Goal of the thread: Talk to a friend or loved one, or in a pinch, feel free to socialize with us. Talking to people is a human need, even to those of us who exhaust quickly from communication.
Daily goals can be repeated. Remember to keep score, it can only go up!

    >What is this thread for?
Getting better is hard, and sucks. A lot. It does not get easier doing it alone.
Share resources and experiences with combating depression, anxiety, personal issues, achieving or maintaining a healthy weight, etc.
    >Why is this thread /lgbt/?
Struggles with mental and physical health are an indisputable part of /lgbt/ life, be it from dysphoria, social pressure, heartbreak, or just unfortunate lifestyle choices.
    >Notes to consider:
Please be civil. Shame is your greatest enemy in fighting urges of self abuse (be it sh, drugs, or just self deprecation). Relapsing into bad and unhealthy habits is to be expected, the goal is to increase the average amount of time it takes between relapses. Any improvement is a victory no matter how small. Your worth and right to get better are non-negotiable. And most importantly:
WE ARE NOT THERAPISTS, WE DON'T REPLACE MEDICATION
    >Note on advice
Generic advice won't necessarily help you in particular, but for those it does it is an essential foundation to build future progress on, not a miracle cure. Do not underestimate the effects subtle changes to your lifestyle can have. Try first, keep us posted on your progress, build from there.

We are *always* short on self help resources, so if anything was useful to you, let us know!
NOTE: This general is slow moving, so sometimes people reply to you cross-thread! Be on the lookout.

Apart from the GOTT, here are a few things you can do _today_ to make your life a little better. Keep a diary and write down every success. Some you may do as often as you please, but write down each one individually! You deserve it! Do not feel pressured to do all, but feel free to select one or two!

    - prepare 1 load of laundry
    - do 1 load of laundry
    - read one page of a book or manga you have been putting off
    - cook yourself a meal, or try learn to make a simple dish
    - eat a meal
    - pick up items on the floor for 5 minutes
    - make your bed
    - if you have a bad habit, try making it more inconvenient (putting things in hard to reach places for example)
    - do the dishes for 3 minutes
    - write down one thing you are grateful for (from abstract things to something like a cute image you saw)
    - Clean up 1m^2 of your floor (~40x40 in)
    - Open your window for 10-20 minutes
    - try to exercise for 5 min (walk outdoors, walking stairs, whatever you wish)
    - take out the trash
    - drink a glass of water
    - put one item of trash in the bin
    - reach out to an online contact
(perhaps even try arrange spontaneously meeting up with an IRL contact near you!)
    - BONUS: Repeat a goal to hit a milestone (1 book chapter rather than a page, the laundry pile, the floor of one room, etc)

I'm at kind of a weird point right now. I've basically just been sitting on my ass since the beginning of the year, 2 years if we don't count correspondence studies, and I don't really see things changing. I mean I don't mind. I'm really getting into video games for the first time in my life and I'm writing a book, reading books, stuff like that. I think I'm going to be 29 soon. I've moved out twice and crashed back both times. I tried the careerslop but it was unfulfilling and made me miserable. Money is going to run out eventually but right now it's not an issue because officially I'm taking care of family members and they pay me for that with money to get from the government. So technically /sig/anon is paying for this. Thanks /sig/anon, you're the best!
I'm applying for disability too while I'm at it. I don't think I'll get money from that though so whatever. My parents don't mind too much either because I take care of the dog while they are away for weeks at a time.
So that's, like, the most optimistic way of looking at it. I'm probably going to be that guy who still lives with his parents when he's 40, never had a partner, has no friends and works at a gas station or something? I'm just not really sure how to feel about that, but all the alternatives seem worse. My psychiatrist and therapist keep telling me that I should be grateful for what I have and I'm trying but it feels my life is, uhm, over? I don't know. Maybe I should cross that bridge when I get to it. /bloggu

Which is ludicrous, having a T540p myself. They used to be the go-to for affordable, sturdy, repairable machines. The current hardware situation in general is an utter clown show.

