Low quality post. Go into a corner and end your miserable existence, pessimist scum.

Over you say? The doors of progress have just opened. Everything is within one's means if he gives it go with everything's he has got.

If you have to ask, it is not. If you were truly dedicated to your discipline it would not even be a question, it would be an automatic commitment.

education is fantastic. what field? what aim? whatever it is, youll need a good social network and a good overview of the opportunities in your field. also, be good at what you do.

I've been told that I may be doing original research into my chosen subject matter, and this has encouraged me to pursue a PhD in my field. I originally started on the road of my ideas when I was still getting my MA and they formed the bulk of my master's thesis. I presented them at a conference this summer and got some pushback that basically amounted to the fact that my ideas are interesting and need more work.

I could do this all on my own, in theory, but why not try for a PhD so I'd get paid to study?

So that's my own personal story. I know it's not typical, I know a lot of people seem to get a PhD just to get one. But I, at least, have an external motivation.

What's the doctoral stipend in your country?
>>
>>25611081
Yes.
Because education is what you make of it.

I wrote my thesis conforming to the rigorous requirements of the 20th century. My classmates simply did what was necessary to pass. No doubt they got the same certificate, but I know that not only is my thesis at a glance visibly better than theirs, I can also undergo a viva voce of my thesis anytime and defend it successfully, and my classmates cannot.
Because I learned the proper skills, the real knowledge, and they didn't. It doesn't matter to me that both my lecturers and examiners were idiots, I taught myself from the resources they gave me.

If the knowledge is what you seek, then you can never go wrong. If the certification is what you seek, either way, you need it.

>I presented them at a conference this summer and got some pushback that basically amounted to the fact that my ideas are interesting and need more work.
probably conference-speak for "you need further research to see if they are actually novel or relevant" or "you need to improve your research methodology and presentation"

the monetary benefit is intuitively easy to calculate, especially now with fucking AI giving you all the quick and easy answers

You do not need a PhD for this
If you are driven, absolutely compelled to do research into your field, then a PhD may be worthwhile spiritually.
As a career move it is awful.
>>
>>25611081
Depends on the field and the university.

PhD is for doing and publishing research in a formal academic setting.

Do you want to do and publish research? Are you in a formal academic setting?

Sure, just beware its probably going to be kinda stressful and not as romantic as some imagine it to be. But if the grant you're on pays decently it sure beats working for whatever soulless desk job you wouldve had otherwise. See it as a job that requires steady work, not as some ordeal or trial that only pays off at the end.
>>
>>25611224
that doesnt really answer the question.
if he seeks it but is in lifelong debt that cripples him in a field that is slowly dying due to AI, it is the opposite of what he should be doing.

this is empty psychopomp babble.

Depends on your measure of "worth." Given that you gave no details about your personal situation, it's obvious that this is a low-effort engagement bait thread.

Degrees aren't worth the paper they're printed on, what matters is being able to impress people with your personality and appearance in 30 minute interviews and they won't help you do that.
>>
The value of a degree has been dropping constantly over the last 10 years and AI is going to turbo accelerate that
Not saying you shouldn't go but you should really do the bare minimum it takes to get an office job, the lost income of those ~8 years alone (forget about the price of the degree) will set you up for permanent poverty
>>
>>25617345
Also wanted to add onto this that pretty much everyone I have met that has a PhD clearly did it a way to a) avoid actually having to get a job and b) lord it over other people

It depends what in. I'm doing a degree on Ancient History and Classical archaeology. Frankly I wish I wasn't. To get a good job in a field like that or literature just isn't going to happen unless you're in the top 5%. The market is just too saturated.
>>
>>25618392
>To get a good job in a field like that or literature just isn't going to happen unless you're in the top 5%
And that's for the best. The world does not need more history professors. It needs more electricians. The point is not to get a prestigious job the point should be to make hard physical productive work prestigious. That's why communism is always right.
>>
>>25618415

Trades are getting heavily influxed by zoomers falling for the meme. In ten years trades will be like a CS degree is now. Also just a shitty industry to be in, your peers are all retarded alcoholic college dropouts addicted to drugs and you destroy your body with no 401k.
