How good are the later Harry Potter books really? In terms of prose and worldbuilding.

I know that the early books are comfy and whimsical children's books (or supposedly so, I have never read them) but what about the ones that are aimed at the older reader as they grew?
>>
>>25587583
Don’t expect much in way of prose. I’m sure the worldbuilding is pretty solid though.
>>
>>25587583
They get more serious, the plots get more elaborate (but still full of holes), there's more drama and enotional complexity. There's more world-buildong but nothing that holds up under any scrutiny.
>>
Rancid dogshit by an author who got too big too fast and started to believe she was some queen of literature and above editing or critique
>>
>>25587596
Solid is the one thing HP world building is definitely NOT.
Creative, fanciful, funny, and elaborate? Sure. But it's not solid.
>>
>>25587583
>How good are the later Harry Potter books really?

Not good. But there's a solution for that issue.

J.K. Rowling is pretty good at world building and for the most part I think the plot is mostly Ok. The personal relationships between characters could stand to be improved.

So solid that it has generated millions of fanfics in an effort to fix the most glaring holes.

1. A lesser Roal Dahl. Serviceable but unremarkable
2. Worst one by far. Boring and meandering even by children book standards
3. Grossly overrated, but lose all the quiddich stuff and it's at least an improvement
4. Starts the page crawl, but picks up the pace. It's alright. Also no quiddich
5. Best one by far. Has actually some insight into teenage angst and it's the only one where the usual mystery gimmick has a satisfying end
6. A step back to be sure, but has great passages about grief that are a highlight of the whole series. Second best
7. Second worst one. Nothing redeemable about it
>prose
Unremarkable across the board but also inoffensive
>worldbuilding

Yeah. I don’t know what I meant there. it’s been over 20 years since I read them and I was like 12 so forgive the retardation.
>>
>>25587625
One that pops to mind is how they spend a huge chunk of the last book looking for ways to destroy the mcguffins with the magic sword and the monster poison cited as the only way to do so, only to find out that there is actually a fire spell that does just that easily and a low level malfoy goon is the one to cast it of all people and apparently hermione knew it. Why the fuck didn't you use it earlier with the other items you bitch?
>>
>>25587625
Dragons? Various other magical plants and creatures in the entire series that just conveniently stay concealed from muggles. Basically the entire central conceit of the "wizarding community" living in secret alongside muggles is just impossible to maintain.

Various spells and magical functions like only being used when it's convenient for the story and ignored when it's not, like Time Turners.

The entire plot of Goblet of Fire.
>>
Bad. They're bad books for dumb people.

I think the movie version boosts the reputation of this one. And the time travel gimmick is well-executed (even if it is retarded from a world-building perspective)

>>
How does Harry Potter compare to The Worst Witch?
>>
>>25587836
I recently reread the book and the movie basically changed all the characters for the worse and lost a lot of the atmosphere in the book.

>>25587583
I lost all interest after book five, which is frustrating but quite good. Although I was close to the character ages when I read the last two books, I found the romantic subplots in HBP incredibly annoying and DH too was in desperate need of editing. What do you mean introducing the title artefacts out of nowhere when you already have horcruxes? Absolute bullshit.
>>
>>25587878
>I recently reread the book and the movie basically changed all the characters for the worse and lost a lot of the atmosphere in the book.
Yeah but critic-types still sucked off the movie a lot, in contrast to the first two movies, and it does have a pretty good dramatic payoff at the end.
>>
>>25587878
To put it another way, the Azkaban movie has a reputation of being "the good one" while the rest are just kinda decent blockbuster stuff. Not because it's accurate to the book, but because it actually works well as a movie. So I think this attitude bleeds back into the book conversations somewhat.