Alright bun, I finally got around to ask (regarding >>45026369).
The thing with cybersec in particular is that it tends to be a typical pick because it's a safe choice. The catch with that is that a LOT of people have that exact same idea. The thing that you need to focus on if you want to go in that direction is to first get a solid ground to stand on, that is, you need to study enough to have an idea what kind of cybersec you even want to get into (e.g. embedded systems, network stuff). In other words no project could prepare you for that specifically at your current stage.

well, i go make frankenpad now, much cheaper. parts on the way. i have had the metal laptops, now it will be plastic. that is scary, i tend to drop things. hopefully, i will not mess it up. never done this kind before, plastic clips, lcd replacement, etc

went camping again, different class, different community college, super rich one, not camping-specific class. it was a shitshow. the rich kids, its true they're spoiled and immature. group tents were provided for entire class, boys/girls/remainder tents, but they kicked me out, because i am not part of their clique, but they would not dare say it straight to my face. so i said fine, and took all my stuff out of the tent and laid it under the stars, and then they came again to harass me with the TA, shining lights in my face, about how they were just confused, then dragged out the reserve directors wife to say the same thing.... "do you want to talk about it"
i am the one who got the fire started in front of near everyone, when the TA floundered, this is not my first time, clearly
spoiled retards, this is not an emotional matter, talk to those spoiled brats if you want, the low is 55F, go away. they are just overgrown children, it was impossible to have a conversation for it was all gossip, and they still point lights at people.... the only upside to that place is that they are very rich, and dump new linen shirts to the reuse clothes rack, so i did get a nice piece, and hopefully i will get more stuff.
prof chewed them out, but in the way that flies over the heads of children, in the subtle way so the lawnmower parents can't eat him,
    >>
then i got home, and my mom served pasta, and there is an additive in certain jarred pasta sauces that gives me diarrhea, and i tasted it and refused to eat the bowl, and she's the one who got mad that i tossed it. i did swallow a bite, so now i am sick with dread, and awake too late, because i am starving, afraid to eat anything.

well, at least i know where the problem lies now. i carpooled, and though the driver was supposed to take two others, they flaked, and we talked alone, and he had some maturity, life exp.

i miss bf and alcohol is good calories
but i cant have anything. i've had to move so much this semester, what an annoyance

    >That checks out
Yeah, there's nothing I can do there.
At the end of the day, he's gonna do what he wants to do.

All I can do is try to position things so that he doesn't hurt us too much in the process.
There's a reason I have the details of the local hotel service ready in case I need to leave his place in a hurry.
I should probably check in with them for the actual prices. Another thing to save up for just in case.

    >Hope you got plenty of rest since, bun
It's been up and down but I have made a conscious effort to be healthier in that way.

I can only ever get 6 hours of sleep before a work day though, so that's an issue to correct.

I have a major personal update with some good news. My dad has dementia and I’ve been helping my mom take care of him at home for the past couple of years. We weren’t sure if it was necessary to put my father in residential care. Now we know that it is. Recently my dad had to be taken to the hospital for an emergency, and in the aftermath the doctor told my mom that it’s no longer safe or realistic for my dad to be cared for at home by family.

My dad recently started losing his coordination and falling. It used to be that if I held out my hands, my dad would take them and I could help him get up. But now he’s so out of it that he can’t cooperate. A couple of nights ago, my dad fell and refused to be helped up. My mom called emergency services, and the paramedics had to pull him off the ground, with him fighting them the entire time. Even at the hospital a nurse is watching him at all times, just to make sure he doesn’t try to tear out his IV or wander off.

The hospital is going to fix my dad up, then move him into short-term residential care while we find a place for him to go for the foreseeable future.

So my days of caring for my dad at home are over. I’m glad I helped my mom with this. Hell, I’m glad to have been needed. But now I’m just as glad to be done. It helps to know that my dad is still around, he just needs to be in the care of professionals now.

These last couple of months, taking care of my dad took up a lot of my time and energy. That was okay, because I knew how important it was, and that it wouldn’t be forever. Now I’ve been given that time back, and I understand how valuable it is.

I'm going to a psych soon and hopefully getting my meds adjusted, 150mg buproprion isn't enough, apparently. I worried about adjusted them for a while because I was afraid I had some form of bipolar and just anti depressants would make me flip, but I don't think that is the case. Any 'high' states seem to be caused by external factors and are significantly shorter and less common than my low states. My gp was also very useful in my appointment and seemed very understanding of my plight, besides him asking repeatedly about 'my sex change' lmao

I struggle with these issues a lot these days, in addition to maladaptive daydreaming.

The best ways I know of are to make difficult/important tasks easier or very simple to do.

AND to internalize that doing what is needed will bring you more rest and peace in the future.

