one of the four hobbits and Twiggy as Galadriel. The studios involved are said to have approached David Lean, Stanley Kubrick, and Michelangelo Antonioni to direct, all of whom recoiled from the project as impossible to pull off successfully.
    >John Boorman, then regarded as an artistically talented, up-and-coming director, approached United Artists with a proposal for an Arthurian fantasy. The studio, however, offered him the opportunity to direct a three-hour, single-film adaptation, and Boorman began preproduction work on the project. He and collaborator Rospo Pallenberg write a nearly 200-page script, condensing the three volumes down to a simplified sequence of key scenes. Tolkien was surprisingly receptive to Boorman's work in its early stages, partly because Boorman was committed to a live-action adaptation, which Tolkien preferred, and partly because the professor wanted to assure financial security for his ailing wife, and hoped to fully retire to care for her. (However, it is unlikely that Tolkien ever saw a finished script draft.)
    >Boorman's casting ideas are, in retrospect, rather unlikely. At one point he (or the studio) considered casting the Beatles in the fellowship (a recurrent idea among would be producers at the time) and Mick Jagger as Sauron; at another he planned to cast children as the hobbits, making them up to appear adult and dubbing in adult voices; and he apparently settled on such effects as forced perspective and oversized props and sets that Peter Jackson would use effectively decades later. In the final stages of his work, he is said to have planned to cast Al Pacino as Frodo.
    >>
    >>25615979
    >A copy of the final (perhaps only) draft of a finished script ended up in the archives of Marquette University, where most of Tolkien's LOTR papers ended up. Some of Boorman's omissions anticipate Jackson's abridgments -- there is no Tom Bombadil appearance, for example, nor any "Scouring of the Shire." Others are more unique -- there is no visit to Bree; the hobbits simply encounter Aragorn on the road; the Ents are never even mentioned, let alone seen; the Council of Elrond features a great deal of singing, and a performing dog; Saruman inexplicably becomes Sauron's herald (the "Mouth of Sauron"); and Gandalf tortures Gimli to stimulate his ancestral memories when he does not know the password to the gates of Moria. All sorts of characters meet wholly different fates or play quite different roles (especially Aragorn's wholly human queen). Among the defenders of Minas Tirith are a corps of beekeepers. Denethor makes Pippin his court jester. In one particularly senseless change, at the climax of the film, Aragorn and his army fights its way to the side of Mount Doom, directing Sauron's attention to Frodo and his quest. And in one particularly odd touch, the ship which carries Bilbo, Frodo, and the Elves to the Undying Lands "is cluttered with ancient tomes, mysterious alchemical objects, beautiful cloth, and dried fish."
    >Oh, and Frodo has sex with Galadriel.

I like the Dune series but I don't think it has much substance beyond quotable dialogue and worldbuilding. Yes, Paul is a fake god but kipling already did that in the Man Who Would Be King. I can't really get myself to care about anything that happens in the first four books the way hardcore dune fans care. Why should I when every single main character has superpowers that tell them the solution to every problem? The last two are better about having real stakes but they're also the most hated books in the whole series.
    >>
    >>25616520
Fake gods were already done 1000s of years ago.
    >>
    >>25616577
That's true but the specific plot of a guy using a prophecy set up by a secret society centuries ago to pretend to be a god but then having to worry about getting killed if the ruse is exposed is specifically a Kipling thing.

I have a hard time connecting to most modern science fiction lit, even when it's good. It just feels like everything has been done and there's little sincere mystery, wonder or ambition anymore compared to the classics. What should I read to get myself off that prejudice?
    >>
    >>25616520
Did you ever read the ending written by his son and Kevin J. Anderson? The writing is abysmal but the story was okay, would've been much better with a talented author though.
    >>
    >>25616624
that's because most modern writers have no soul. They copy a copy of a copy having never read from the classic source which all the great authors they try to copy came from. Johnathan Strange is one of the few novels post 2000s that's good fantasy. And science fiction? I dunno it's even worse for them I know even less, maybe read the novella Elder Race even though the subject matter has been done by Wolfe to death.
    >>
    >>25616624
That's not possible. Once known it's non longer viable to continue doing so. No one can credibly do Venusian jungles or much else of mystery and wonder because it's been eliminated by the cold, uncaring, advancement of knowledge. Well, at least the sort you mean. You long for the imagined nostalgia of a time decades before you were born.
    >>
As we learn ever more of our limitations, the more it becomes apparent that the vast majority of science fiction is a fantasy, wishful thinking at best, this is especially so the older that it is.