>>
>>25587613

>>
The Half Blood Prince was by far the best of all. Good pacing, interesting characters outside of 'whimsy and quirky' creatures and Hermione being the most dull female charachter ever. Just constantly on mood swings and serving as a walking Wikipedia for plot convenience. Phoenix was a dull, sloth crawl. The first 4 have good energy and interesting dynamic mystery (generally). Rowling was terrible at writing action scenes. The flash backs in HBP provide interesting character lore that serves the plot.
>>
>>25587583
They're pretty simple. It's clear she (and her ghost writers) had no plan and was just making up shit for each individual book. There's lots of retcons and plot holes.
>>
Plot holes is the least interesting criticism ever especially in a children's series about wizardry. Honestly if that's your go to barb against fucking Harry Potter, you're just a shit reader in general.

That's not to elevate the series. I grew up with them and even I felt it was both straining against its premise and yet not really rising above it. Chiefly it both depends on and is limited by its need to stay isolated from the "real world" so we never quite get the sense of how the stakes and consequences of their actions affect them. But fine, it's a kids book. In the realm of mania books, there're lot worse than Harry Potter.

What is done well is the characterization. Most of them may be archetypes, but they're clearly defined and understandable as people. This especially becomes notable with book 4, where the disguising of the conspiracy works because of the facade of Moody being this gruff battle scarred hardliner. It's when Harry has such personalities to rub off that the books really work imo. Dumbledore being the main example. It's when he's by himself that the plot needs to take flights of fancy and convience, like the contrivances around the hallows in the last book.
>>

>>
>>25587583
I loved the first four when I was a kid, they were imaginative and had this whimsy and a sense of wonder. Starting with book five, it turned into a teen YA series with more "mature" tone, I guess. I think the trick was that the series matured with its readers but I was binge reading them at ten years old, it was quite a tonal whiplash for me to go from a silly tale about wizards in a weird castle to whatever happened in later books.
>>
>>25590037
>(and her ghost writers)
Yeah, you can tell 3 onward had ghost writers. 1 and 2 are mostly complete dogshit, so I'd say its fair to say she wrote them. 3 feels half written by her and 4-7 she wasn't even involved beyond being an ideas guy. I don't see many people talking about or acknowledging it though.
>>
>>25587625
Everywhere. The wizards world makes no sense, she didn't have enough creative capacity to come up with something otherworldly enough but still believable
>>
I'm curious as to why don't wizards in HP live like literal godkings over the muggles. The secrecy thing is a joke.
>>
>>25592191
Probably because "I can tell" isn't really great evidence
>>
>>25587583
I think in general the books get worse as they go on. Part it is the characters and readers outgrowing Rowling's writing ability. Like, if you're writing a book about 11yos for 11yos, not everything really has to be that well written. But the books turn into YA (or just A for some people) and now her shit makes less sense. I also got the impression that as she got more successful the editors really took a hands-off approach, so the actual technical level of the prose gets worse. Worse phrasing, mistakes, obvious plot holes, reused sentences just a few chapters apart, that kind of thing. I can't remember which book it was but I thought I was going nuts with dejavu, and then I realized she'd repeated the same fucking description for a character's actions several times.
>>
>>25587583
Order of the Phoenix is the best entry in the series & its not even close.

You must understand, unlike the first 3.5 installments, the purpose of the later books is not primarily to worldbuild, but to demonstrate how Voldemort's resurrection corrupts & defiles the fabric of reality of every aspect of the comfy and whimsical children's world established by the early novels; its your standard Songs Of Innocence versus Songs Of Experience diptych
>>
>>25587836
The movie version of 3 is terrible. Takes out almost all the good parts of the book, changes so much for the worse, and is just a jumbled mess of scenes because so much information is missing. The book is great, though.

