Which one should I get? Can I jailbreak them somehow to get quick access to infinity books?

I'm also gonna need it to be able to:
>have offline translation and dictionary functions (but still be able to connect to the internet when necessary)
>allow adding my own non-book PDFs
>leave persistent notes and scribbles on files
>create my own notes and writings
>>
>>25591841
Kindle does all this without jailbreaking it but people here will insist it sucks balls. All I'll admit is that the controls for navigating your library are clunky.
>>
Kobo. But the best models are the old libras. Why they don't have a B&W libra for sale now is beyond me.

My kobo H2O is still working fine. No one should ever get kindles.
>>
>>25591849
>people here will insist it sucks balls
There's just no point of getting it over a Kobo if you are going to sideload anyway. It's €20-30 more expensive, but for something that will last you decades that's not going to make a difference.
>>
>>25591841
no one will be able to fix your device when it eventually breaks if it isn't a kobo, boox, or a kindle, but...
>>25591849
amazon has in the past removed e-books from user's devices. i wouldn't buy one.
>>
You know you can get a cheap tablet that you don't have to worry about jailbreaking and all of that, right?
>>
>>25591841
Is a 13 inch iPad ideal for pdfs? And is a refurbished iPad Air sufficient or do I need to sell blood and sperm to get a newer iPad Pro?
>>
I've only had a kindle and like it a lot. There's no reason to jailbreak it for pirated books. Just download them and use the send to kindle website.
>>
I have nothing to contribute since I'm still using my 2013 kindle and pen and paper, I just wanted to say if anyone here actually buys ebooks and/or doesn't know where to easily get them as warez: kill yourself, you are retarded and deserve to be cattle.
>>
>>25592044

Have we reached the age where people use a fucking website because they can't work a USB cable anymore? Fuck me, I guess the goyim aren't people after all.
>>
>>25591841
just get a cheap computer laptop and read pfs
>>
>>25591885
Buying ebooks is so simple with Kindle, how does that work with other platforms? IlI usually pirate, but I occasionally enjoy buying a new ebook as it's released. Is this tedious on other ereaders?

>>25591975
They won't remove anything you load on there yourself. They can remove any licenses you bought from them at any time, however. If you're using it solely for pirated books, this shouldn't be an issue at all.
>>
>>25591841
Kobo. Just download and upload epub. Simple.
>>
>>25591849
I see no point in jailbreaking a kindle. Just turn airplane mode on and download books from the internet. I would jailbreak it if that would add more options to sort my books tho because kindle's sucks
>>
>>25592703
i do not wish to give money to a company that does such a thing
>>
until it can be demonstrated otherwise, I consider them slow, overpriced, and generally gimped on purpose
it's like the graphing calculator racket
>>
I've used Kobos since 2010. Never had a problem. Wish they still made a midsize B&W reader, instead of just small and large.

If you're sideloading your own content it makes more sense to me than a Kindle. Life's too short to buy a product you can never connect to the internet or update without breaking your own shit.
>>
>>25591841
>allow adding my own non-book PDFs
that's not what e-readers are for
>>
>>25591985
I vastly prefer reading on my Kobo than any of the several tablets I have that span the quality range. Unless you're talking pdfs

>>25592007
The iPad Air is perfectly fine. Sometimes I feel like my 13" Pro is too big

>>25592066
I pirate but I also buy books to support authors I like. I have a disposable income
>>
>>25591841
kindles are super shit for PDF
it’s so laggy, size too small too
>>
>>25591841
handwriting on eink sucks, also tablets that support that are super expensive
also again, lag
>>
Kobo is great.

I wish the Paranga or that one flexiprototype I forget the name of got off the ground though. An ereader that was basically a book you could reflash the pages of? Yes please.
>>
Anyone have an opinion on Boox?
>>
Let's say, hypothetically, that I've been self-publishing a novel, and am about ready to start selling e-books of it on my own website.