I've been really dysphoric lately, even though im actively trying to make it better. it just hurts that noone around recognises that im struggling with something real.

i feel so incredibly behind in life and i'm just so jealous of people who got the support to get to be 'normal'. who aren't scared all the time, who can do normal things. i dont know at this point if this stuff will get better

it's really not healthy to keep stewing on. i fear i've regressed. it's just not fair, none of it is fair at all.

im going to try again to stop isolating myself so much, which is the only familiar, comfortable way i have of dealing with stress

i wonder if i'll ever 'fix' my life or if it's possible for me to find my way back into who i was 'supposed' to be. or if this is all more like an invisible disability that i'll either never have the courage or resources to address, or that's too deep rooted to address

i should just focus on the progress i can make but idk it hurts that like... the way to progress is to lean on people more and work on my social life, but it feels like people are actively oblivious, judgmental or not understanding towards the situation i'm in and why i am the way i am

i think the internet and the amount of transphobia i see, even from normies and allies and other trans people, has been bad for me too. so im going to try getting off it completely.

socially i feel like a total fuckup but i have to work on it, there's no other way. i think i have to stop putting rules or standards in place and just throw myself at it any opportunities i get, as long as im not pushing myself into more danger or dysfunction or nervous overwhelm/burnout.

there's so much wrong but maybe if i work on it systematically i can be okay

Sometimes I feel like totally isolated from other transfems because I am a veteran and I transitioned after my service, in my mid 20s. Not from the transmascs. They understand me. They don't judge me. They don't look at me as a walking landmine. They understand that it was just about getting benefits, and getting away from family. Whenever I talk to transfems it's like they want every tgirl to be a walking activist machine that hates the system and wants to burn it down.

Or it's the same shit with my business. Like it's a fucking crime to be motivated by profit. No one else has to wake up and occupy my body and my brain but everyone thinks that I should do everything for everyone else. Well FUCK YOU!

I sometimes get feelings that my skintone makes it harder to be cute or even just average looking. These specific thought tend to arise whenever I'm doing skincare or styling my hair
I don't really know what to do but to try harder at making myself look good. Though considering just how much of a Hon I am, it's going to be a very long time till It stops bothering me.
So it's kinda more of a mix of being a Hon and skincolor self-hate ig. I know there isn't really a permanent solution till passing but I hope someone has advice.

I hate that you can't complain about your parents past a certain age. I'm pushing thirty and I still hate their guts and I hate living with them and I wish I could move out already but schizophrenia is a bitch and they're taking advantage of that.

If you’re self conscious about how your skin tone, keep in mind that pretty much all forms of racial resentment are cope. “I may be X, but at least I’m not Y!” People who criticize your appearance that way are soothing their own insecurities by finding somebody else to look down on. They’re trying to compensate for their own shortcomings by making a show of excluding somebody else. It’s a shitty thing to do, and it’s pretty arbitrary. You can be too dark skinned for some people, and too light skinned for others. You need to love yourself unconditionally, without comparing yourself to anyone else.

Now bear in mind I’m white, so my understanding of some of this is secondhand, but hopefully that helps.
    >>
    >>45161824
It’s hard to stop being upset with your parents if they’re still mistreating you. That kind of thing will tend to remind you of the past, but this isn’t just about the past.

It might help you to talk about this in terms of what you want to change about how your parents treat you now. Even if your parents are only doing what they’ve always done, they can’t change how they behaved in the past. It’s easier to deal with present and past behavior separately. Connecting the two seems like it would be persuasive, but it can also be a distraction. It can put people on the defensive, and feeling like there’s no point in trying to change now if they’ll also be judged for what they can’t change in the past.

Speaking as someone who lived with my parents for most of my adult life, and was figuring out how to live with them in the present while also processing the past.

Its ok to feel that way about your parents even if you are 30 and above. My parents became such different people after their parents died. they tell me, they didn't move far enough away. Growing up, there were so many fights and examples of passive aggressive manipulation in our family. People fighting over inheritances, petty awful shit. But once my grandparents died, my parents became so much happier, and they haven't been shy about telling me. They're 54, and I think they have the right to feel that way. So you do too.

Pursuing an interest in something is a good thing, and studying a belief system like that can be a comfort as well. I can imagine you’re a little embarrassed to be talking about this because of astrology’s reputation, but I’m pretty sure it’s possible to be into astrology in a chill, healthy way. The astrology followers who aren’t like that just stand out more. Godspeed anon, and always check your Gatorade for mercury!