>>
>>25587583
The plots get even stupider due to the world building. Most of the things Voldemort does make no sense even by his nature as an OCD serial killer/cult leader. Snape never having anyone actually out him as a double agent is ridiculous and the roundabout way rowling tries to pretend the other death eaters accept that shit requires them all to pretend to ignore obvious traitorous behavior.
Really most of the writing only makes sense if you're a woman because Voldemort is extremely feminine in how he acts and his overall thought process.
Bitch doesn't understand hierarchy or the way that a top down organization keeps their soldiers in line at all so it all comes off as a sort of clubhouse for old cunts.
Harry himself does not feel like a teenage boy at most points, her characterization is of some kind of prop that she is trying to make you believe has a personality. Harry doesn't really have goals throughout besides a generic chekclist of "play quidditch" and "talk to generic love interest at this moment" until something happens.
World building itself is mostly fine but you constantly have problems due to her magic system having no defined limits or having limits defined out of convenience to the author at that moment. It's all ephemeral so she doesn't have to do any mental work of keeping things straight as the story goes on. So many times you'll see a spell and the implications of it go far beyond the current moment, the three unforgiveable curses are incredibly stupid outside of the death one considering that the good guys could win by imperiusing every single bad guy they encounter and never having any real trouble, finding out you can transfigure people really brings up a lot of problems about Voldy's secret society, are the aurors all fucking stupid?
Best thing to do, turn your brain off or read another series.
>>
>>25587583
Book 3 introduces literal time travel, as a big hint that consistent worldbuilding was not a focus of the series.
>>
what really annoys me about the books is how much rowling describes characters blushing whenever they are embarassed. so, so many times you read about how a character's cheeks "turned a shade of scarlet" or something and it just feels so unbelievable....most people do not actually physically blush when slightly embarrassed or nervous.
>>
>>25587583
I would say the writing style works a lot better in the first 3-4 books because they are children's books trying to be children's books, but the later volumes try and fail to become at least "young adult" books.

Honestly I would say the quality of the films and books is pretty commensurate. The better the book, the better the movie and vice versa. The books start getting more and more contrived and less whimsical and the movies follow suit.

He doesn't usually kill the mother at the same time as their child is why. He also doesn't exclusively focus on kiling children, usually he wants them to grow up under his thumb with some brainwashing.
Harry Potter is poorly written but to miss the obviously written explanation for why it was different implies a lack of reading comprehension. It's a chidlrens book so you should be pretty concerned that you cannot parse it.

The only really compelling part of the series to me was the department of mysteries sequence in five, it's the only time Rowling left something to the reader's imagination, and the only aspect that truly felt magical.

Order Of The Phoenix is THE bildungsroman
Amazing worldbuilding, and true character growth you hardly ever see even in an upmarket novel.
Harry's first chapter is him listening to the news itching to fight the war and get his hands on Voldemort's throat with no thought as to the possibility of himself dying. Harry's last chapter is him understanding the true cost of war in a very personal and tragic way, understanding that his own life will probably be lost, and yet willingly accepting the sacrifice all the same in order to defeat evil. True maturity.

Yeah. I suspect it’s nearly impossible to really enjoy it after the age of 20 - unless, perhaps, you’re reading it to your own child in voices.
Most HP fans discovered the books in childhood, became devoted followers, and now experience a persistent, ongoing sense of nostalgia in various forms.

>Memory-wiping exists, except it only removes bad memories (so every memory Hermoine's parents had of her was bad?)
What? Obliviate is never really fleshed out, it doesn't just remove bad memories, it seems to be that the wizard can be selective but is never really explained how. Where did you get the bad memories addition?
>America practises Muggle/Wizard segregation so no half-bloods - but this has literally zero effect on wizard population
I don't remember where the dumb bitch said it but she implied that mating with muggles/half bloods actually does move wizards towards not having magic, making Voldemort and the supremacists essentially correct but only a long timeline.
>Ministry of Magic Wizards are so inept at magic that they purchase 500 Shielding hats from Fred and George Weasley (who are like 17 at the time)
This makes some sense only aurors were hired for their combat ability everyone else is bureaucracy.
Time Turners exist, but they're only used so a teenage girl can age at 3x the normal speed in order to GPA-grind
Time-Turners were 100% her trying to make a cool plot twist for the end of the third book and just never wanting to deal with that shit again. See also Polyjuice potion being used extremely sparingly as it breaks the whole wizard war apart since you can just capture someone and asssassinate your enemies without them even realizing weird that during the 5th year this didn't happen a lot more since they were doing stealth as a theme that year.
Centaurs abducted and gang-raped Umbridge and no one cares
I mean it's what Centaurs are known for, gonna assume they just obliviated her afterwards since it was entirely her fault.