    >Fan Hyulick silently stared at the girl’s face, looking at her cheeks flushing beneath the streetlights.
    >“Don’t get it twisted. We’ll be in separate beds. I live with my grandmother, and she dislikes dissolute morals. A woman must take care of her body when it comes to men.”

The last sentence puzzles me. Probably something lost in translation. I presume the implication is that hookup culture corrupts women's bodies, but it is just a really weird expression.

Honestly and this comes from a writer, perhaps forcing 3k a day might be the death of your career.

You should take stuff slow, let it shimmer, if you force yourself you will get tired, you will rush things, plus, you do need rest to keep it fresh(t).

Plus, you need to planify the lore, do world building, build characters plan even more stuff. Its A LOT of work. Its just unrealistic to do everything on a day, doing all that will at least take you a week, considering you rest so your hypoteticall sleep deprived brain doesnt fry it.

I am talking from experience, give yourself more than a day, give yourself rest, know your limits and dont push em.

I believe in you, Anon! You got this! Happy writing! Good luck!

    1. How long is the average book? Reading sixteen 200-300 page novels could be equivalent to you reading four 1000 pagers the whole year.
    2. People on booktube/booktok admit that they only read the dialogue and skip all narration and have been getting called out for it

I got 12 books for Christmas then realized it was silly to complain I only got through a third of them when given the sheer volume and ranging page counts (and picking up and reading other books throughout the year)

    >How long is the average book?
Well, I consider a book to be synonymous with a novel.
And Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America defines novel to be a minimum of 40K words so that's like +130 pages.
I'm sure people will count 10K novelettes into their account.
Really number of books read is kinda bad metric, if anything metric should how many pages/words.

The phrase "it's so good it feels like it's illegal" is a popular meme and idiom used to describe something—like a delicious food, a great deal, or a clever life hack—that is so intensely satisfying or advantageous that it seems like it should break the rules.
It plays on the viral internet trend "things that feel illegal, but are completely legal," where people share everyday, rule-abiding activities that trigger a guilty or taboo thrill.

Criminally entertaining is the same idea.

    Read darkstalker over three days.

Got embarasingly floored from from what I guess can be called whiplash of not having anything in the way of expectations or maybe just expecting something more action adventure related rather then what I actually got which was a setting largely constrained to nobility court romance. (but they're all dragons)

I then get slapped across the face by it also being this tightly executed tragedy romance novel where there's a rolling dread throughout for the reader to bite their lips for as Anakin nightchad over here threads the needle towards being a supervillain inspite of his lover and friend moving heaven and earth to avert exactly that.

I think what made this part of story so successful is not so much the story of Darkstalker, but the plight of the three friends who try so hard to turn him from the path of evil. The fact that they are not successful makes it hit richer. (Uh spoiler for a prequel/villian origin story but the titular villian does in fact origin)

Setting has certain fantasy-isms to let one know repeatedly that these whole dragon nations have depth that is unseen and trusted to not been needed for the story. It's a tight ship and doesn't have the pages to waste time or effort on going over vestigial information about ther dragon's world outside the limited look at three dragon kingdoms who actually matter at all for this story with the night and ice wings having their war and there being a scattering of seawing politics as well theough the first half since 1/3 of three pov's are of the seawing prince/friend to darkie.

    >Count Arses Tytania, the younger brother of Zarlisch Tytania, was 23 years old, with sapphire hair, pale turquoise eyes, and skin as white as chalk. The word “melancholy” seemed written on his face in invisible ink.
    >Fan Hyulick had averted his gaze towards a statue. It was carved from Ementhal marble and depicted two figures embracing. Sensing that something was amiss, Fan Hyulick observed the statue one more. Once he realised what the source of his unease was, he grew gloomy. The two figures embracing were both male.

So, what I figure happened was that when this novel was written in the 80s, the outcast villain was gay, but when anime was adapted in late 00s, they thought making villainous gay guy would be controversial so they "modernized" it by making him tranny instead.

