muzzle velocity of approximately 3,450 to 3,550+ FPS out of a 20 inch Barrel.Wtf does the Army have against the m16 throwing out this kind of heat?
>>65624206>3,450 to 3,550+ FPS out of a 20 inch BarrelYeah nah ima need some sauce on that. Production date and lot number alongside the velocity test.
>>65624206Are you extrapolating incorrectly? M855A1 is tuned to hit max MV out of a 14.5" barrel, there are diminishing returns after that.
>>65624324The latest batches I've seen with a chrono stuck to them don't even appreciably go above M855 levels out of a 14.5 Right at 2950fps or so. Not 3100. Where M855A1 succeeds is being a good performer at low impact velocities.
>>65624206Im a big fan of bismuth, personally. Tin i dont care about but dont dislike, always figured antimony was better for hardness in lead/bismuth. I didnt know the m855a1 was bismuth
OP may be getting confused between M855A1 and the higher pressure M855A1+
>>65624392Early production had tin/bismuth cores. They switched to copper pretty quick. Supposedly something about bismuth cores not having enough mass to stabilize reliably in arctic tests.
War would be much cooler if everyone were using automatic .22s
>>65624421>bismuth not having enough mass>switches to copperHuh?
>>65624421Bismuth is denser than copper
>>65624497Not by much, but more dense still. Tin is pretty un-dense though, but tin is usually only like 1-2% of a given bullet alloy anyway, hardly enough to drag the mass down so much