>>

>the visual novels I mentioned
Which ones specifically? Are they all on itch io website? I do hope that they're good since the art is slop generated, I'll make an exception for this.
>>
>>25600200
I’ve seen a few rewrites, but the quality is poor. Some of it looks like AI slop.

Professional artists jump on trends to boost their accounts, but that’s not possible with fanfiction - there’s nothing to monetize or sell as commissions. And let’s be honest: most HP fanfic writers whose work is actually readable are either women, or guys who write porn, harem stories, or isekai.
I'm afraid even if they did write about a Malfoid, it’s unlikely to be the kind of "convenient" tsundere trad-waifu you’re looking for.
>>
>>25600238
I hate sloppa and it can be jarring at times but considering how fast these were made and how big they are I can pull through it

There's one guy on xitter doing some shorts about it and I really like his ideas for the story. It's a shame he isn't interested in doing a rewrite.

The majority of fanfics under the "female draco" tag (since Malfoid took off a month ago) on Ao3 have been very clearly written by men, non-smut, either attempt to copy jkr's or write it in a way where it's believably in-universe and portray Malfoid as Malfoid, to varying degrees.
The anime formatted stories and characters are far and few between. I have only seen a few "b-baka, it's not like I like you" fanfics. They're utter shit. Fucking awful to read.

There's also a half dozen authors attempting a rewrite, to varying degrees of quality.
A lot of the fics revolve around certain brainstormed events and how they'd evolve. It's very charming.
>>
>>25600225

A confluence of factors.
>Artist on bluesky has to flee bluesky after insisting Malfoid is a biological woman and not a tranny
>Korean makes striking bits of fanart for a Korean Malfoid fanfic that's been around for a while (that one really is smut though)
>Chuds notice that it fixes Ginny non-romance and the ending at the same time
>Coin "Malfoid" to make everyone even more pissed
>Yearning intensifies
That's basically it. Now it just has a bunch of fans and a collection of writers on the sprint of their lives.

>The majority of fanfics under the "female draco" tag (since Malfoid took off a month ago) on Ao3 have been very clearly written by men, non-smut, either attempt to copy jkr's

Well, yes- most of the men under this tag have been active since October 2026 . They are clearly absolute beginners, and their level of writing is truly dismal. A lot of it is even AI-generated.

I was referring to more experienced authors - like those artist at X - people who actually have skill, whose work is at least somewhat interesting to read, and who don’t just rely on the standard clichés lifted straight out of anime or amateur, school-level fanfiction. These who already crafted their own style, rather than just coping J.K. Rowling or someone else.

My expectations aren’t particularly high, but I’ve still been left disappointed. Perhaps it’s because I’m also involved in other fandoms, where the contrast is quite striking.
>>
>>25600602
Yeah you talk like a cunt anon. A lot of the stuff on Ao3 is good and some stories on twatter are good.

Lol. I just noticed that the most popular Malfoid "fanfic" is just a poorly "rewrited" (copied) version of the original.
Like how is it counted as fanfic? Literally just paragraphs ripped straight from Rowling’s. And the new, fan "additions" don’t even fit the style or the characters at all. 3K likes, 1K comments.