    >I can imagine you’re a little embarrassed to be talking about this because of astrology’s reputation, but I’m pretty sure it’s possible to be into astrology in a chill, healthy way.
Absolutely! I'm not btw, the first lesson of that course required rejecting the Enlightenment and embracing the Medieval worldview as fact. It's fun tho!
My inner critic does kick me all the time... I was really into the whole skeptic/rationalism thing for the first 25 years of my life, and integrating that is just a little painful now. I also worry I might just be swinging too far into the other direction (having rejected the Enlightenment and such). I'm glad to have this thread as a litmus test tbqh

we have the inherent tendency to search for meaning in the world and ourselves in order to actually process the world around us. some need an explicit spiritual way of doing that, but we all are just going with whatever feels right. personally I like tarot card when I'm having a particularly hard time, they just help reframe and process things, and it essentially gives a "prompt" to use as a backing to figure out what to do next, rather than starting from nothing.

don't be prescriptive of others with it I think. It's fun and can help you make meaning of things happening, just try to keep a reasonably grounded perspective regarding how wildly varying people, their behaviors, and the consequences of them, can be. belief systems are just lenses for us to look through after all
    >>
Im sick in the fucking head.
    >>
    >>45178234
Rejecting the Enlightenment sounds like a red flag, but it seems to be a pretty basic tenet of seriously studying astrology. If you’re going to learn anything, you need to start from the assumption that it is true.

I can imagine rationalism/skepticism putting you off lately. I definitely thought better of Richard Dawkins in high school for example. I feel differently about him and his sort now, not just because of what they’ve been up to lately but because of hindsight. They’re not so much in favor of the opposite of what they’re against as they are focused on being against something.

It’s natural to want some kind of certainty about the big picture. Even being sure about nothing can be a kind of certainty, but a certainty of absence can start feeling empty. Sometimes you’ve got to push away everyone else’s beliefs to make room for finding your own.

Think of it as a different way of learning to get at a different kind of truth. Science is quite transparent about the limits of what it can reveal. Plenty of things that always were true existed outside the borders of scientific fact before we could prove them. Pre-modern civilizations and people figured out things we also recognize as true using the methods available to them — that didn’t make them wrong. And learning about old ways of understanding the world can help us appreciate how things are now, for better and worse.

Maybe you are overcorrecting, keep an eye on that. But the great thing about changing is that you can keep doing it. You can change a lot now and a little bit more later if you decide you need it.

    >i don't even feel joy even if i don't compare, so i don't know why shouldn't i compare my life with others.
I get why you say that, and it's a tricky situation to be in. But at the same time, misery in my experience follows Liebig's law of the minimum: If you have several problems that affect you to the same degree, you will only feel better when all three are taken care of, which means there is no reward until all 3 holes are plugged, if you will. It is a major problem I observe a lot, not just ITT. It is easy to consider any one leak not worth attending.
    >basically was considered a missing person
Oh shit, that is an unusual situation to be in, could it be your family holds a lot of power over your day to day life, something like that?
    >I don't have a blender sadly so i might just stick with clear soups for now.,
    >cream soups are very hearty though i kinda miss it. I might try getting one.
I strongly recommend it, a stick blender is 20 bucks new iirc.
    >Currently failing at both end.
At the beginning your focus will have to lie in creating growing breaks from the undesired behavior. So if you manage to evade the impulse one week a day more than you used to, and manage that consistently, then you made progress.
    > I am trying but i am getting no results out if it now.

    >I still think that I am a bad friend which cannot hold friendships.
    >i keep nipping people off when the budding of acquaintanceship starts to blossom, because I cannot bear the pain of the end
All of that sounds a lot like your problem is twofold, on the one hand you grapple a great deal with self image issues that manifest as you self sabotaging and second guessing stable relationships into oblivion, on the other hand it sounds like you might have attachment style problems. If there is a chance for you to seek out pro help on these fronts I would absolutely look into it. The fact that you held stable relationships over multiple years should encourage you, but it is clear you lack some grounding that keeps you from spiraling when you already have a good thing going.

It's no wonder you struggle to find the strength to go on. I know my reply is late, but I would like you to know that you are not alone in your struggles, not ITT, not on this board.
    >trying to be fine on my own after getting broken up n blocked randomly is much harder than I thought.
I fully understand, you NEED to take some time to grieve, Anon. I assume you have very few friends to lean on, and are quite alone with your thoughts? A lack of support network can really do one in in such cases, and letting yourself be vulnerable around other people is immensely scary after having faced reaction like this. Would you like to vent a little, perhaps? Let some feelings out? You say you don't have it in you to try and get out of the pit right now, yet you reached out to us. That is something. Maybe what you really think is that you don't have it in you to take a step that is big enough to matter, in which case, I would love to try and break whatever unattainable seeming goals you have down with you.