I have mixed feelings about Tanaka. In many ways, I admire his writing; in other ways, it is novice.
He has these extensive info dumps in the middle of the conversation, where the narrator (NOT THE CHARACTERS) will just fill the chapter with some irrelevant historical incident; he doesn't even try to blend it into dialogue.
And his worldbuilding in any of his works (LOGH, Tytania, Arslan) isn't particularly deep.

Not the other anon, but for me everything just feels undeveloped.
Take FPA for example. What does story about actually tell about them?
    >it was founded by runaway serfs with ice ships
    >they landed a surprising victory in the first year of the 100-year war
    >bunch of imperialists immigrated there
    >in modern time it has become corrupt
And that's pretty much everything we know about it
    We don't know:
    >how it government operates
It's supposedly a democracy, but it doesn't even seem to have a parliament, but a supreme council of five people.
    >what is its second-largest planet after Heinessen
    >what are its political parties
All we get is "pro-war" and "anti-war" but those seem to be movements rather than parties.
    >how centralized it is
    >what its citizens actually believe beyond "muh, democracy"

Most things are just like that. Same thing with the serfs.
The empire was serfs, for some reason. And these serfs kinda just exist to show that the Empire is oppressive.
They don't serve any other purpose or make any sense (like why wouldn't they mechanize instead of serfdom?).
And when Reinhard frees the serfs, it is just a side segment.

It's quite interesting with the prose. It's about a retard writing a memoir about him getting an experiment to be a genius and he regresses back to a retard.

The beginning has the prose reflective of a retard, the he goes brilliant, then as you continue the prose reverts back to a retard. It's very very well done. Especially reading his gradual frustration and inability to express his words the way he did before until he's do stupid he can't even fathom ever having been a genius

    >Most of these questions don't need answered directly
Maybe, but it still needed something to make FPA feel more grounded, rather than just generic USA.
    >If you get too bogged down in worldbuilding your story's pace will grind to a halt
A good writer is able to blend those answers into the story.
    >Asoiaf is a good example of this.
Agree with other anon, it is not good.
A lot of history doesn't make for good worldbuilding.
ASOIAF history is character-centric; meanwhile, almost everything in Westeros is extremely stagnant.

Again, I wasn't saying Asoiaf is good worldbuilding, I was using it to show how worldbuilding can be bad for a story's pacing.

I like asoiaf (up to ASOS)
    I like red rising
First law's second trilogy is dogshit past that point, genuinely feels like it was crammed in and it needed more books than just the one
Asoiaf is utterly disappointing after ASOS, affc was...ok but goddamn progress the plot then you get into adwd and you're like ok affc was a slog but now we're going to progre- aaaand it's more affc but different povs grrm fuck you can't believe people are waiting for more of this shit. Fuck you to anyone who told me to read the books, the show is pretty much comparable and they both shit the bed at the same time after ASOS ends
    >>
Spin is like one of those modern American Godzila movies; it gives off the stench of a publisher who got stuck with the project but happens to be utterly embarrassed to be associated with genre fiction, has no hope whatsoever that this book he has on his hands is going to be a profitable endeavor, and so it asks for "a shift in focus" away from the nerdy sci-fi premise. ¿What do you get instead? A serviceable boilerplate family life drama.

Every, single, "let's peek into the future" chapter that's intertwined with the main story is completely unnecessary. Were they written to, supposedly, spike the plot with something more adventurous? I'm sure a man with erectile dysfunction could get more blood pumping that this soggy wanna-be spy thriller plot. To keep them in the final edit like that is a baffling decision that serves no purpose other than to:
    1) Disastrously roadblock the story pacing
    2) Be a perpetual storm-drain for any possible tension the story was trying to build up, since we know ultimately, what characters are alive well into the future we are shown.
The book could have been improved by shaving 100 or so pages, but its all to comfortable keeping its plates... spinning, even after the performance became boring and predictable .Ultimately, Wilson's name does not belong among the greats like Zelazny, Silverberg, Le Guin, PKD.

Also, the 3 final reveals were so utterly retarded they deserve their own analysis.
    >>
    >>25621858
    >Fuck you to anyone who told me to read the books, the show is pretty much comparable
You have no fucking brain, then. The dialogue in the show was utterly horrid once they ran out of book material. Like a terrible parody of the series. It also loses all logical cohesion. I can't think of any way you could say the show is comparable unless you simply weren't paying attention to anything you read. This is like the opinion of somebody who "read" the books as audiobooks while driving to work or something. Zero retention.