Why do we live in a reality where a man's fantasies can conceive romance that simply isn't possible in the mortal world? Why were we given the ability to dream of things that we can't reach? Why give us so cruelly a glimpse of divine perfection? Isn't this a fault in our blood, something abnormal which wasn't meant to be and ruined us all forever? Was it given to us specifically because we are unworthy, to show us how we inevitably squander what little divinity we're given, and as such given to us for the sake of punishment? Is it simply a mistake of nature, which left us to dream of ever higher peaks to climb and more ineffable beauty to reach, a toil that will never end and will always leave us hungering, a mere delusion of a higher purpose we will never be truly aware of? Wouldn't it have been better for man's heart to be that of a mere animal, one whose thoughts never stirred above the dust upon which its paws stood, one whose eyes never looked up above toward the stars, never to wonder, never to dream?
What am I being punished for? Why are the Gods so wroth at me? I hold my hands out like a beggar, and the Gods pour endless sand through my fingers; they show me promises through my eyes, and with my eyes still shut after a dream I know is over, I keep clutching at the endless torment. I grasp nothing as the Gods laugh. I will never hold Malfoid's hand.

Prose is ok
Worbuilding is infantile, which is okay while they are children's books, but becomes a problem near the end.

The biggest failing of the books is their morality and ideology. The author tries to write social commentary about classism, but instead exposes herself as an extremely socially naive (and genuinely a little bigoted) middle class bong woman born in a crumbling empire, who has still on some level internalized slavery as a fact of life.

Actual chinese (not the ABC bananas who couldn't write their names anyway) don't really give much of a shit for romanisation because of the many systems we use and because of a sense of "do I care? It's not my language lmao"
After all, would you care precisely which ideogram is used to write your name in chinese, and whether the writing is more Taiwanese or PRChinese or medieval or whatever?
I personally have met at least 4 different people with my surname romanised in different ways. E.g. Brown, Browne, Braun, Braune, Bruin, Brun, etc.

Furthermore, the fact that the so-called defenders of chinese culture who raised this hue and cry immediately assumed that Cho is a SURNAME actually pissed me off, because that's the LEAST likely interpretation an actual chinese would have gone for. Because when we romanise our names, we often go with the Anglo order of Firstname Lastname, e.g. Jamie Chung or John Cho. Or we introduce ourselves solely by our given names, e.g. at one point there were hundreds if not thousands of chinese running around with the name Siew Loong / Xiao Long (again, different romanisation depending on dialect), because that was Bruce Lee's (stage) name, Lee Siew Loong. And in fact every day I am called by my given name in chinese. A first glance of the book from a chinese lens would conclude that Cho Chang therefore might have been Lee Cho Chang or Wong Cho Chang or whatever.
The most RETARDED possible interpretation is the one they went with. It would be as if Ang Lee introduced himself as "Lee Ang". Or if I were to complain that "this character Keanu Reeves gets Hawaiian culture wrong because Keanu is not usually a surname."

Fucking virtue-signalling hypocrites.

>>
>>25613540
>what is probably only a Korean surname (Cho)
P.s. it would not be unusual to romanise Zhou (the dynasty) and Chou (the singer) as Cho, again bearing in mind that chinese people don't really give a damn for Latin alphabets and romanisation
So even on the face of it, that objection was clearly done by white or ABC women who don't actually have a clue about the culture their allegedly defending

Which, to me, is the greater insult.

The urge to change this part of the third book must be overwhelming for the fanfic authors. It also doesn't really help the Buckbeak story much aside from creating a false impression that Buckbeak dies for a bit. Really worthless thing to introduce time travel into your story over.

Keep in mind they gave it to a girl who hadn't hit puberty yet.

I think at the point where you do Malfoid being a tsundere and a love interest, you've basically thrown out the second half of the books, and you can do whatever the hell you wish from that point onward.
HP is a story with a double identity. until more or less book 5 it is a typical bildungsroman, except with the magic school and jokes about british classism. That paradigm Malfoid or any other tsundere romance fits well in, you're basically reinvented Rakudai Kishi except with british people.
Then there is what starts in book 5, matures in book 6, and is the entirety of book 7 and it's a christian parable with Harry being a kind of messianic figure (Harry finding out he must die to make Voldemort mortal is a Gethsemane like scene.)
That paradigm really doesn't work for the Tsundere romance, and it is specifically the death eater invasion in book 6 that marks this turn, and canonically Malfoy is responsible for it. Once you wrote Malfoid in as a love interest, the reason for that change vanishes. You can write books 5-7 from scratch.
(which IMO is an improvement, i'd much rather throw out Harry the messiah and have this be a story about the school.)