Which file formats should I be sure to have it for sale in? I have Calibre so I can do a lot.
>>
>>25596148
I appreciate the page buttons and side mounting.
>>
>>25596148
I have Onyx Boox Lomonosov 2, absolutely massive screen. No jailbreaking required because it's Chinese. Good battery, nice interface, no lagging bugging. But I never owned any other e-reader, so can't compare.
Best $300 buy I ever did. If I had to sell everything and remain only with one device, that would be it.
>>
>>25596149
So, I've heard that eBooks is a relatively neutral store that supports a lot of formats. They have this little Help response here:
https://support.ebooks.com/hc/en-gb/articles/213875366-Guide-to-ebook-formats

Might be useful for you.
>>
>>25591872
What's wrong with the new libras?
>>
>>25591841
Camp the old Kindle Paperwhite sales pages Amazon and try to snipe a used one. This one was indistinguishable from a brand new model. This is the 2024 model. Well worth it after the jailbreak with infinity free books and KoReader with an added offline dictionary.
I also have a Xteink X3 but I don't used it as much, it's more of a toy for an ADHD phone addict.
>>
>buy Kindle Paperwhite
>email pirated epubs to my device
Simple.
>>
>>25597711
>Xteink X3
I wanted one of these until I looked up the details just now
>only supports EPUBs
>no backlight
I had might as well use my phone, then. So fuck it I guess.
>>
>>25597720
>email
You can link Calibrie and KoReader together via wireless network to sync your entire library. Calibrie will send the books directly to your book folder in the kindle.
>>
>>25597711
>>25597738
Got an Xteink X4 pro and I returned it. Nobody told me just how garbage the font clarity and solidness is compared to even a 2018 kindle
>>
>>25597679
They're color only, which is worse for reading text.
>>
Why not just buy a tablet?
>>
File: 2425.png (218 KB, 423x347)

>>25597896
Because tablets don't have eink, you might as well read on your phone.
>>
What's a good e-reader for writing (keyboard)? preferably not too expensive
>>
>>25596148
i have one. bought it because there didn't seem to be any currently available kobos that had microsd slots. i have to say, its the only device i've had that doesn't suffer when i open a pdf.
>>
I want one of these with buttons, e-ink, not sure about a frontlight, but definitely dictionary and lookup features. 7", maybe would settle for 6".
considering Kobo Clara BW or a Paperwhite when the new one comes out. XTEink seem cool but too small. Amazon are a gay megacorp so I'm leaning Kobo Clara BW but the screen on a Paperwhite seems a little better.
not sure what to get.
>>
>>25597745
>Calibrie
Fuck Calibre and the Indian who made him.
>>
>>25600296
what's the alternative then?
>>
>>25600367
Wait for someone to vibecode Calibre without the folder structure and clunkiness probably.
>>
I'm THIS close to pulling the trigger on an XTEink X4 Classic. It has the buttons. It has no bullshit. I like. It's a bit small but whatever, it's cheap. If I want an e-reader, is there a good reason to pick something else?
>>
>>25602089
When WW3 starts you'll get shot for being a Chinese spy with the XTEink. Just get a goyventional ereader instead.
>>
>>25602115
>it's so good the only downside is it's chinese
fair enough
>>
Anons bitch about reading on the phone but you can literally put the blue light filter and other filters on so I don't get their point.
>>
Calibre is dogshit and I only ever use it to read EPUBs. PDFs I just read on Chrome. You can use Gemini now to analyze PDFs and answer any questions you may have about the text, it's really cool.
>>
>>25591849
I had to jailbreak my kindle thoughbeit. Don't think it's bad. Honestly worth $80, except it is a bit small for me
>>
>>25602125
e-readers have a bigger screen and really long battery life plus I liek reading without a light shining at me even if it's been filtered because I also read at night before bed
>>
>>25599593
>i have one. bought it because there didn't seem to be any currently available kobos that had microsd slots. i have to say, its the only device i've had that doesn't suffer when i open a pdf.
Which one do you have? I wanted a Kobo too but no SD slots so... I have to find something else. But Boox seems to be android spyware?
>>
>>25602735
I've seen a few okay looking raspberry pi readers. Try PIEreader for software.
>>
>>25597999
just try to find an android device that has an e-ink screen and bluetooth so you can use a full size keyboard.
>>
>>25602735
i have a go color seven gen II. i don't know about spyware, but it has never once connected to the internet.
>>
This must be the thread. My kobo has frozen on the sleep screen, no matter how long I charge it. Buttons do nothing and holding down the power button does nothing to reset it.

