Is it historically accurate for an American research outpost in Antarctica in the early 1980s to be packing this much firepower?

You know that the name "Antarctica" basically means "Anti-bear land" or "opposite of bears" in ancient Greek, right?

Funnily enough that was based on pure guesswork and philosophy by the Greeks, but they turned out to be correct.

"There can't possibly be another bear like constellation to the South of us!"
    They were right!
    >>
    >>65623760
Cold War was still going on, hunting seals and maybe even penguins

The flamethrower is clearly for dealing with ice

Recreation purposes, you're out in the middle of nowhere, and sometimes you need to blow off some steam, and besides, there's not like anything else to do to pass the time in the South Pole

And I guess the final point is that they are pretty much isolated and alone; if someone gets cabin fever and goes insane and tries to do something stupid, how else will you stop them and keep them in line?
    >>
    >>65623809
I didn't realize penguins had teeth inside their beaks like that. Thought that kind of dental work was more of a snake thing.
    >>
    >>65623998
they're soft keratin spikes called papillae; it would be kinda weird to have teeth on their tongue
it's not very visible in that photo but they're angled inwards to help prevent fish and other prey from escaping
    >>
    >>65623760
What would be the ideal loadout to deal with the Thing? Loads of close quarter combat situation, as the case at outpost 31 or the Norwegian station.
Gunfire isn’t very effective against the Thing. Flamethrower or possibly concentrated acid might do the job, but you might risk burning everything down. Letting it get a hold of you for a brief moment is also fatal, since the microorganism infect the cell pretty fast
    >>
You forgot the whole rack of shotguns, the dynamite, the second flamethrower, and the crate of grenades. But the crate of grenades and the hk93 in the upper left were the norwegians', not the americans'.
The flamethrowers and dynamite were surely meant more for managing ice and snow rather than purpose built weapons, and one of the flamers was malfunctioning, so the other may have been a replacement, rather than them ever specifically planning to have multiple operational.

    >>65623994
The glass cabinet with all the shotguns and their shells in one place would be a pretty stupid defense against a stir crazy guy with the initiative.
    >>
    >>65623760
Explain why everyone everywhere that isnt brown should not have an excess of guns and ammo
    >>
The HK33 belonged to the Norwegians, not the burgers. In such an isolated place, it's probably handy to have a few guns in case people go insane or whatever, this way people die quicker and don't suffer so much, regardless of whoever gets to the armoury first.
    >>
    >>65623760
    >that much firepower
the hk33 or whatever was a stand in for a G3. the norwegens would have been using G3s at the time (I think they still are) so I could see them having a G3 for something.
The American base had one single service revolver for the main cop guy incase someone went batshit.
no idea why they had the short shotgun. maybe to shoot the dogs? maybe the g3 and shotgun were in case someone went insane or to shoot like seals and penguains or something
the flame thrower was to deice shit
apparently there is a shotgun in mcmurdo in case someone acts retarded or if they have to shoot a walrus or something

I figured fish capture was the purpose once I saw them, just never intuited they might need something like that. Also didn't realize they're not teeth, per se. You say it'd be weird to have teeth on the tongue, but then lampreys exist.

    >You know that the name "Antarctica" basically means "Anti-bear land" or "opposite of bears" in ancient Greek, right?
I did not but you have the context wrong. It's "opposite of the bear constellation"

    • Arctic comes from the ancient Greek word arktos, meaning "bear"—specifically referring to the northern constellations Ursa Major (the Great Bear) and Ursa Minor (the Little Bear), which point toward true north in the night sky.
    • Antarctic combines the prefix anti- (meaning "opposite" or "against") with arktikos ("of the bear").

Why don't we establish a colony of polar bears in Antarctica?
    >>
    >>65623760
Depends who funded it and who has to man it. You know some Texan is going to be "no way I go out there without combat shotguns and flamethrowers, I don't care about no penguins or seals-- I'm worried about those Chinese, Russians, or worse--and we don't have no women so it's our butts they going to be rapin'"

    >and one of the flamers was malfunctioning, so the other may have been a replacement, rather than them ever specifically planning to have multiple operational.
they were basically stranded out there, I could see them having 2 flame throwers so one would be redundant if one of them broke rather than leaving them with zero flame throwers
    >the shotgun cabinate
apparently McMurdo has 1 singular shotgun under lock and key

The spectacled bears are a remnant of the short faced bears that used to dominate North America. When the Panama isthmus formed they made their way to South America but after the Bering strait opened they got displaced by Eurasian bears of the Ursus genus and hunted by humans.