What I meant was stopping at season 4 which is where ASOS ends is perfectly fine and corresponds exactly with the downgrade in quality that season 5 and the lack of material brought
    >>
    >>25621986
    >What I meant was stopping at season 4 which is where ASOS ends is perfectly fine
I am more and more doubting you read the books. The show veered off book material starting in season 2, and it immediately created problems for the larger narrative. This started becoming apparent in season 3, when they had to invent new stuff due to omissions and changes in season 2. They effectively exhausted book material for several characters by season 4 because of their own stupid changes to the plot. GoT had exactly 1 season that was MOSTLY (like 90%) faithful to the books, and it was quality television. Season 2 they started making dumb choices, but it was overall still good. Season 3 is the first season I can't call overall good. The bad decisions were coming home to roost. Season 4 was "watchable" but it was the last season I would call such. Season 5 was putrid trash.

But the rot was there from season 2 if you are paying attention.

Not that citing goodreads is worthwhile as any actual metric of literary value but uh..these 'are' the numbers it's getting out there. Like yeah in no world should this actually be in the running for a true top 20 fantasy stories list. Somthing having an attached fandom poison ratings and all that but for a top 50 of fantasy standalones Darkstalker probably solid enough little doorstop to find a spot in there.

Again, i found it to be a surprisingly solid novel.

While her armada of 100,000 vessels was unmatched by any single power, combining the 9 empires, 38 kingdoms, 8 grand duchies, 40 duchies, 151 republics, and 449 interstellar cities in the universe would exceed a million vessels.

Just finished it last night and enjoyed it a lot. It's been a bit since I read the first two but I think this one is my favorite of the three despite its flaws of the main plotline not really advancing a whole lot (if at all) from the start of the book. Since the second book was a prequel we have not gotten much closer to anything being resolved since the end of the first book.

This didn't bother me personally since I just love reading about the character interactions of Kinch and Galva, the latter of which has grown on me immensely since I begrudgingly picked up The Daughters' War.

The ending was also quite a wild ride and made me much more emotional than I expected it to. Kinda sad that there's only one more book planned for the series.

It's not even that, really. Or rather, that is downstream of the original sin of any entertainment business: believing they get to decide what people want. I think it's a consequence of all the consolidation that has happened over the last century, particularly in publishing, but all entertainment media. They don't have much competition, they start to feel like they own the market, and take the audience for granted. But the audience will eventually move on, if they don't like what you offer. It's like everybody, the publishers, the game studios, Hollywood, it's like they all forgot the audience has a choice to simply not give them money, or even attention. Publishers and producers didn't seem to even consider this a possibility, from the way they react when their attempts to ham-handedly push their pet projects blow up in their faces. Endless excuse making, but nobody owns the mistakes, nobody admits they were trying to control the market in an utterly deluded fashion.

Publishers have always been gatekeepers when it comes to fiction, but back when there were many competing publishers vying to control their niches, this simply encouraged them to publish as many high quality books as they could. Now that everything is consolidated, they feel people don't have a choice about where they get books.

Actual customers stopped being their customers is what you're noticing. Their customers became investors, their business being succesful became less important than their business being appealing to investors, specifically huge corporate investors. It doesn't matter if you don't sell any books if Blackrock gives you a billion dollars.

Now that the money printer has run out of ink they're realizing they sabotaged their long term viability.

For Hollywood and video games, yes, investors became the main concern of the people in charge. But publishing fiction is a different beast. Publishing as a whole definitely has investment money wrapped up in it, but that's mainly in the academic side of the business, particularly publishing for textbooks. That's a racket that makes fiction look like small potatoes, excepting a few very big names who attract Hollywood producers.

Feels like God Emperor of Dune gets all this undue praise because it's babies first weird sci-fi novel when Heretics and Chapterhouse are way more engaging. You even see people say "oh stop after God Emperor the last two are too weird" as though the previous four weren't also weird. They're fans of Dune, but actually reading the whole series is icky or something. Plus there's this concept that Warhammer ripped off God Emperor of Dune even though History of the Runestaff's God-King Huon and Perry Rhodan are older than both. The ending is also very I, Claudius and very Wagner-esque. The worldbuilding is cool (Duncan especially) but 400 pages of Leto being horny for a girl he just met with the occasional good chapter thrown in isn't great reading.