Any ideas? It is an old second hand one.
>>
>>25600367
I'm using bookorbit, there also other similar ones. Calibre is fucking garbage
>>
>>25591841
is there any shitty bare minimum e reader for like $50. i just need infinity free books
>>
i use a kobo and to pitare books i just have to

>download a .epub on my PC,
>plug in the KOBO with a USB,
>drag and drop from computer file to kobo.

don't know if its that simple on kindle but i cant imagine why it wouldn't be.
>>
>>25606323
hold down the power button untill it reboots, takes like a 30 second press
>>
>>25607707
I feel I have, and had it plugged in for ages. I'll try again but it feels futile. I even tried it with that other button, but it isn't working.

Thanks anyways, I'll let you know if I get it working.
>>
>>25607701
kindle uses a proprietary format which is why you have to email the file through their converter

>>25592072
bezos didn't make it easy
>>
>>25591841
I have access to a used kindle paperwhite 11 gen and a used kobo clara hd. I am also eyeing the XTeink x4 classic. Whch one should I go for. Use case is reading pirated epubs and mobi files.
>>
>>25608598
>you have to email the file
can't you convert with caliber and transfer over usb anymore?
>>
>>25607688
you could buy a used one
>>
i just got a black boox go 7 (b/w not color). it's not cheap but a very nice ereader. not a single complaint so far
>>
I'm at a lost on what to get
I want one that

>easily drag n drop pdfs, epubs and cbzs etc
>good size for manga
>good battery life

I'm not getting the calibre hate ITT. It's functional and full featured, I've built my own epubs in the editor. It's never given me trouble sending epubs to my kobo. What's the problem?
>>
>>25591841
I'm trying to figure this out myself since I want it for books, manga, and comics all at once. For books only I was constantly recommended to get a cheap Kindle (Literally any era, even the original ones) and jailbreak it, otherwise Kobo was the brand people wouldn't stop recommending. I already have one of the OG Kindles from a relative more than a decade ago but it's no good for comics for example and it's super slow on just using ebooks.

When it came to all three of my requirements I was checking yesterday for some budget ones after seeing a guy review the Walmart Onn tablets since those seemed alright and I don't know what world people come from where $700+ is considered "Budget" for a tablet because there was one guy recommending an Honor MagicPad 4 which has to be imported from China and starts at $700. Besides the Onn tablets I have no idea where to go for an all-rounder as I was pointed to the modern color Kindles that use e-ink and then that.

When I mean "Budget" I mean "Under $200", not $600, but that's a nice thing to keep in mind, thanks.
>>
>>25609970
you are not gonna have a good experience trying to read manga or comics on a budget e-ink device so just get an android tablet.
>>
>>25609970
those $600 devices will be $1200 by the end of the year due to ram shortages.
better buy now.

I always buy ebooks on Kobo and never had any issues. In fact, some are DRM free so you can download and do whatever you want with them.
>>
>>25591841
None of them are worth it unless you like being a cuck to planned obsolescence. The newest models of kindle, nook, kobo, sony, etc. are allegedly not even lasting more than a few months before users get bored of shuffling their massive ewaste collections on and off the device, and realize that paper has always been cheaper and better visually and tactily than failed failed failing attempts to emulate paper.
>>
>>25611984
Speaking of 1984, they are reportedly deleting books from your device which aren't backed up in the cloud, so who knows of your ewaste collection wouldn't just go missing someday, silently patched out by Jeff Bezos.
>>
>>25611984
>>25611992
>my ereader isnt a kindle
>it was never connected to the internet
they aint deleting shit.
my ereader was bought in 2023 for 140$ and ive read close to 70 books on it,some of them are quite rare and/or expensive so i really dont see how paper is less expensive when one of the book ive read a used copy would have been more expensive than the ereader.
and news flash having an ereader doesnt prevent me from buying/reading paper book,i have a bookshelf filled with books and still visit the used-bookstore in my town semi regularly.

Jailbreakers already solved this. You jailbreak the Kindle and then add another patch on top to prevent Amazon from giving you the goyim updates and bricking your device or removing your books.

A huge W for kindle is that you can send books to your kindle email and it'll just add them to your library with no need to jailbreak.
It's a little less convenient than drag and drop but will also sync up with your phone so if you're somewhere without your kindle and want to read you can just open the app and it works seamlessly like any purchased book.

I suppose the downside is that if someone gets a hold of your kindles email address they could fill it up with a ton of junk