Ahh, that's unfortunate. I suppose you can always be on the lookout for alternative jobs but that too is work and would drain you on top. It's no surprise the onboarding sapped energy out of your studying, that is perfectly normal and the main reason a lot of students I know that had to work took longer to finish their degrees. Given the added time pressure you mentioned I don't wanna frighten you though, I am just saying that it is normal that your performance took a bit of a dip there, you will bounce back soon enough.

You basically have a foundation now but it's not really like you have a home just yet. However, indifference is something that is often a transitional state to be in, it is much less emotionally exhausting than being invested but at the same time it is not at all recharging or motivating. However it can take a lot of effort to even get there and I hope it doesn't sound backhanded when I congratulate you for it. I mean it sincerely.

I would love to see where your journey takes you from there. From my own experience, at least, I often had to work towards goals I was too numb in the moment to believe in. I get that you're not looking for someone like that. I think it would be wise to let him know that if he wants you he can't *stay* DL. I mean there is nuance, I think professional contacts have no right to know jack shit about one's personal life for example, but the implication of DL extends to family and friends too and that is a no-go.
    >I need to look at those high school yearbooks
That is an excellent idea, people love to reconnect.
    >The issue with my neighbor is that when I think about him it feels like there are daggers in my heart when I even think about him.
There is a high chance those feelings will pass when you have some romantic experience, I think. He was your first real experience with someone being openly attracted to you, right?
    >I’ve been thinking that maybe I should talk to him and have sex with him
I get where you are coming from but I think your initial reaction of staying the hell away is wise.

    >I want to complain but y'all definitely have it worse than I do.
That does not matter here, I promise. A lot of situations like yours can be what I tend to call brain chemistry bullshit. If you truly have it "easy" then it is not a matter of "you shouldn't complain" but "we gotta find out the things that make you miserable in spite of that"! Do you bedrot a lot, for example? What is your environment like? What do you do?

Alright, this is it for now. Expect another few /sig/anon power hours to catch up with the thread, and please always make sure to ping me should I somehow lost track of a post. Have a lovely night, everyone. I feel very emotional right now and.. I really want to hammer home how happy I am to help in what little ways I can. I mean it. Please never hesitate to criticize or correct me. I do this out of love.

    >I've started journaling again. Still bedrotting most days though
It's a start, and it matters. And I want you to know that I am cheering you on for it.

    >fuck it, I am going to be healthier from now on
Nice, do you have concrete goals in mind?

What kinda jobs are you gonna apply for?

    Welcome back, Anon.
    >unfortunately I still am a p*rn addicted freak, though I don't do it as often
    >I've been doing marginally better
It's a start, and I am glad you made progress. How are other aspects of your life treating you?

    >So technically /sig/anon is paying for this. Thanks /sig/anon, you're the best!
1000% where I want my tax money to go and I am not joking, I'd rather pay more taxes than have people in your shoes excluded. I don't think it is healthy for 100% of the population to be employed full time. I am not keen on the idea of 100% of the population working half time, either. Not everyone can or should need to be employed to "earn" the right to live.
    Given what you wrote in
    >45167767 (can't link because spam filter fuckery)
I would say your psychiatrist and therapist are a bit too detached from modern reality. Like, I agree that you can use more people in your life, it would do you incredibly well, but their way of suggesting it is almost childishly naive and stuck in a world view where your entire social circle met at the Sunday mess every week. Tell me about your phobias, I would prefer to take them into account when trying to help you on the front of making friends.

    >If it was several years ago I think I know who you are.
I'd be surprised if you didn't, I was always surprised by how well you could recognize some of us. I've come back a few times here and there, but only ever lurked because of the ISP bans and captcha errors, I appreciate the warm welcome <3

    >That already is a victory, and I am delighted to hear that!
I wanted to discount this at first but took long enough that I think you're right. even falling a few steps back doesn't mean none were taken forward. thank you

    >while I have been a bit low energy recently I hope to all things precious my words still reach you.
I'm liable to stick around at this point I think. that's my hope, anyways. I hope whatever funk has got you down lifts soon, I know that the season around an anniversary like that tends to feel fairly grey as a whole for me, so I'm glad you've been taking time for yourself.

I'll be around, though. thanks again.
    and happy halloween :)