> tl;dr: Snape 2. You hate her until 6, then it all makes sense and becomes best character

Her closeness to Harry is driven by her need to be free of his overbearing father and oppose the Death Eaters. Therefore:
> 1 and most of 2: Definite antagonist
> Ginny dies at the end of 2, Ron and if Ron x Hermione was correctly set up Hermione distances themselves from Harry til the majority of 3, maybe 4.
> Malfoid, now a woman has no reason to actively kick Harry, her strategy in 3 is making him a Pariah. This means the impact of Sirius and Quidditch on Harry's life is emphasized.
> The Quidditch World Cup would be the Harry/Ron peace treaty
> In 3, Draco is opposed to Buckbeak's execution as he realizes he's made a mustake, and her father's hamfisted ways plus that he's a death eater and she has nothing to do with that sort.
> In 4, malfoid can drop extra cues about the Tournament, and obviously the Yule Ball as the crown jewel if it, first time we see Drarry in all their glory
> This means Malfoid has 4 books of character growth by the events of 5, and in stead of "incompetent lackey eager to prove himself" we get: "capable and formidable witch, well-placed". That's deep recce/intel; but placing malfoid in that role would undermine the brilliance that is Snape. Obviously Malfoy's a member of tge Order, whether overtly or covertly, and is now overtly opposing her father.
> So as an asset her primary capabilities are HUMINT, connections and a supply of Dark techniques.
> Making Harry an Obi-Wan like Grey Jedi figure.
> This means she's with the trio openly only in 6/7
> Big Damn Kiss somewhere near the end of 5.
> Malfoy gets disowned by her father somewhere around mid-5 to 5-6 summer.
> Becomes more interesting if Malfoy has a brother 2-3 years below her because the family name must continue. As Voldemort is scraping the barrel, he's pressed early into service, by his 3rd year. The two are defined by their opposition to one another and the love between malfoid's brother and Lucius.

Harry the Messiah also ends up being pretty lame since he doesn't get to do so much hero stuff, becoming more a victim that Voldemort kills himself on, pretty much his entire failing being his hubris. Book 7 really felt meandering to me as a result, Harry just getting dragged along everywhere.

You still have to deal with Voldemort obviously...if you wanted to make a really big change, I think a point to twist it at would be the Triwizard tournament. What if Voldemort fails to revive himself? I don't think it's so crazy. His plan basically was to have the weakest idiot in the world, Pettigrew, overpower Harry after he just got off from winning the tournament by ambushing him in a graveyard. What's the guarantee that Pettigrew's really going to be able to do that, even if Harry is still a kid? There is literally no backup plan, Voldemort at this point is just a creepy golem thing and Pettigrew is his one and only helping hand since Crouch Jr is at Hogwarts, unable to apparate out. If Harry simply gets out of doing the blood of the enemy part then the potion fails and Voldemort's stuck as a spooky ghost still. That keeps him as a lower level of antagonist that allows school to continue mostly as normal.

I could see keeping a lot of other plot points or ditching them. Then there could still be a confrontation with Voldemort, in his own body or still borrowing one, in book 7, but maybe one that's more personal rather than a war.

I kinda like it, makes the tone shift far less severe.

>>25617041
>Really worthless thing to introduce time travel into your story over.
The primary payoff of the time travel gimmick is Harry thinking he and Sirius were saved by his father, when he was actually saved by his future self. Harry has to realize he's got to cast the patronus himself and then actually do it. That's why the time-turner exists. Everything else is just embellishment.
